As a 55+ year old employee who was a returnee to the workplace, I did not feel that the management in our group articulated an expectation of respect from younger workers to older workers. I can't say this is totally the fault of management failure, as I think it is a common situation across most workplaces and organizations to undervalue older workers. I had retired from a successful professional career and was pretty tech-savvy, but frequently was disparaged by much younger co-workers for my supposed inability to remember certain processes or my overall speed. I remained a part-time on-call employee by choice, but this choice meant I didn't work consistently and have the opportunity to build my confidence and speed with certain complex situations. There seemed to be little appreciation from my peers for coming in to help out when they were short-staffed, although I tried to learn work-arounds and be supportive of them. Instead I was often snapped at or subject to a disrespectful eyeroll (or similar) when I asked for help, or said I was unsure how to proceed. I think the organization could benefit from education on how to value and be respectful to co-workers from all backgrounds and generations, as would the opportunity for more flexible hours: SCHS could possibly fill more of its many openings if they were willing to work with more part-time, flex, and job share options that would work for retirees, moms, and students, and more driven to achieve and maintain a respectful and appreciative workplace.

Outstanding people work here!! As a caregiver, I feel St. Charles is often unfairly portrayed in the media. St. Charles, despite financial challenges is still trying to find ways to grow, develop and retain staff. I work closely with people in leadership and HR, and the public would be humbled to know how much time, energy and care goes into making decisions. Often times, I hear caregivers express frustration over what they feel is the obvious choice for management to make, yet I've seen and heard ALL of the thought and care that went into making that decision. I wish people would be a bit more empathetic to the fact that St. Charles leadership works really hard to make the best decisions for the system. No one is "trying" to do a bad job, it's a very complicated and challenging position to be in. 

As the saying goes, "Attitude reflects leadership". The morale during my 4 years with St. Charles was in steady decline. This is due to some of the most incompetent leadership above the Manager level I've ever seen. Regular system wide evaluations were conducted showing the overall dissatisfaction with the company. Despite that, due to upper management's belief that they knew best, nothing changed. In fact, the more that they dug in with their practices and policies the worse the overall attitude among the caregivers got. And if you mentioned the name of a superior and example of a specific issue while voicing your dissatisfaction, chances were that there would be a targeted response coming back at you. Secret practices like appointing people for promotion while asking others to apply to make it look like policy was being followed was rampant. Favoritism, sexism (unfair pay practices), cover ups and sweeping under the rug were the norm. When a group of friends from Directors on up to the CEO all arrive in unison from one institution to run a new institution, this is the likely result. The Board took a swing in 2014, and couldn't have had a bigger miss.

During my time in the population health department, I was exposed to horrid management with no accountability or oversight to their work.  I would say that I felt discriminated against by my manager (this was noted by my peers too) and when I brought this up, I was clearly retaliated against with no support from the HR representative for that department.  I know other individuals at St. Charles had issues with management across the organization and it's pretty sad because it is difficult (job depending) to find other employment in Bend, I personally had to relocate for work.  

Now there are some great people at this organization that truly show what I think St. Charles could be.  However, the culture is abhorrent with unethical choices and when you try to bring up their "ACTS" it is twisted around that you are the one that is not following these expectations and everyone else is.  My on suggestion if you take a job at St. Charles, understand who you can trust and cannot trust and expect to have to deal with incompetent leadership across the organization.

They had a glint survey and they have yet to reveal the results. I know that HR got a bad review because they continue to tel us that they aren’t just their for management, but when you enter into a meeting with them they don’t want to hear your side of things. 
St. Charles and the HR department are bullies. I have many friends who have been targeted by their managers because  they stand up for themselves. If you want rights as an employee, do not work for St. Charles. Do not confide in your managers because they will use it against you. 
I have never felt so insecure at work. 
I have had several times where patients have sexually harassed me and they do next to nothing about. 
St. Charles came out with $53,000,000 in 2019, after paying their employees and yet, they continue to take money away from the employee. Be careful.

A few months ago our manager flat out told us that he will never bring his kids to this hospital because of how disgusting it is. That pretty much sums it up right there. 

This is a company that will gladly shell out money for a hilariously misleading ad campaign and a beautiful new ICU tower, but then claim they are unable to pay their employees more than slightly above minimum wage because they don't have the money. Meanwhile, people quit left and right and departments are notoriously understaffed, which only leads to decreases in overall patient care. The only thing that saves this hospital are the employees who bend over backwards every day to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding region that this hospital simply cannot support, giant new ICU tower or not. It is becoming increasingly clear that St. Charles will continue to struggle for years to come unless the administration somehow reaches the profound conclusion that maybe they should pay their employees better. I wouldn't hold your breath.

I have worked in hospital ORs for over 30 years. St. Charles is by far the worst place I have worked.The supervisors are completely worthless. Management is completely out of touch with what is actually happening in the department. If you have a better way of doing something forget it they will NOT try it. The OR is 15-20 years behind the times. The staff is VERY clickish, so don't make waves and follow THEIR rules no matter how unsafe or out of date they are. Nepotism is rampant. If your charge nurse doesn't like you you get the worst assignments and no breaks or relief. No matter how often you report this to the supervisors nothing is done about it.
St. Charles just cut wages for the entire hospital for the next 6 months and increased insurance premiums. No COL increase or merit increases next year. They also put a blackout on ETO for about four months to roll out EPIC. No one can take ETO during this period. 
I would encourage you to look elsewhere if you are looking for work.

I guess the fact that I have been at St Charles over 30 years tells some of the story.
I enjoy my work, feel generally appreciated, and feel that we are empowered and encouraged by our leaders to be the best we can be every day.  Any organization this size or larger will have a percentage of people who feel they aren't treated or compensated as they should be, but I tend to disagree with that notion here.  I enjoy my interactions with staff in other areas, enjoy the challenges that come along each day, and appreciate the support I feel from my leaders in doing what is right and accomplishing good things.

St. Charles is a monopoly and that unfortunately allows them to be very slow to change or take into consideration  the needs/wants of their employees.  Being a very desirable location means there will always be new people coming in so no need to cater to the existing employees.  The upper management is what you would expect - out of touch with bedside nursing and entirely focused on profits.  That being said, lower management and my peers are great and my compensation package is adequate/competitive.  If you want to switch departments or cross train...forget about it.  Not happening.  They do not promote internal advancement, training, etc.
