Always understaffed. On my first day after training, they had me on a floor with only one other CNA. Instead of having the usual 10 patients, I had 20 and they still expected me to complete showers and feed my feeders. The other floors had 4 CNA but they don’t get moved around because favoritism is huge here. 

No bonus for picking up shifts and no shift differential for PM shift. Forget about putting  in time off request, they will not approve it.
Most of the CNA are great but the nurses can be very “cliquey”. Some of them, especially Amor, will also hold a grudge against you if one of your patients fall. It’s extra paperwork for them to do even though falls happen all the time and it’s part of their job! Some can also be lazy and want you to pass out medication to patients that they don’t want to deal with. Call lights are constantly going off and most of the nurse will not help even though they will be at the station on their phones.

The pay is also low and not worth it for all the work you deal with. The only good thing is that there is always opportunities to do OT if you need the extra money. Other than that, I recommend looking somewhere else that will pay you more than minimum wage or go into agency.

They advertise an 8hr shift, but in reality it's only a 6 hour paid shift. You will be severely overworked, only 2 caregivers and 1 medtech per shift, and from what I heard only 1 caregiver and 1 medtech for the night shift. I couldnt be bothered taking the training for the night shift, because I already know I do not want to work here. The residents here are mostly bedridden and incontinent, so you have to clean, change and turn them at least twice in your shift, and you will have to do it by yourself. The kitchen is also understaffed, so you will also be tasked to give out waters and then drinks and desserts one by one to the residents. You  will also need to keep taking out the trash outside instead of the housekeeping doing this. And of course the laundry of the residents plus all the linens and towels that the facility uses. It's too much work for the caregivers. I have been a sitter in different assisted living facilities and this is the first time I've seen caregivers also doing the housekeeping and kitchen department's job. You will only like this job if you want to be physical for 6 hours straight.

i worked in this company for 8 yrs and southland became part of my daily dose of my happiness yes it is sometimes stressful specially when i have difficult patient but at the end of the day being able to help and assist my residents makes me feel accomplished and happy. i love working with people who helped me grow as an individual and helped me grow my skills as an lvn. every staff worked as a team from being to the lowest and to the highest position everyone treated every individual equally. i love working people who have passion to their job and care about their patients and thats how i felt when i worked at southland and this is the reason why i enjoyed the last 8 years that i worked in this company... and if i were given a chance to work at southland again i would gladly do soo.

Whether you are looking for just a place to work or begin a career Southland provides flexibility and opportunity to anyone that is willing to put in the effort. There is always work to be done and plenty of hours available for those who are looking for it. Management does a great job of encouraging staff to continue their education and give you opportunity to move up in the company. Southland is part of a large company that has facilities in multiple states meaning there is always new openings and opportunities for staff.

I love working here. People are great! I actually miss my co workers. They are always short staff and sometimes over staff. I enjoy the lunch break at 11-7 shift. Colleagues help me during my most difficult shift. We help each other in the most busiest times. Patients are sweet and nice. There’s always food for lunch. There’s a lot of chartings to do too. Over all, this place is alright. 

STAY AWAY
Very understaffed, management sucks and the caregivers are underpaid!!! This job is not only draining physically but mentally as well. The management is not great. There is a lot of drama within the workplace and it is just an overall toxic environment. Also, you are only offered three training days then you are expected to be able to do everything by yourself. Do not apply here, they do not care about their workers!!! 

Favoritism, a lot of the philipinos get away with lots of stuff they shouldn't be doing.  The pay is no good and that's why a lot of good workers leave. They have you fill 2 or 3 people's positions for one no good salary. At the end when the company starts to do good the head people go to trips spending  money (company bonus i guess)  and the hard workers the back bone of the company get peanuts

Good place to work overall, however if your plan is to grow and advance your career then you are in the wrong place. Only one person here decides who gets to advance their career and usually it's someone in her own race. Nursing side, I think its the same as any other nursing home, ratio 40:1. 

Patients are pleasant. While the nursing staff is very “click-y”. And that makes it hard to succeed. They’re severely understaffed. And other nurses don’t care about the patients so call lights are always going off and for waaaaay too long before they’re attended to

I would love more money than what I receive, but it is what it is. I love my job, and that is truly all that matters to me. Amazing coworkers and residents, awesome management. I've worked for other companies that work with people, and this place ACTUALLY seems to care about staff and residents alike. I plan to be here as long as possible.
