A typical day a my current job with the State of Rhode Island is to assist 4 buyers in the Purchasing department. Every day is a new experience as to I helped carry-through the process of procurement. This includes: Assisting with the organization of a public bid, posting it on the website, tabulating results when the bid is due. After the buyer makes a final selection, I will sent a award letter to the selected vendor requesting documents. At that point, I establish communication with this vendor helping them meet all necessary requirements in time including Minority Business Plans and Equal Employment opportunities departments guidelines. When this process reaches the end, my role is to issue a purchase order and direct them to vendor, agency and sometimes a transparency portal when projects are above a 1 million dollars. At the same time, I cooperate with other situations that may arise a given day as well as being available for my supervisors for any other assignments.

The biggest challenge about working at DHS is working with people who do not have the qualifications or skills to do the job or contribute to a team. They are short staffed in just about every department. Management does not support in ways that matter. When an employee leaves, it takes weeks/months to fill their position. Training sucks, you are never trained by a person who actually touches the work unless you take a common role. Office equipment and building conditions are terrible and antiquated. 

On the positive side, you have a stable job that offers you work life balance, and ability to work from home with some positions. Most positions are 35 hour weeks. You get plenty of sick/vacation time. If you don't care about work ethic, you can be the worst employee ever and the union will still protect you to the end. 

The schedule is probably the worst I have ever seen. It is a fixed schedule with set days off. You will not get on a day shift or get weekends off for YEARS! Typically have midweek days off and work 3p-11p. No rotating holidays either so if it's your day to work normally then you are working the holiday. Constantly being held over for another 8 hour shift. The facilities are old and environmentally in poor condition and you never see administration. It is entirely set up for the older workforce. The pay is okay but considering we worked through COVID and  promised the world - yet still no contract! They don't care about the staff and it is a negative, toxic environment to work in.  I will say, for a prison it is rather safe but lacks brotherhood despite the "brotherhood" union - who is also to blame. Also, it takes forever to get hired! They are slowly chipping away at the benefits as well, it's getting more expensive for less coverage.

Working in highway maintenance offered a variety of work to be done on a daily basis. No two days were ever the same which is a plus.   Supervisors were mostly good to employees but there was some animosity amongst different supervisors which made the environment less than enjoyable. 
Be prepared for mandatory over time during snow season (which makes sense) but then it turned into mandatory overtime for "Rain Events" during warmer weather, especially during election years when certain politicians are running for reelection.  There was also over night overtime that was "Highly Encouraged" which is a turn off. 

The pay was subpar

This is a terrible workplace. The staff at ESH is extremely low skilled from Mental Health Workers to Registered Nurses. They are unable to properly assess a situation and offer proper response whether that is deescalation or basic nursing treatment. There are no policies so it is a free for all to do the work. They sleep literally through the entire day/night. I am quite surprised more deaths have not occurred here simply from the inadequacy of the care. Best part, who do you tell? No one. They will tell you they are all in it to win it, meaning a paycheck and get out. The management is less skilled than the security team. Everyone with sense is leaving to avoid risk to their licenses due to the toxic environment.

Monitor and guide individuals on work readiness. How to analyze, systematically build, customize client employment information and skills to best market themselves. Much support from management but limited with regard to resources. My team is amazing and a really
"well oiled machine", everyone plays a significant role in the overall outcome of the people it affects. Most difficult may be managing a tough demographic, some have difficulties adjusting from what they're
accustom to (cultural, environmental, long term exposure) and antiquated technology. I love what I do and love that I am truly able to help the people in our program and their families.

A typical day at work is not typical but can be rewarding. No day goes as planned. The toughest part about the job is the lack of self-care due to high demand of caseloads and at times, lack of clear guidance. The court process can be intimidating… Your experience is going to depend on your training and organization! You can survive working for the Agency, keep your personal values and ethics clear; and explore your options if experiencing burn out!

I was responsible for production control - 24/7 running of the production environment interfaces and transfers. And I worked with windows servers 2008 and on (configuring, adjusting and executing). I also, was responsible for off the shell products for file transfer (SMPP, STP) and mainframe movement. I also scheduled jobs and navigate infrastructure. And secure 
File transfer. Also, production control , mainframe and batch processing, JCL job control language. And Production control – mainframe and batch processing, JCL job control language Server administration. Also Red hat Linux support and Administration .

What is the best part of working at the company?
I worked with a wonderful group of people and had very knowledgeable supervisors and managers.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I enjoyed my work. I found helping people in their time of need rewarding.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
We were always busy, not much down time. The day went by quickly.


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My position took me out of the office daily. once home visits were completed ,I had to be in the office to handle phone calls and data entry from the information received at home visits.

Working for DCYF was certainly an experience and takes a special person. Highly stressful position that requires one to focus on work life balance as some of the situations with children can be very saddening and have quite an effect of you. But, over all was a good experience and definitely made a positive difference in the lives of some children and families.
