I worked at Steel Dynamics in Colombia City, Indiana for two Summers (2017 and 2018), and even though I didn't work in the Steel Mill or anywhere like that, I never felt like I was in immediate danger. During my first Summer I worked mainly in the warehouse receiving packages, working on spreadsheets, dusting and painting. My second Summer I worked with the grounds crew working on general upkeep of Steel Dynamics and I worked in the administration building organizing papers and helping IT with certain tasks such as counting certain items in storage. My favorite part of the job and also the most difficult was receiving packages in the warehouse. I enjoyed learning where everything was stored in the warehouse and it was challenging because I had to make sure that the computer inventory system was up to date based on items received. Both the management and other workers were very nice and I enjoyed working with them. The working experience was pleasant for the most part and the most important takeaway was gaining experience working in a larger work environment than what I was used to in another part-time job. Steel Dynamics is definitely a place that I would send my resume to in my search for employment in a professional position.

My internship at Steel Dynamics is going very well and I really enjoying working there.  I am basically unsupervised but I do have a mentor checking up on me periodically and he is also a resource when I have questions.  

I have learned a lot about several things that include database connections, writing complex SQL statements, proper coding techniques, and how to see a project through from start to finish. 

My co-workers are really supportive and are there for me when I need support. 

The hardest part of my job is the fact that I have to be ready for anything.  I may have to work on a printer in the mill one day and then help accounting with a end of year closing the next day.  It keeps me on my toes and I have different challenges thrown at me all the time. 

The most enjoyable part of my job is the learning.  I get to learn a lot about several departments throughout the organization, get to learn new programming languages and software packages, and gain invaluable real world experience.

This company takes care of its employees. The only downside of this job is the rotating shift. 4 on 4 off, 9-9 rotating from morning to nights every week for majority of postions. In the summer it is blazing hot and in the winter it’s freezing cold. You don’t have designated breaks, you might be eating lunch while working. If you want to advance you will have to bust your butt and wait on an opening which might take sometime. But this is somewhere you can make a lot of money as an entry level employee with no where to go but up. My only advice is to stay away from shipping. It is predominately white, but as a black man, I feel comfortable with everyone around me. I’m treated just the same. 

Steel Dynamics offers solid pay and good benefits, especially if you’re willing to work hard and deal with a demanding environment. Production goals and keeping operations running can sometimes seem to take precedence over addressing ongoing equipment or workplace concerns.The work itself can be interesting and teaches you a lot about process operations, troubleshooting, and teamwork. However, morale can be low depending on department leadership, and communication between management and operators is often lacking. Expectations for production are high, but equipment reliability and staffing don’t always match those expectations. Work-life balance can be difficult with shift work, and there are times where employees feel more like numbers than valued team members. Overall, it’s a place where you can make good money and gain experience, but the culture and management support could improve tremendously.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There are many perks of SDI! 4 days off, great retirement program (If you're into the 401K scam) Starting pay is pretty decent for the work you do, stocks given to you every November, Profit sharing in March, and an onsite cafe. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Knowing that the opinions of others will dictate how fast you move into new jobs. If you do not like fast paced work this is not a place for you. The schedule leaves you with little sleep and rarely time to eat a good meal. (plan to live off snack foods) 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment can be fast paced and demanding at times. Every supervisor is different and lets their people get away with certain things. Culture is lackluster in most areas. It's a family and friends promoted first environment.

SDI butler really is a great place to work. The culture and people are awesome and you have the opportunity to make great money (avg is 110k a year) while also building a great retirement package. 401k matching changes quarterly but as the moment its 50%. However, you are paid that well for the inconvenience to your family. You will miss holidays, birthdays, etc. The swing shift can be hard on you but the 4 days off are nice. That’s if you get the full 4 days off. If you want OT, it’s an open door to go in and train or work a position for bonus. No union also means you can learn any position you want, and seniority doesn’t play a role in advancement. You just need to figure out if you want to sacrifice some of your family life for it.

A true lean manufacturing environment. The company champions the opportunity to lead and acquire business resources to control the cost of making engineered products within customers requirement safely delivered within time and schedule.

There is a high value in keeping ex military service personnel in the organization (IT, supervisors, engineers, SME, technicians)
to protect the business process quality guarantee being practice in every portion of the mill operations and reliability maintenance.

Steel Dynamics is a profitable, record breaking steel production plant. I have been happy to call this company home for the last few years. Every employee is friendly and more than willing to help anyone without question. They pride themselves in work culture. Management, however, is losing touch with their employees. The company is growing at a seemingly exponential rate and it seems what was once called the "mother ship" of steel production is taking a back seat to corporate's agendas. Still an excellent place to work. I enjoyed every moment. It should be mentioned that the hardest part of the job isnt production, Instead,  its the mandatory swing shift (day/night) for all employees.

A typical day always had surprises and new adventures allowing me to grow as a professional. I learned many valuable lessons including how to work with people from different backgrounds, how to communicate effectively, how to hone my skills as a safety intern and to implement my ideas into my work. The other employees there were always friendly and helpful in all aspects. The hardest part would be to stay on top of all of the tasks but through the help of everyone around me it was very enjoyable to do. The entire job was enjoyable and it was great to make lasting relationships with my fellow co-workers.
