As a long time provider of this agency in Adult Behavioral Health services, i can't believe that i would have stuck with this company too long if I did not have the support and clinical instruction and  guidance that i did so long ago. The work-life balance is what YOU as an employee need to achieve and set limits on what you are willing to do for the job or not. The compensation for a full time employees would be medical benefits, but hourly pay still does not make up for that and forget about getting above a 1.5  or 2% raise increase per year, even if you achieve your "quota" of production for the year. Due to the pandemic effects , good luck if you needed help from other providers/supervisors b/c no one is around the office much ( needing to leave a message on TEAMS, email or personally call text a team member). I find that there is quite a bit of tension between the administrative staff members as well. No one likes to observe in house arguing. We dont really do much to to promote workplace culture either ( especially when no one comes to the office much). Dont get me wrong, i love doing what i do, and the clients are so very in need and are mostly appreciative of the services . As a clinician,  it is valuable experience to be able to experience and work with folks from all cultural backgrounds and various mental health disorders working in community mental health. And while i comment on this organization, be it known that the  worker's experience is very likely the same within other community mental health organizations.

I would say to proceed with caution; however, take this review with a grain of salt.  Upon relocating to Cincinnati, I began networking and the Talbert House became a reoccurring theme based on the connection between the populations they serve and my passion for helping underserved communities.

After networking and interviewing, I obtained an entry-level position.  I will be transparent and state, I was overqualified; however, at the time the money did not matter.  In the first week, I instantly spotted the organizational dysfunction and poor job culture.  It was due to a colleague sharing some wisdom that kept me from leaving.  I stayed a total of five months and by that time I was, "Over it!"

My supervisor couldn't be trusted and the moment you fell out of those good graces, then you had an X on your back.  It's about what you can do for them, but your cup is never replenished.  After having a transparent conversation with my supervisor about her ineffective leadership, here came the write up.  The write up was furnished in October for attendance infractions from late August and early September- mind you, there was no clear call-in procedure!  It is literally the blind, leading the blind and they are always looking for someone to take the fall.

I could go on, but that won't be necessary.  This was my journey and now being on the other side I learned a lot.  The biggest lesson was how tight-lipped individuals are here.  As I move about the city of Cincinnati, whenever the Talbert House name comes up, it is associated with dysfunction.  And, on the inside, I scream, "where were you months ago!?!"  However, I chuck it up to experience and found my peace.

I really enjoyed my job and felt as though I had mastered many skills that benefit the position. Over the course of five years in a Case Management position I was fortunate to work with many other professionals who influenced my work a great deal. I was also able to  earn accommodations for employee excellence/exceptional customer service two years in a row (2013,2014). As well, I was often able to earn bonuses for surpassing utilization requirements. 

I am a person who believes that we, as people, are never through learning. I believe that I will be given many opportunities to gain more knowledge and experience in my field and I look forward to any challenges that may arise. I am not afraid to ask questions because I am self-sufficient and would like to be able to complete a task on my own the next time around. 

I really truly enjoy social work and have worked primarily with consumers with (intensive) mental illnesses. I have some experience working with client's who suffer from substance abuse as well. Ultimately I am doing this work for the consumer, I work to help my client's become as self-sufficient as possible and I understand that changes based on the person. I care very much about my client's physical, mental and emotional health as I know that each are very connected. 

I establish healthy boundaries with clients while building rapport and gaining trust. It is important to make a connection with most people in order to help them, however it is equally important that the client understands the boundaries of the professional relationship as well.

A typical day at work. I would check fax machine and put document in appropriate mail boxes. Checked incoming mail and put documents in appropriate boxes. Answered phone calls and transferred calls to appropriate lines. Greeted clients and Notified the appropriate case workers of the client's arrival. Ensured that all clients and visitors sign-in, Pulled drug screen results off of copy/fax machine and place in appropriate mailboxes.Obtained documentation from clients to begin intake process-social security card, photo id, insurance card, Medicaid card, verification of address, employment. Notified case worker when client is ready for registration. Collected client`s fees and provided receipts. I did all billing process for Adult Services. Entered client`s payments onto spreadsheet and send electronically to Manager by 4:30 daily. Completed chart reviews at intake and termination to ensure all paperwork is present and signed. Disassembled Charts at discharge and place in manilla folder. Completed filing on Thursdays and Fridays1:30 to 4:30. Kept office supplies stocked. Ordered office supplies form contracted items list from Office Depot and send all packing slips to  Finance Department. Ordered coffee supplies when needed. I learned to follow policy. Management was polite. My co-workers showed that they were grateful of my support. The hardest part was down time. The most enjoyable part of the job was greeting clients and visitors. Doing intake process and billing.

As a federal case manager, my day consists of meeting with clients for individual sessions and facilitating group classes, as well as documenting and filing all necessary paperwork. I work to help clients achieve goals in order to ease their transition from prison to a pro-social life. 
I have learned many things from working in this position. First, I've become acquainted with the Bureau of Prisons and Federal Probation office, learning different policies and regulations for my clients. Second, I have learned to facilitate group settings with groups from 2 clients up to 15, working in changing their thinking, and offering them skills to help them transition. Third, I have learned exceptional time management, often working with caseloads of 20 clients and 8 groups. Face time with clients has to be scheduled very strictly, and documentation has to be completed in a timely manner. 
The case management staff at Cornerstone is extremely helpful, positive, and knowledgable. The management however, is not. It is difficult to receive any guidance, making improvement as a case manager seemingly impossible. 
The most difficult part of the job by far is working one on one with these clients to assist them in being successful in returning to society, to watch them choose to return to criminal life, and not see the error in their thinking or risks involved.

Honestly I loved working for Talbert House but for the clients only. Being able to help them and bringing a sense of hope and positivity. When being a female workingnin corrections it's hard because it's assumed your either establishing a relationship or your bringing stuff in just because your friendly and welcome everyone with a smile. There is no sense of comradery. Everyone walks all over everyone just to get a ahead. Absolutely zero consistency rules change everyday and dont expect to be told, you should just know. There's zero leadership and when someone steps up it's for show and it's whatever that person wants to hear at that time then talks behind your back. If you care and try to help thats going out of your way and acting like a case manager and that's prohibited. Female staff are expected to have very little interaction with clients or it's precieved as spending too much time with them even when it's not just a single client it could be a whole dorm and it's still being scrutinized. If you like directness them don't expect it from Talbert house or if you have any issues or complaints don't expect them to be heard or dealt with. 

Talbert House has its hands in everything related to social services and community mental health. As a result, the organization is a jack of all trades, master of none. Employees are expected to function at a high level, exhibit significant flexibility, and manage ever-changing responsibilities and expectations. Job satisfaction is typically dependent upon assigned department, specific coworkers, and ability to advocate for self. The pay is average for most entry-level community mental health jobs, and poor for advanced degree positions. The job is what you make it, so there is valuable experience to be had, but employment there can be overly and unnecessarily taxing and unappreciative. While there, I had some excellent supervisors and colleagues, but often did not feel supported or appreciated by the organization as a whole. I was able to meet my own experiential desires and needs, but often had to put up with unrealistic expectations and demands while navigating what could at times be a toxic and/or unsupportive environment and culture. The school-based services department is fantastic, the training department is rapidly improving, and all other departments are highly dependent upon site and specific supervisor/manager/team.

This company places way to much emphasis on productivity and you are treated as a robot. Granted, since they are nonprofit I understand the need for productivity but there is minimal leniency for when you don't meet the hours. I too often hear about "consequences" of not meeting productivity hours and too little incentives for exceeding or meeting. This agency is large and that in itself makes it hard to feel like you matter. 
They do offer free opportunities for training and getting CEUs for certifications. Depending on which site you are at, administrative directors and direct supervisors tend to show some compassion and willingness to be personable with their staff. 
Benefits are ehh... I definitely think you pay a lot for only being permitted to attend to a small network of care providers. PARENTS/GUARDIANS BEWARE!! I think it's a HUGE problem that Talbert House has a plan exclusion that doesn't permit care for Children's Hospital or any outpatient facility that they have. The pay is already minimal so imagine having to foot a medical bill for your child because they won't include it in their plan (Ouch). 
They can do much better at listening to their employees. It's okay for experience purposes but there is a reason why turnover at most sites is so high.

Networking and developing professional relationships with external and internal organizations (e.g., Hamilton County Court House, State of Ohio Attorney General Office, Juvenile Detention Center, Cincinnati Police Division, YWCA Alliance for Immigrant Women (AIW), Federal Bureau of Investigation Gang Awareness Committee (FBI), Cincinnati Public Schools, Talbert House Steering Committee, and School Crisis Team). 
06-04 to 08-05	Education and training specific to mental health diagnosis; interventions to remove barriers to learning in children and adults with behavioral and mental health challenges; development of daily living skills and coping skills in special populations; advocacy, outreach, and referral to community sources; mental health symptom monitoring, and coordination of mental health treatment and related documentation.

I lasted about 3 months with this company in Food service, I loved the work, and I loved serving the at risk community gave me a sense of purpose. The clients will see that you care if your heart is in the right place they’ll both respect and love you. My problems were definitely coming from within the immediate food service department. Employees weren’t even showing up because they were so unhappy with the work and the workloads and being stuck with scarce supplies in order to carry out a days work or not having enough workers overall and everything being left on just 1 individual. The higher up that doesn’t care about employees, calling shots with lack of concern for the way things are being put out, with a crooked bias way of thinking I believe the words he used was “street people” or in other words black or low income people; in reference to both his employees and clients! Huge lack of empathy and leadership here. I would definitely avoid food service if applying and shoot straight for direct supportive services/ RA positions they require 0 experience and they will train you.
