What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working for this company is the flexibility it offers. Substitute teachers have the ability to choose assignments that fit their schedule, preferred locations, and comfort level, which can be helpful for maintaining a work-life balance. The role also provides exposure to a variety of school environments, grade levels, and classroom settings, which can be valuable for gaining experience and building relationships across different schools.

Even with that drawback, the ability to pick and choose when and where you work remains one of the more positive aspects of the position.

The most stressful part of working for this company is the lack of job security and the absence of a fair, transparent process when issues arise. Substitute teachers can lose access to assignments or be removed from schools based on “Do Not Use” requests without any independent verification of what actually happened. Even when given a chance to respond, there is no clear indication that the employee’s side is meaningfully considered.

This creates constant uncertainty, because your ability to work can be affected by a single complaint that may be misunderstood, exaggerated, or inaccurate. Since the company prioritizes maintaining relationships with partner schools, it can feel like substitutes are not fully supported when conflicts occur.

Additionally, the unpredictability of assignments and the possibility of being suddenly blocked from work without clear explanation adds to the stress. There is a sense that even when you are doing your job to the best of your ability, your continued access to work is not entirely within your control.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment at this company is highly dependent on maintaining relationships with partner schools, often at the expense of fair treatment for substitute teachers. While the company presents itself as supportive and professional, in practice the culture places significantly more weight on client (school) feedback than on the employee’s perspective.

One of the most challenging aspects of the work environment is the lack of a balanced review process. When issues arise, particularly “Do Not Use” (DNU) requests from schools, the company does not conduct independent investigations or verify claims. Even when substitutes are given the opportunity to respond, their input does not appear to meaningfully impact the outcome. This creates a culture where decisions can feel one-sided and leaves employees without a clear or transparent way to defend themselves against inaccurate or disputed claims.

Additionally, job security can feel uncertain. Because assignments are controlled through a portal and can be restricted at any time based on school requests, substitutes may experience sudden loss of work without warning or clear explanation. This can contribute to a sense of instability and lack of control over one’s employment.

Overall, while the role itself offers flexibility in scheduling, the broader work culture may feel transactional rather than supportive. Substitutes are expected to maintain high professional standards, but there is limited accountability on the part of partner schools, and minimal procedural safeguards in place to ensure fairness when concerns are raised.



What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day either consists of getting to a school that was booked in advance, or waking up trying to find a job that suits you. Keep in mind, if you don’t have an assignment and they have vacancies, they are going to call and email you basically “telling” you to pick up assignments.  They won’t come out and say it directly but they will say little stuff like, “we expect our subs to be up and ready to accept assignments at 6 am,”  to passive aggressively insinuate they are taking it as a call-off that they’ll hold against you, if you don’t mark yourself unavailable.

The application process was easy—but thorough— and the company’s online platform is easy to navigate to accept teaching assignments and update profile information. 

The pay is good, and the work is not especially challenging—but at the same time, it does take a certain attitude and mindset to effectively manage a classroom and a schoolday itinerary, and to ignore the backtalk and disrespect that students can sometimes exhibit. Every workday is a dynamic, unique, and interesting experience.

Management is supportive, accommodating, and tuned-in, to the needs of their clients and workforce alike, and they are readily available by phone for extended hours. In two years time I’ve never had any problems with the company, or with any of the client schools, and I have always felt welcomed, appreciated, supported, and equal, in every role I’ve taken on, at every school I’ve worked at. 

I’m going to start by saying that the company itself is not bad but I am more so reviewing it for my area specifically. In the Flint area there weren’t very many opportunities at all my first week there I was only able to get a day and a half. The days are very long about an hour longer than regular schools. Not a lot of choices when it comes to preference in age or grade of the kids that you would like to work with. You could commute to Detroit but why waste gas and wake up an hour earlier Just to do the same long miserable hours that are offered in Flint and get paid the same. Only use your gas lose your sleep and waste your money? If a school complains about you, They block you from taking any other assignments which can really mess up your money for the week until they have a stupid little meeting with you. If you’re in the Flint area just go to edustaff the extra money being offered here is not what it seems

Don’t get me wrong. I love what I do every day. The students I meet,  me seeing them improvement and their little eyes keeps me motivated, as I wake up at six in the morning.

However, I work as a long-term sub so that means I’m doing every single thing a teacher does but I’m only being paid $150 a day.

 They keep you in a six month noncompete contract so even though the school that I work with is awesome and they want to hire me and pay me significantly more. I can’t accept the job because ISS wants to get paid! 

They LIE!!! I’m a long term sub and I’ve never been paid $200. Don’t believe that!! They are not the highest paying sub agency. 

I can’t wait until I’m out of this contract!! There are better agencies don’t do it!! 

For this to be a job that offers contingent work, they try to force you into taking long term daily shifts that they are aware of being at really bad schools, making the job not a very flexible job, especially considering they don't pay enough for daily shifts. Also shows no concern for their employees that get Ill and need sometime off work, the placement manager will take away the opportunity for getting assignments that best fits you, and instead make only available to you what they are willing to have you fill (The assignments they badly need filled that other employees have stop accepting).  They also make you pay for a teaching certificate, yet not tell you where your permit is useful, such as what schools or district. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
I would like to highlight the great customer service and the opportunities for work. Great relationships with schools they had agreements with. Easy access to assignments available, I would definitely work with this company again in the future.

none There were no stressful parts everything was straightforward. 



What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Inclusive and very organized. They really take time and emphasize hiring the right kind of people.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
After agreeing to my assignment, making sure I attend the location and start on time.

1. The website to pick up job assignments is either having problems or the assignments get picked up in .5 seconds so it’s nearly impossible to get one unless it’s an assignment that no one else wanted.

2. The contract has a sort of non-compete clause in it. I was working as a substitute with hopes to make connections to get a full-time teaching position in August. I was informed that the school could not hire me unless they wanted to pay $17,000 to STS because I had worked there for less than a year. I was clear in my interviews of my intentions with the job and that I wanted this to be a stepping stone for 6 months and it would have been nice if this huge detail was explained to me. 

The pay is great $240 daily for many schools. The problem is most schools are not near me, or in “unsafe” areas. I’m quite selective with where I will go due to safety reasons. I refuse to drive 45 minutes to work, and they bug you endlessly about taking a job last minute or long term. They say it’s flexible but they really just want you ready and available at the drop of a hat. The pay is high for subbing, but there’s a reason why, no one wants to work at the schools they partner with. Then you get a management email that’s rude about how not taking jobs is “unacceptable”. If the company is in such dire need of employees, maybe be nice to the ones you have. This is a no for me.

No stress related to the company but working as sub is a stressful job due to have to work for different schools. But once you know the school is better and also if you don’t like it you can block that school
