Having recently worked for this organization for the past 7 years.... here are my thoughts....

The majority of the leadership/administration are locals with ZERO real life experience. Received their positions solely based on the fact of 1) being from Star Valley; 2) lots of fluff speech; 3) a pulse.

Take for instance the VP of IT and the VP of Outpatient Services. Neither have any healthcare related education, and most importantly, neither have any real world experience in healthcare and yet they are in administrative roles - making clinical decisions for which they have no understanding/clue. Over recent years they and many of the administrators have made some very poor choices with classic knee jerk reactions. This includes over hiring, hiring incompetent staff, and making continued promises and commitments to the community without funding in place.

Everyone in administration, minus the CEO, has the title of Vice President. Need to ensure we all receive a trophy right? It would appear that the latest CEO has good intentions and some real life experiences - however, he is surrounded by several incompetent "leaders" who say what they need to at any given moment to make themselves appear competent.

Overall staff at the facility are generally kind and caring. However, if you are an "outsider" you will find difficulty in finding acceptance or meaningful relationships.

In regards to compensation... don't expect to be paid similar to what you would find in a larger region. They base their pay upon other surrounding critical access hospitals - which historically don't pay as much - which is to be expected. However, the nearest competitor is in Jackson, WY. Their benefits and pay are astronomically superior to that of Star Valley Health. There is good reason why so many individuals from the Star Valley area commute there every day. Administration acknowledges that Jackson pays significantly better and provides excellent benefits but do little to nothing to prevent hospital staff from leaving to take employment there.

Long and short of it....if you are okay with generally inferior pay/benefits, mediocre leadership at best, generally poor acceptance by the community/staff, and being limited to one potential place of employment (if you are wanting to stay in healthcare), then you may enjoy Star Valley and its hospital.

SVH is a great place to work overall. I truly believe most of the management and administration try hard to improve the patient experience and employee morale. A lot of the staff have never worked elsewhere, or have forgotten what it is like in the “real world” and bring down the culture with their negativity. I feel like some are given an inch and then ask for a mile and nothing is ever good enough. For example, we get a Christmas bonus or a raise and some will complain, even during Covid. Some managers of the ancillary staff need additional training outside Star Valley to see how they can improve in their areas, but they mean well. 

Was a learning and community focused position, in this position as a PRN you learn more than just housekeeping skills, it helps improve communication and organization skills, you work with the people around you to solve problems and make them more ideal for everyone within that environment. This company gives you lots of opportunities and resources. Working for SVMC gives you advancement opportunities in multiple fields and are really reliable and respectful with your concerns and opinions, the director within EVS is really good with working through issues and questions one on one with you, or as a whole department.

I've worked here as a Registered Nurse for many years. The experienced I have gained has been immense. This company values education and trains every nurse in ACLS, PALS and NRP and also encourages TNCC along with other educational opportunities. It also is a good place to gain diversity in your experience such as L&D, ER, Peds, newborn along with your general med/surg. 
The only thing that I would improve is part-time benefits/PTO. Full time PTO and sick leave is great though. 
Compared to the rest of the world our insurance is competitive, but it is still quite expensive with a high deductible.

SVMC is a critical access hospital that has some amazing providers.
I have learned much about joint surgeries, medications, pain control, team work and patient safety.  

I currently am part of a very unique Labor and Delivery RN program.  I am often responsible for NST's, C-sections scheduling, natural labor, inductions, and augmentation of labors as well as post partum care and Newborn care.  We provide Discharge education, nursing information, and prenatal classes. The hardest part of my job is working with providers that I don't necessarily fill are doing what is best for the pt. and are unwilling to communicate with RN's in a way that would be productive for all concerned.

The benefits are AMAZING! What other company starts you out (fulltime) offering 4 weeks PTO and 1 week sick leave? The people are great, I know I could walk into any administrators office or the CEO's with a concern and be taken seriously and respectfully. The amount of time off I get enables me to live the fun active life I want outside of work. My schedule is flexible. Personally I love the rural community but I admit "city people" may struggle with the rural lifestyle, but if you love the outdoors this is the place for you, and best of all no traffic (I HATED big city commutes and rush hour traffic in Salt Lake and non of that is here)!

Working closely with the Admin team, I have found that SVMC really looks out for the best interest of it's employees. They provide an excellent paid leave program. 
SVMC feels more like a family than just coworkers. I have seen all the employees pull together to help another coworker who is going through cancer, loss of a family member, or just came onto a hard time. Everyone has such a big heart and gives what they can and together it turns into a lot.
I feel proud to be part of such a wonderful team!!

The hospital recently changed systems with little to no training for anyone.  They also brought in another company to do billing that only cares about how much money they can get from the patients. I might as well be a biller now because I have to keep fixing that company's mistakes. Management plays favorites and if your not one of their pets, you get shafted. CEO gave a big speech about how money is too tight and they aren't even going to try to compete with the other hospital in the area for pay and benefits yet they bought a jet, new buildings, and brought in a 3rd company to tell the billing company how to do their job.

Staff helped each  unit when needs were greater, such as when ER was busy OR staff would go help out.  Core leadership would meet weekly to go over needs of the units and where resources were needs and review of budgetary items and capital equipment needs to ensure each unit had what they needed to meet the needs of the patients and improve employee efficiency.
Has an employee appreciation committee that worked with administration to find ways to show employees were appreciated with monthly activities and summer and holiday events for family.

SVMC is a good place to work. There are always strengths and weaknesses at a work place. SVMC does work to provide compassionate care and being a part of a company that is compassionate in taking care of patients is important. The benefits are slowly going down hill, but it is great they are still providing employees with options. Administration can be rough at times and not sure if they value employees as they should. Overall, a good hospital to work for. I have also noticed in my years of working, they do have quite a bit of turnover.
