I began working for SIH as a FT employee, then moved to PRN after I took a position with another hospital system. I worked in Outreach Lab, Carbondale Hospital, and then Herrin Hospital. My first manager in Outreach was absolutely horrible. She played favoritism with the staff members, which caused tension among the staff. This manager was not someone you could trust, as she would stab people in the back constantly. She was also a salaried employee who came to work late and left early every day. Ultimately she was at some point ordered to take a drug test and failed it for taking unprescribed drugs, which lead to her being fired. I transferred to Carbondale within that timeline and worked on the night shift. I feel that my supervisor did an okay job, but didn’t handle employee concerns or really listen to employees. I was still happy with the job, because I worked overnight and didn’t have to interact with many of upper level management staff. I transferred over to Herrin Hospital at some point also. Eventually I took another FT job outside of SIH, but stayed on as PRN. I enjoyed the slower pace of work at Herrin since it is a smaller hospital, but my supervisor there was not the greatest. She played favoritism with staff and was very two-faced with employees. This created a hostile environment which made staff not get along, and she would not do anything about the issues when you brought it to her attention. Luckily I worked on the night shift PRN, so didn’t have to deal with all the conflict between employees.  

SIH was the best job I’ve ever had in my long career, that is before our previous Rank manager retired. He was just that rare people person type of man with the mindset of RESPECT and treatment is equal for ALL staff and he seemed to be a more frequent visitor to the facilities !!   We are on our 2nd computer system after switching electronic medical records. We had a very short orientation from computer specialist to teach us the “basics”. Our IV pump wouldn’t connect to computer and so we skipped that part. I wish now that I was made aware of the upmost importance that feature was going to be!!  Epic has endless features of what it can do most are very good but we just DON’T get enough training on the new features as they’re added. Our old Hospital  nursing, lab, ER, House Supervisor’s etc were a work family relationship. 
The longtimers are leaving after many many years of working that all due to the changes being made that affects all of our duties.  I love my patients, they are  the reason I’m a nurse but I feel like I’m unable to give the proper amount of time to them and also complete all my computer work.  We are assigned an enormous amount of online mandatory education they we have to get completed in our spare time. We have lost a lot of our staff due to management changes and more are leaving all the time.  So So Sad to see how much this corporation has changed and not for the better!

Different departments have different cultures. It really depends what you do within healthcare and where you end up working within the company; I've had both great management and not so great management within my time at this company. Senior leadership's handling of the COVID pandemic has proven continually to be more miss than hit. Believe it or not, at the beginning of the pandemic members of my current department were told they couldn't wear masks. Our managers enforced this where as nursing staff questioned administration in support of us. Luckily this stance has since changed, but that situation (along with many others) left a lasting impression on me. For the Southern IL area I maintain that this is one of the better companies to work for, but at large this company is average with mediocre benefits in regards to the general employee's overall compensation. Some positions (notably security and patient care tech positions) are severely underpaid given the situations they're put in or workload that's required of them. Adequate staffing is a frequent issue in most departments as is bed management when it comes to providing longer term care for patients. It could be summed up accurately to say that employment here is the best of a bad situation when one finds themselves looking for a steady income in the Southern IL region. 

I feel like this place has some good qualities and some other not so good. Some staff members are very kind and welcoming. As a nurse , there are some PCTs /techs/CNA’s who are very efficient and helpful and there are others who don’t do anything but the bare minimum … if that. Some will wander away off the unit for hours at a time without batting an eye or any repercussions. They have LPNs here who are often utilized as PCTs, some are great, others I think are just burnt out and unwilling to help with anything. It’s pretty laid back with most things here. People come and go off the unit all the time, for any length of time.  I was really surprised how most people completely go out of their way to avoid eye contact or any form of acknowledgment which is so weird to me. People don’t introduce themselves. It was a bit of a culture shock for me. If you are a hard worker, there is a potential to feel a little overwhelmed here. You essentially are on your own and do a lot of primary nursing depending on who your PCT/tech/CNA is. Your charge RN’s/Supervisors , a majority are merely administrative, they won’t help with patient care, admissions, etc. some are very lazy and loud, also a bit of a culture shock for me. Management- never met in person at all. Never introduced themselves. Odd.  The most enjoyable part of the job were some of the sweetest patients I met. I’m thankful for the experience either way. It’s taught me a lot about myself. 

I worked front desk and checked in customers to see the their doctor. We didn't call them patients there, patients are call customers in that office. I had 12 doctors at one time to keep in order. And get the customer to the right doctor. Plus take the proper insurance, if they did not have insurance then I had to do a sliding fee form and that made their payments smaller. We only took cash, so I had to do cash handling procedures. I had to keep the customers information current and up to date at all times. I had mastered three different computer programs for that particular company. I learned how to be patient. On top of all the customers I saw in the day I also had tons of phone calls coming in at the same time. The customers were not always patient, so I needed to be. I also learned multi-tasking. My co-workers were very nice and pleasant to work with. Whenever I needed help with something they were always there to help me. The hardest part of my job was learning everything there was to learn. So many legal procedures and policies. The most enjoyable part of my job was that I got to work in the field that I love. I was around doctors and nurses all the time and made some long lasting friendships. My manager was awesome. She was very kind and forgiving. She helped me through a lot of the learning processes.

Working with sih I have realized they do not care about you. More specifically they do not care to help you succeed. If you are struggling in life, they do not care enough to try to help you. For example when I was pregnant I physically could not work, I was given the option to either quit with hopes of getting rehired or get fired. At the end of it they left a pregnant woman with nothing. They don’t care if you have personal issues that make it to where you can’t attend work. They simply do not care. Not to mention to overwhelming work environment when you are understaffed. They have two techs with four nurses on night shift, that is not enough. No matter how much you bring it to anybodys attention they will not increase the number of tech on night shift. With two techs on night you are expected to do what 3-4 techs do during the day. Which leaves you with a lot of back track charting or missed charting and worse you don’t efficiently get to take care of your patients. 

This internship was required for my graduation. A typical day would consist of me coming in at 8am and working along side of compliance officers until about 2pm. I would attend mandatory meetings that discussed the nature and status of the facility as well as being put in charge of creating different risk assessments survey's that dealt with compliance that would be sent to different departments to be completed.

My co-workers were mostly females, and management was through human resources as well as being assisted by the University.

The hardest part about this internship was dealing with mostly women all the time and me being the only male in that department of the office. The most enjoyable part of the internship was me learning so much about compliance and healthcare as well as tending mandatory meetings that were held in regards to important issues within the facility.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working for Southern Illinois Healthcare was walking out the door.  They used to be a decent company, but now, they are all about numbers, and no longer care about their employees.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part about working for SIH, is that they are short-staffed, and they place enormous volume expectations on the few employees they've got left, making for a very unsafe work environment.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment at SIH is stressed beyond capacity, and the culture is one that you can always be replaced.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day would be to scan as many patients as possible, with as little help as possible, and little training as possible, with as little complaint as possible.  Rinse and repeat.

My typical day starts by printing dictation for the psychiatrists and checking voice mail. Next I work on the billing encounters from the previous day and balance money from co-payments. All while answering the phone, scheduling and checking in patients. Make copies and file away the signed dictation into the charts. Depending on the day of the week, I work on medical records requests. I have learned a great deal from this position the most important is patience. The manager at the health center I work at has only been there for 9 months and is still getting used to working in a bigger center. The hardest part of my job is when I have to cancel a patient's appointment due to scheduling conflicts. The most enjoyable part of my job is the interaction with the patients.

Typical day would be to come in pull charts for the day, fill charts from the previous day, copy and send off charts, correct any issues with billing, billing and coding, answering phones, schedule appointments and confirm appointments, make copies of medical cards and insurance cards, greet customers. My co-workers were very helpful some more than others, but everyone was a team player and was very helpful if I needed to know something. The hardest part of the job was leaving it because I really did like what I was doing in an office setting. The most enjoyable part of the job is that the co-workers wasn't up tight and mean and they made the day go by faster.
