The Chicago Lighthouse

The Training was 30 days for me. Prior to COVID-19, we would have to be assigned seats for the day. That would change daily. Now, because of COVID-19, we were assigned permanent seats. Your schedule also changes daily. You could get a 10 AM lunch or a 2 PM lunch. You are assigned a 30 minute lunch and a 15 minutes break daily. You have to maintain a monthly adherence and QA score. Anything that doesn't fit inside of the rules they've set, you will be written up. You will have to deal with Illinois Tollway customers who are angry majority of the time and there will be nothing you can do for them. You will need patience for  because customers are almost never prepared. The patron will curse at you, say derogatory things and yell. There is no ACW or pause in between the calls, if its busy, the calls will be literally back to back. You will have to raise your hand to speak to a lead when calls escalate. Getting a day off is first come first serve, no matter the circumstance (my sick days saved me). Parking is expensive. When UIC closes for its breaks, there is nothing to eat. They dont provide any basic beverages like coffee or tea. I think management could be a little more genuine. It feels like people smile because they have to.  The most enjoyable part of the job are the different people I sat beside each day to work. I met some dope people from this organization. The job was paid weekly

I think this would be a good job for someone just entering the workforce. It will help you to understand what you want in a job and what you dont. For someone who has years in customer service, I dont think this would be a good fit. The micromanagement can become a bit much overtime.  However, if you need a job to get you to the next step, do what you gotta do! 

I ended up quitting. The changes to policies made a easy job stressful and harder than need be. I started bringing home negative energy and it  became hard on me mentally. I've never have a non-physical job have me so drained at the end of the day. I also felt like I was cheating some of the people that I was speaking to and that also made the job hard to bare. The job seemed more like a money grab and I was the collector. 

The Chicago Lighthouse offers solid new hire phone agent training and assistance for individuals with low or no vision (and other disabilities). Phone agents can work from home provided they have their own equipment which meets minimum requirements. Employees are offered subsidized insurance as well as company matched 401K, pension, paid holiday time, paid vacation time, and paid sick leave. The benefits are somewhat attractive, however the wages are too low for many to be able to take full advantage of them. What is the point of insurance and 401K if you can't afford to pay for them and still provide yourself with basic needs like shelter, clothing, and food? Further, the rules can be draconian and are inconsistently applied. There is no real leadership as evidenced by the rules that remain in place which are regularly circumvented. This circumvention is justified under the umbrella of "business needs," prompting the question of why these rules are established if they do not align with supporting business operations in the first place. For someone looking for a position, don’t expect much and don’t expect it to be a lucrative career. If you can get past the unnecessarily harsh rules, low wage, and monotony there are plenty of opportunities for upward mobility to develop your career, provided you can subsist on their meager pittance. 

Schedule appointments for patients. Answer telephone promptly and in a polite and professional manner.Obtain and enter accurate demographic information into ECW (address, telephone number, name of insurance or self-pay status).
  Schedule appointment correctly - review appointment date, time, location, and provider name with caller.
Arthritis, Kidney, Heart, Liver, Internal Medicine, Primary Care, Nutrition and Wellness, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease
       Inform caller of items to bring to appointment (including insurance card, medications, office visit fee, and verification of income - if applicable). Remind caller to arrive 15 to 30 minutes before scheduled appointment to complete paperwork. Remind caller of cancellation/no-show policy. Answer questions and offer other information, as requested, to provide patient-focused
●	Act as a liaison for the patients and the Health Center:
Direct calls to other departments as needed.
Use sound judgment in handling calls, especially with upset patients. Understanding of when to escalate calls to physicians/practice manager/triage nurse. Service patients Make reminder calls as requested. Make calls to reschedule appointments when necessary. Other reasonably related duties as assigned by supervisor or manager.

Unless you willing to brown nose to get some type of respect from management do not waste your time. Your Leads and co workers will the most helpful than your supervisors/mangers. 

The breaks are literally 15 mins and your lunch is 30 mins.

You will have no type of mentorship or help from your supervisor or assigned manager. However they will skip down the call center floor to your desk to give you a write up for ANYTHING  ( because that is the only thing they look forward to).. and if you were to ask for help , reset your passwords or if the system is not working the Supervisors/Mangers will speak to you with little to no respect. ALSO, if you end up getting covid 19 . THEY WILL USE ALL YOUR VACATION/SICK DAYS AND IF YOU LEAVE WORK BECAUSE YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS AFTER JUST COMING BACK FROM QUARANTINE, THEY WILL WRITE YOU UP.  They don’t care if you had covid or not. They are so willing to write you up cause they have nothing better to do. 

**System issues are a HUGE issue , and if there are system issues they will send you home. 

**Training is a waste of time, you are set up for failure and if things do not go as plan you will get written up. 


**In order for you to do most of your job you have to raise your hand to get approval from a lead. 

I can go on and on. 

I started back in November and thought it was an okay job to work along with my other job. Every thing here is outdated from the work environment, policy, etc. The place itself is nasty and disgusting. Theirs dirt, dust, bugs(bedbugs in particular), their are even mouse traps under each desk. The chairs are broken and uncomfortable. The security guards do a good job, but theirs one in particular that will just sit there and have other people open the door for you. They show favoritism to asskissers. For example, they'll let you leave early depending on how many people they need. You don't get sick/vacation time until you've been there for 6 months and you have to get permission from your manager. You have to notify them months ahead or their will be consequences. You can't miss too many days because it'll be a write up. A lot of rules they have seem to be unethical. The pay isn't all that great. For the work the csrs do, the pay should be at least $14. They don't offer extra holiday pay or great benefits, so if you apply, do it at your own risk. Also, the work environment is mainly filled with women, so be prepared to hear loud conversations near you about their kids, problems, men and baby daddies...

I have worked at this job for just over 4 years. And it has been awful for 3.5 of them. There is an unnaturally high turn over rate, so you may have new employees every couple of months  ( the whole department is less than 300 employees). Don’t expect to use the bathroom you are allowed 10 minutes a day to use the restrooms and they don’t rollover if you don’t use them for the day/week. If you go Over your time you will get a write up no matter the reason. In terms of team leads, supervisors, and managers most of them look out for themselves and don’t really care about the team they are supposed to be supporting. It is not bad you will meet some amazing people here and that is honestly the only good thing about this place  

The benefit package is bad, if  you have insurance do not accept the companies. The  prices for everything is too high for what they are offering. Even though it is Chicago and parking is horrible they provide limited parking spaces.  There is a shuttle that is supposed to take people to the designated lots and the “L” stops more often than not the shuttle will be canceled so you will have to walk in the dark  to your car. 

If you really need a job this isn’t a bad one, just keep an eye out for other job opportunities and take them when you can

The chicago lighthouse for the blind and disable reaches out to the clients and student as they work toward making each client or studendet as independpent as they can. the lighthouse also make different item such as ; talking clocks, watches, glasses, hearing aids, letter prinit items, and brialle item to help make life easer.
A day at the lighthouse starts with getting the student off the bus and into thier classroom. The students day goes according to thier needs, some start off with exercise, some with sensory, some with fine or gross motoer, mobility, occupational, physical. or speak therorpy, computer, brialle lesson, sign lauguage. most work is done one-pn-one. the thing that I learned is GOD is good. Working at the lighthouse really make me remember to thank GOD for my life.
The management was ok, I just think that my boss hide from some of the problems. There was some very good caring worker there.
The hardest part of my job was when 2 or 3 staff call in on the same day, and I have to double up staff. I think takes away from the students. The best of the job was seeing a student reach thier goals.

Was hired early 2023. Pros: You get to be home and that's always a plus. They have a lot of resources if you need it. Training is a month. Cons: EXTREMELY unorganized. They cant bend rules because the tollway is federal. For most this will be temporary. If you choose to work here don't trust your supervisors or managers. If you work at the Tollway call center, expect the technology to fail constantly and you won't get the benefit of the doubt. You will be micromanaged for any mistake. 30 seconds between calls no matter the call volume. They bait and switch the attendance policy so if you make them mad they can get you out fast. Policy is only applied according to the managers over the supervisors. If you are new, you are placed at the top of the queue to take the onslaught of calls while the rest have half as many. The customers are almost always angry because the website doesn't work right and the supervisors rarely take escalated calls because its like 35-40 reps to a supervisor. IF YOU ARE A VETERAN DO NOT WORK HERE. YOU HAVE ENOUGH PROBLEMS.

Production is very important especially when everyone works as a part of a team. We all helped each other if their where a question that a co-worker was not able to answer, we helped out before approaching the floor lead for assistance.  Employees enjoy working with each other and feel conferrable in assisting one another. 

A typical day is taking in calls that deal with ipass accounts either updating, adding funds or closing accounts. I also take in class that deal with ipass violations; I would either help lower the payment amount or inform them of our payment plain we have. I would take about 10 class an our. I learned to allow the customer say their reasons for their call before I say anything. The hardest part of the job was to deal with difficult calls that would not allow me to say a word. I would explain to them how the violation escalated and how to prevent the problem in the future. 

The most enjoyable part of the job was helping the customer over the phone and explaining to them how to system works and making sure they understood.

This place is horrible. This place has a slave mentality. Their policies are designed for you to fail. They don't want you to go to the doctor, even pregnant women. The higher ups are snooty and don't speak. They want you to lock your phone in a locker. The VP is extremely inept and none of her staff or the people that work under her even like her. Everyone is phoney and you cannot trust anyone in the organization including HR. You have  7 min break in the morning. 30 minute lunch where you are waiting for 10 mins in line for handicapped and blind people, which becomes a drag, other than that you are chained to your desk. You are questioned if you go to the bathroom too long. You can't listen to music and you are not allowed to talk due to lack of productivity. The turn over rate is ridiculous. Most people are there because there aren't any other jobs but people are still walking out. They don't care about their employees or their well being. If you need a job for right now, this is perfect except you got to jump through hoops to get in. SO NOT WORTH IT. RUN AND SPREAD THE WORD!
