The Chat Shop

The job itself isn't hard, it's just that they have some very bogus principles that they go by. You get oral presentations on what to expect of the job, and then you have to complete learning assignments which requires answers that aren't discussed, nor given access to.

Also, they handle bookings for a client in order to garner sales (which had become difficult because of the ongoing pandemic). When you need help regarding a specific room or other features that should already be on the website, you have to communicate with this lame "booking team" who take forever (I had to wait 30 whole minutes to get an answer about a specific room) to answer a simple question, but it takes seconds to answer a question regarding a sale (booking).

Also, they have this stupid thing where you have to come in 5 minutes before your shift to handle these chats, and will get at you if you're a minute behind that. Why would you reprimand someone for coming in at 6:56 A.M. EST (11.56 A.M. BST), when they're exact shift is at 7:00? They say it's because they want to have coverage of shifts when the previous agents leave, but this is beyond trivial.

Yes, I'm also writing because I was terminated, but they weren't valid reasons. They say I was terminated because of reasons where I didn't report to my manager when I clearly informed that idiot why I kept experiencing troubles with their site and other external matters. What makes it so bad, is that he and my trainer called before I got fired, in reference to me not clocking in within those stupid 5 minutes (when I have explained why in the first place) with valid reason. The next day, I was told my contract was terminated, and that was really unprofessional, because if they felt that way, those two morons should have said that the moment, they called me the day prior.

I was with this company for almost a year, and it was a very interesting experience. When I first got hired, it was a week long process of training with a team leader. After that, they try to set you up with all the resources you'd need to answer any questions based on your client, and you're live after doing test chats and training.  I also had an amazing opportunity watch this company grow, and so I was offered management positions multiple times which I declined. The biggest issue here is management, and those who succeed here quicky become apart of a clique that looks out for themselves, and casts shame on those around eventually driving them out. Also, the compensation from the job posting / actual pay was incorrect as they were still sending GBP instead of USD. That has since been corrected, however was a big indication of their business style. With all that being said, there's no reason to move up here other than not to be bothered by your team leader, and just to help other agents improve. Also, the amount of time I spent outside of working hours per week was around 3 hours, and that doesn't include the Slack updates that you're required to keep up with and ideally participate in. As much as I loved the work, the volume and aggressiveness constantly increased as well as the sales and conversion requirements without any type of compensation or balancing. If you don't mind being a work horse in a cliquey digital office,  then this is the job for you.

Chat shop is the worst work at home company I've ever contracted for. Training is non existent and management is unhelpful. When I interviewed I was told it would be a customer service/ support role but once thrown onto the floor it was nothing more than a pushy sales position. Some of the products and services they were trying to sell have been proven scams and when asked the Chat Shop refused to comment on it. You are hired on as an independent contractor but they expect you to work as a full time employee. No paid time off, no benefits and  no flexibility but insane and inconsistent hours. And you are expected to be available 24/7 and work on your off hours responding to emails and filling out "weekly progress reports"   You are only paid once a month! But the fishiest part about this company is that they refuse to send you the 1099 tax forms at the end of the year.  They say that because they are located in England then they are not required to send any tax information to you in the US. (Which is incorrect)  They are just a poor excuse for a company who likes to overwork it's contractors for little money and sell scams to unsuspecting people. Please be careful before deciding to work with this company, the turnover rate is incredibly high and the pay is not worth the stress.

Working with this company has been a dream come true -- but it's certainly not for everyone.

Sure you can wear your pajamas while you work, but attention to detail, the ability to reach targets, and treating your role for what it is (a job!) are key to success.

Managers are great! Team Leaders are great! Team Members are great! You would be hard-pressed to find a better company to be a part of. 

The hardest part of the job is remembering it's a job. These roles could very well be performed in a brick and mortar location, but having the luxury of working from home requires discipline. 

The best part of the job is the culture of the company! The Chat Shop is surely going place and to be a part of that family is wonderful. You're not just meeting colleagues, you're making worldwide friends.

The job itself is alright, typically responding to up to 3-4 chats at a time, for 3-4 different companies on 4 different matters.

You are expected to respond to every chat within 30 seconds even with the 4 different chats going at the same time. I am sure this is possible after some real training, but with managers often being over seas (USA) any queries will be taking a while!

After about  3 days after training I was video called to be let know they would be letting me go... no explanation or warning in regards to chat quality etc so their employees could up their game.

Please be mindful when applying to work for this company that you are underpaid and well overworked. 
Also, be mindful if you get sick and are unable to make training, they could care less and will terminate you. 
They have a high turnover rate and will just turn around and hire more people. 

I would NEVER suggest this company to ANYONE no matter how badly they need a job. 
There is no job security as they can turn around and terminate you in the blink of an eye with no forewarning. 
There is little to no support. 


A young-fun environment with supportive management. As it's a start-up company they have a lot of room to make the roles your own and allows you to learn as much as you can to grow and develop skills. There is a lot of laughs and jokes which happen as it is a young friendly environment. The most enjoyable part of the job was working alongside the team and coming together to share and create new ideas. The office has grown an incredible amount since I started.

Training is comprehensive, and they have a lot of patience for you. All the tools to succeed are at your disposal. The work itself isn't too difficult, just a learning curve in the beginning. Then it's relatively simple. They are a UK based company, so they are very progressive, and they treat you like you're a human instead of a worker with no feelings. Honestly, if the pay was better, this job would be perfect.

This was a terrible place to work. They expect you to be available 24/7, and if you have an emergency, which includes going to the hospital, you have to find someone to cover you before you can take care of it. They put unrealistic expectations on their employees, and will fire you for nothing. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

I don’t even have to say much. Just look at the job description vs. how much they want to pay.

You will be using your own computer in your own home so why are you being paid so little??

No. Nope. Negative. You are worth more than this!
