I interviewed with the office of diversity. Talk about a utterly incompetent operation.  The director ONLY HIRES WOMAN! Very little diversity in the so called  office of diversity & equity.

This place will WASTE your time with endless interviews with totally irrelevant people. Including members if the IT dept who repair computers.   Never once have I interviewed at such a unprofessional organization. The interviews LAST HOURS.  They are good at repeating themselves with the same questions over and over to keep them busy while they waste YOUR Time.   Many incredibly qualified people are looked over so the director can get to there chosen hack without the qualifications.  So typical of civil service.  

On one interview they even had labor relations in the interview on ZOOM.   Half of them had no cameras on and you can hear them watching day time television in the background.  They could care less. They don't write anything down you tell them.   They are so distracted horsing around that they ask the same exact question one of the other interviewers JUST asked. Grossly unprofessional. 

When you finish with them they fail to send any follow up.  They schedule interviews on a whim then cancel at the last second.  Then reschedule a month later.  This place is a total clown show.   This is the direct result of putting a director who is a lawyer who never seen the inside of a court room, conduction discrimination investigations.  I feel bad for the students and staff who are sexually harassed on that campus.  Dont expect any justice when your have dummies at the head of the operation.

Typical day at work starts by checking the surgery schedule for potential participants for various studies. Morning consists of consenting patients for studies and gathering tissue samples. Afternoon usually consisted of paperwork and meetings for current research topics and planning for future endeavors.

I worked in the Maternal Fetal Medicine department and learned the ins and outs of conducting research as well as a good general understanding of various obstetric and gynecological diseases.

Time management was very important because the surgical schedule rarely ran on time, so juggling of various tasks became second nature. My boss was very busy and gave me a lot of autonomy in how I planned out the day.

My co-workers were fellow students. As a senior member of the team, I helped to coordinate the work schedule and individual assignments as well as take on various individual responsibilities, such as meeting with project collaborators with different departments. We got along very well, and I tried to foster a positive work environment so the other students could learn more effectively.

The hardest part of the job was time management. Coordinating studies with the nursing staff and physicians while managing other responsibilities was quite an obstacle course and required a lot of focus. For one particular study, I had to come in after hours on multiple occasions to enroll patients.

The most enjoyable part was being able to see the results of the research as well as learning a great deal about the field.

As a Student at SBU working for the university was perfect for me. This was my first time working within an office setting. I was allowed flexibility when I needed it and after learning the basic in's and out's of the office I was able to work independently while reporting to my supervisor to assist her as needed. I much prefer to work on my own once I'm familiar with my workplace. Generally I assisted the Mail Desk Clerk but I also assisted a couple regular Clerks with special contracts that were especially large. On any given day I would collect the mail and receiving for the day, organize and file/date stamp it as necessary. During the end of the fiscal year I would be in charge of boxing the previous years payments to be archived in order to make room for the upcoming year's purchase orders and payments. 

The most difficult part of the job would be staying organized and time management during the beginning and end of the fiscal year, when we were the most busy both in receiving invoices and making payments. Though those difficulties were well worth the general work environment and sense of community and family within the office. I loved every person I worked with and always felt appreciated and respected.

Pays less then any other hospitals in the state, requires 16 extra hours per month compared to every other hospital, does not give raises, and has a terrible theif of a union. There is also zero pay difference between units and job duties. Med/surg is paid the same as back breaking ICU, ect. Because of these factors, new nurses leave within 2 years for more pay, fair hours, a better union, and better retirement. They get their experience and they get out. Each unit is being run by new nurses, and the very few seasoned ones are tired of constantly training new nurses just to watch them leave and have to do it all over again. Each unit goes through a complete crisis with staff turnover at least once every 2 years. This is a problem that the hospital has been aware of, but does not care about. The patients are getting unsafe care, but there is no shortage of new nurses coming out of school and begging to be employed at "the great stony brook hospital", so the cycle continues with no change simply because stony brook somehow still sustains its ability to run and its good reputation. They have learned that their revenue is higher when all employees are brand new, compared to seasoned staff who require appropriate raises and recognition. Stony brook simply does not want or support good, well trained staff, and the patients suffer.

Work-life balance
Strict hours, no flexibility for any reason, expected to put job above everything else in your life, and for no appreciation or gratitude.

Pay & benefits
You get PTO time, but only what you accrue. There is no such thing as paid sick days or leave with this company, so be prepared to use your time. They also frown upon you using your time.

Job security and advancement
There is not room for advancement within this company. Some people have worked for this company for years and were passed over to hire outside managers.

Management
Managers not involved with the staff, the head of the department never involves herself with her crew. There are a couple great supervisors who have your best interest at heart there but other than that that you're replaceable. No loyalty with this company.

Culture
No compassion, sympathy for workers with families, even though the higher ups have families of their own. But they all were sent home to work during COVID while they left their office staff exposed at work.

Overall
This company will work you til you're hurting and treat you like dirt while they do it. No communication,  no advancement opportunities, little direction with projects, your family and taking care of them are not this company's problem and they will terminate you on the spot if you try to put family first.

SB is a really great teaching hospital and as a new nurse I was fortunate to start my career there.  The nurses on Antepartum are some of the greatest people I know and are all amazing caring nurses who care about their patients and each other.  The women’s health units are really beautiful with huge, private rooms and big windows.  The hospital also has a 24 hour cafeteria for the night workers and the food is fantastic!  They also have a Starbucks, Panera Bread and Jamba Juice that are open until late evening.  Only draw back is the parking.  They charge you for parking and there is a bit of a walk from the parking lot.  They also do not pay very well in comparison to other hospitals of their caliber and the state benefits, although still quite good, have diminished quite a bit over the years so the newbies are not getting the same as those who have been there for years.  

I open the Ambulatory Surgery Center at 5:30, I arrive in the computer the patients that are due to come in for surgery that day, after that is complete I then cross, in the computer, each patient into the OR so pharmacy is able to get the medication ready for each specific patient that is having surgery and require medicated perscribed by the surgeon. Upon completion of surgery, I discharge each patient in the computer with the appropriate discharge time. I do assist with patients in pre-op,(taking hcg specimens, assist them in getting into gowns,and explain the process of what will being happening, etc.) Often assist in recovery, as needed. I do have much knowledge with insurance and medical terminology as I have been in the medical field for 30 yrs.

A typical day at the Media lab consisted of my doing a brief inventory check, then responding to emails from clients and helping in advertise the services of that my office offered. I learned a great deal of office management skills, as well as important design skills, such as utilizing action script. My co-workers we mostly computer science or computer engineering students who had all challenged me intellectually , witch was a a pleasure to experience. The hardest part of the Job was possibly the paper work I was in charger of. In addition to be being the resident designer I was in charge of the paper work, things like receipts and inventory check list. After the first week or so, I got the hang of it, but it certainly was hard to maneuver at first. The most enjoyable part of the day was dealing with my clients. I liked the face to face contact I had with them.

What is the best part of working at the company?
If you are the first person to go to HR they believe you. Your bosses are so fake. You get no training and thrown into the work then get criticized for doing it wrong 3 months later. They lie on intakes for patients charts. They discuss patients openly when they leave infront of others 


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working with bosses that treat you like garbage. They work you like a dog and pay u so low compared to other places. Bonuses are only given out when you do more than your job requires and the requirements are so ridiculous 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Bunch of bullies. They don't work together. If your not liked they will make sure you don't want to work there. Favoritism is definitely shown and nothing is done

Dealing with sick patients and doctors who hate their jobs
