Typical day at work :
Arrive at 6:45 am. clock in, have morning assignments given, get report from previous shift nurse (LPN or RN). Be assigned 4 patients/beds (more when understaffed). Be split between 2-3 PCT's who were caring for 8-10 patients and they inturn were split between 2-3 nurses. Rarely 1 PCT to 1 Nurse. Very often had late lunches ( if we had lunch at all). Coordinate pt. cares between ancillary staff (xrays, lab, procedures, dialysis, outside appts. and pt discharges to either home or other care facilities.).
Pass medications and monitor IV"s and IV special drips/ pain control IV pumps. Keep track of patients on Cardiac monitors and get report from monitor techs. Monitor patients pain levels frequently and give pain meds as ordered.
Call doctors and/or their RN or PA to get or recieve orders for their patients. Make rounds with doctors. Follow up with oral or written orders.
Make sure patients recieved correct meals and monitor I/O, drainage systems. Answer call lights. Assist pt with their ADL's.
Report to family members if indicated.
Monitor Diabetic patients and their Insulin needs. Monitor Renal Dialysis patients.
Admits and direct admits and discharge patients. Obtain medical histories and medications. Patient teachings.
Give days report to oncoming nurse for the night shift.
Finish any nursing notes/ meds/ orders.
Clock out and go home.

What I learned: That people in general just want to be respected and taken care of adequately and professionaly with an attitude of special kindness while they are sick or dying in what ever journey of life they are on at the time. Everyone is very different and those differences make us who we are.

Most hardest part of the job: Taking care of patients and getting all their procedures done on time.

Most enjoyable part of the job: Taking care of the patients themselves and their families. Knowing I made a difference in their
cares.

Co-workers: As a whole come and go. Some friendships are made with those who stay longer and some have clicks with special friends. Sometimes being mis-understood. Try to work out or resolve differences and sometimes that does not happen no matter what you try.

Managers: Some are good and some not so much. Some should not be managers at all. Some "let their ships sick alone" and some pitch in and help. The ones that help are more respected than the ones who don't. Same thing goes for charge nurses.

Overall, I enjoyed my job and what I did but not because of the employer, because of the patients. The patients and a very select few co-workers are why I stayed so long. You will get floated to other locations all throughout Stormont, even to do laundry. You know certain rolls require certifications? That don't matter and they don't care. You are just a body in a position, just a number. If you have any concerns with needing accommodations, you might as well look elsewhere because let me tell you firsthand. This place does not care about you or your concerns or problems. Especially mental health, personally a request for mental health accommodations was denied because "It has nothing to do with the job" When in fact it had everything to do with the job. They ask you to take money out of your paycheck and put it back into the organization, for a place that is "non-profit" they sure really screw the employees. yeah, our pay may have seemed great and all, until you seen those pay stubs. Might as well kiss 5-6 hundred of it goodbye because they tax it like crazy. Insurance was ok, still had co-pays, vision did not cover much. Insurance prices are also based on tier's which is broke down into how much you make hourly. Also, if you carry the weight of co-workers and you finally get tired of it and get burnt out, you will get wrote up for not doing your job. And they do not do anything to help with the burn out, they do not help with addressing why you are slowing down or try in any way to help the situation. They let you sink. You are just a number here; they do not care one bit about any of the employees. Save yourself the time and look elsewhere. Cause there is no job that you should have to medicate yourself for just so you can get through the day at the job. Don't worry about getting small moments or being nominated for person of the moment because it will not be acknowledged, only what you do wrong will. Oh, and plan to apply 20+ times before you even get a call for an interview. But they complain because they don't have employee's... probably because they make it hard to get hired on and they treat their employees like trash which is why the turnover rate is so high. In the end, met some wonderful people amongst the patients while there. However, if I knew back then what I know now, I would have never applied.

Med/Surg:
-Getting Pt's up to chairs (if possible & as per orders)
-Obtain Q4H Vitals
-Obtain Blood Glucose on Pt's with T1/2DM
-Performing EKGs (both STAT and as per orders, Q(2/4/6/12)H/Shift)
Assist during Code Blues by performing CPR, Breaths using BVM, performing EKGs, etc.
-C/C Incont. Pt's Q2H
-Turn Pt's Q2H as per orders
-Document I/O's Q2H
-Assist Pt's with ADLs (Showering/Bathing, Elimination, Shaving, Oral Care, etc)
-Answer Call Lights

ED: 
-Assist in Triage by taking Vital Signs, EKGs, and Pain Assessments.
-Assist Pt's to/from CT/MRI/X-Ray
-Assist RN in Admitting EMS Admits & Direct Admits from other, smaller Hospitals
-Assist during Code Blues by performing CPR, Breaths using BVM, performing EKGs, etc.
-Assist in Transferring Pt's to Inpatient Units.
-Answer Call Lights

ICU: 
-Assist RN's in Admitting new Pt's
-Performing Q2H Turns as ordered
-Documenting Q2H I/O's
-Assist during Code Blues by performing CPR, Breaths using BVM, performing EKGs, etc.
-Answer Call Lights

Workplace Culture:
-Depending on the Unit and also who is working, It can be great or it can be terrible.
-The old saying "Nurses eat their young" has never proven to be more true than it was here, especially for the OG RN's and Management. 
-The Stormont Mantra that they love to parrot "We Together" is an absolute joke. 

Pro's:
-Patients are amazing.
-Majority of Coworkers are Amazing
-Charge RN's allow you to pick up shifts alot, allowing you to really rack up hours and pay if you are so inclined.

Con's:
-Management plays favorites. Your successes will not be recognized almost ever. Meanwhile your failures and mistakes will be honed in on and touted as often as possible. There's no benefit-of-doubt or empathy. 
-Taking initiative and going above & beyond is seen as arrogant ambition.

I’ve worked for Stormont for nearly a decade and while I’ve gained wonderful knowledge and skills - I can say I do not plan to retire from then. They recently made changes to the pay but I (and several coworkers) do not feel we are compensated appropriately. It is disheartening the education we have, or the time we’ve put in, the extent we go to perform well - and still make less than competitors pay. They’ve made changes to benefits that many have been upset with. For example: for PTO, the long term employees are losing their time off they were receiving, so while I gained time, they lost theirs and I don’t feel that was okay. 
Aside from promotions and following you’re 90-day review, do not expect any pay raise until the new year (merit) of the 3-4% no matter how well your work ethic is. My experience on the floor - I’ve seen the RN’s on their cell phones more than giving patient care and to know they get paid the amount they do for that is discouraging alone.I’ve seen CNA’s perform more care and communicate and don’t feel they get paid well enough. They do not look at how well you perform job duties until you “don’t perform well”. Administration has priorities in different areas. They give us surveys to complete every now and then on how we feel there but I’ve never heard back from them. It seems as if input on employment there from employees is not appreciated. You’re just a number here. 

The manager had favorites and it was all very clique based. If you weren't part of the clique they were after your job. I'm not saying this lightly either. I have actually overheard nurses talking together saying things like "if you report this and I report this it's sure to be enough to be rid of ___". I'm good at what I do but they would write me up for the stupidest reasons. Example; a confused patient said "the woman in red is attacking me" and I got a corrective action because I was wearing maroon scrubs and they "take all patient accusations seriously. 
Another time I came to my charge nurse because I was unclear about one of the rules only my floor had (nowhere else in this hospital was it applicable and it made absolutely no sense). She told me what to do, and what was expected of me. So i followed her instructions and within the same week I got a corrective action for "false documentation". My manger said she could fire me on the spot and to explain myself. I explained what my charge nurse said and the manager let me off with just the corrective action. After that the charge nurse was completely rude to me and im sure it's because I ratted her out instead of losing my job over her. But all these write ups add up and make me look like a terrible employee. 
I lost my job over multiple write ups that were honestly very stupid and irrelevant. The manager a disgusting person who is unfit to be a manager. 
I love everything about my job. However I've had the worst experience from this hospital. Management and cliques are a huge issue. Would not recommend.

Face to face customer service in meeting, greeting, serving, and checking out customers/ employees. I continued to learn how to deal with large groups of people, high demands of service, short on help and time. The management team only helped at peeked times and only until their lunch times. They were finger pointers, stop what your doing because I see what's more important to be done, riding your back on where you go, how long it takes to get something done and write you up on any department policy to have a record of why you are not the best employee. The hardest part of my job was the different shifts with their time differences, working a 12-8:30pm and coming back in at 6am the next day and then going back to a 10am the next. The most enjoyable part of my job was being able to bring a smile or a comforting meal to a customer who needs just a little understanding at this time in their life.

Clock in, we would go through report of all the patients there, and then I'd get more in depth report from the other tech.  I'd start by making lists for the day of what needs done. 
 Baths, blood sugars, turns.  
I'd do our daily check list for all of the iquipment needed on our unit, and then I would go through all the patient rooms introducing myself as their tech for the day, filling out their information board.
I'd restock all of the supply drawers for the nurses for that day.  
Then I'd go back around and start on blood sugars and turns. 
Then I'd go back around and start on baths.  
The rest of the day would consist of blood sugars, turns, transporting and landing new patients, and charting daily intake&output of each patient, along with other charting.  
I'd help the nurses with whatever they needed.   There was always something to be done.  Never a dull moment, that's for sure. 

During my years at Stormont Vail HealthCare, I transitioned from a street paramedic to Nurse Practitioner. I not only grew in my career but I watched the company grow as well and proud to be a part of that.  Magnet Status, a certification by AANC, was obtained during my years there. I was proud to serve on the Professional Development Council as a member and Chair. During this time our committee was charged with forming a pathway for professional development of the nursing staff. 
As an employee of Stormont Vail, I began work in the laboratory’s customer service department and developed tools to track calls, identify problems and improve process. I continued my work as a patient care technician while going to university to bridge between paramedic and registered nurse.  Parenting, part-time school, full-time work is challenging to say the least, but I became a nurse and began my nursing career in post anesthesia care while continuing my education. Feeling like I needed more of a challenge, I moved to Intensive Care.  
I cannot say enough about the staff and support at Stormont Vail HealthCare. Their support for nursing and nurse education was paramount to my success.

Stormont Vail Healthcare at first glance may appear to be a family friendly, community oriented place to work, but after you have been hired and start working, you better hope nothing goes awry in your life where you have to miss work for any reason.  If it does, don't expect them to be sympathetic to your situation.  They will do whatever they feel necessary to get rid of you in a legal way and still make it look like it was your fault.  The ER is run by two individuals who are the most senseless people I have ever met in my life.  The only reason to use Stormont's ER is because your insurance won't cover anywhere else.  Also, if you're a STV employee, make sure you don't 'overuse' the insurance.  You better hope you or your family members don't get ill and have to use the insurance benefit because they monitor this very closely and I have seen long time employees lose their jobs because they were ill and had to utilize the resources that are an employee BENEFIT to them.

A typical day in the ER department we would start with a briefing of how the night went how many patients we had left from nights and receive report on them. We would then start with our morning daily duties of cleaning and preping for the patients that would come in later that would need medical assistance. 
 I learned to be a team player and to always think quick on my feet and to be prepared for anything.
 Management was always working with you to serve the patient in the best way.
 Workplace culture was always to be excellent in all we do how we relate to others and our patients.
 Hardest part of the job is when you have done your absolute best and it wasn't enough to save the patient life. And then still go on because you have others that need you and your work is helping them heal.
 Is being able to see patients outside the hospital doing well. The relationship I have made over the years are binding and like I went to war with these people. They are my family.
