The Floating Hospital

I would set the tone for the rest of the tours. I would receive the sick calls from our residents, check the temperature on the frigerator and freezer daily, stock up on equipment or items needed for labs (needles, vaccines, tubes, bags, new sharps container, specimen cups, and etc), stocked up the P.A. and M.D. equipment carts, every1st and 15th of the month conduct Quality Control's. I informed staff of the residents needed both in house and outside facilities, retrieve results daily and logged them in, assist the P.A. or M.D. in daily situations, revised of emergency kits and bag. I did administrative work such as creating new charts, merging charts together, updating and coping charts, filing, scanning, faxing, memos, typing, answering phones and questions asked, sterilized dental equipment, cleaned and sterilized exam and lab rooms, daily counts of sharps used per shift. I would ordered any vaccutainers or needles needed from lab corps, assisted the psychiatrist if needed, tranferred information to neccessary parties, maintained record form for resident as needed such as weight, vitals, blood pressure, checked the rosters daily for new or transferred residents,updated our log books (labs, ppd, urine drug test, Mccu daily list, employee ppd), contacted non-secure residents and workers from outside facilities to follow up with them, performed EkG's, planted and read PPD, vitals, blood pressure, weight and temperatures. I had to answer court orders and conduct urine drug testing, then send it off for confirmation.

I learned the correct way of reading ppd's, drawing blood when it was hard to catch a small or rolling vein. I learned how to think, react, and respond in emergency and vast situations. I learned to always remain calm and level headed. I learned to stay guarded, keep my eyes and ears open to what is going on around me while dealing with incidents. I learned how to conduct correct inventory when ordering supplies. I learned how and who to contact if any equipment was not working properly such as computers (labcorps, ACS, EKG's monitor, vital sign monitor, xerox, scanners, printers,and etc.). I learned how to keep daily logs of patients, books, sharps, and equipments. I learned how to deal with different residents and their different attitudes. I knew when it was a time to be forceful and the time to just them the residents cool off until later on. I know how to deal with the mentally challenged residents. I learned how to work accordlingly to the day to day changes. I learned to keep my supervisors updated with information because they was not on site via email or telephone. 

My managemnt was never on site on a daily basis so they would trust me to do and handle my job proficiently, accurrately and professional while they was not on site. The M.D. would be able to inform them if there were any issues with me at the site if any occurred. My supervisors was informed of any irregularities or mishaps that may have occurred and they would guide me in how to correct it, if it was neccessary. My supervisor's would visit us at the site once or twice a month to do chart reviews or etc. 

My a.m. co-workers were very pleasant to be around and work with. I can say that I have gained more knowledge and skills since being with this team. They have made my first medical assistant job experience pleasant, happy, and an abundance of joy. I enjoyed working with the M.D., P.A.'s, and Psychiatrist on site. They have taught me how to be patient and calm in different situations, They was very patient while teaching and showing me the ropes when having to do things correctly and accurately. While some other workers have made it very difficult for me by creating a hostile environment, but as me remaining patient and calm I have learned to ignore ignorant people, who didnt like for the new employees to shine and share their ideas and creative ideas to the higher up. I have learned both negative and positive things from different co-workers but overall my experience was a good teacher.

The hardest part of the job was really nothing once I got the routine down pact, it became easier and easier, but if i had to say what was the hardest part it would be having to deal with the difficult residents (teenagers) or unfair staff. Some people I worked with had a hard time separating their friendship with Code of Ethics, which made it hard for me to bring any new or easier ideas to the table to be reviewed. If their friend did not approve then they would not either. I just wanted to work in a fair and respectable environment but others made it hard for me, not the job. I guess some people are not professional enough to handle new employees and ideas so it made it hard for me to grow and show my full potential.

The most enjoyable part of my day was knowing I got through to a resident (teenager) who would keep refusing to draw blood, give urine specimen, or allow for ppd's to be implanted. I was able to educate them in why they was having these test done and its benefits to them and their health. I would always show that affirmative motherly love and support. I would help the M.D., P.A.'s, or Psychiatrist convince the kids that it was for them when the kids would reject their services. I would help calm the more aggressive and aggravated kids down and talk to them on their level where they they can understand the importance of their health and the realmifications if they dont take care of themselves. I would tell them its best to get it now while it is free and available because when you are released the doctors office is the last thing on your mind, meanwhile your health should be the first. I enjoyed working with the kids, some was unbearable but that was the challenge for me to know that I can break them and get through to them. It was a blessing to be able to work with the adolescence at ACS because majority of them came from broken homes and difficult backgrounds and it opened up my eyes to how some children have lived the life of an adult already. The teenagers have gave me a whole different outlook on innocent children, I am no longer naive. I enjoyed when the M.D., P.A.'s, or Psychiatrist will see that I was able to get through to a kid that they was having a difficult time getting through too. Overall I enjoyed my experience working with the ACS adolescents both in and out of our facilities, if i had to I would do it all over again.

I worked in the Health Education department a few years ago and was disappointed by the lack of professionalism and cultural sensitivity from those in leadership roles. The management team lacked visible diversity, which was especially striking given the communities the organization aimed to serve.

From early on, I observed unprofessional behavior, including gossip, minimal supervisory support, and communication that felt dismissive and, at times, demeaning—particularly toward staff from underrepresented backgrounds. There were instances where comments about certain communities were inappropriate and deeply misaligned with the organization’s mission.

As a person of color, I found the environment emotionally taxing and disconnected from what true community-centered health work should feel like. I believe this organization would benefit greatly from more inclusive leadership, stronger accountability, and deeper cultural competence in both internal practices and outward programming.

Before anyone would think about working here, they need to know the sacrifice that they are expected to make. There is A LOT of phone calls you r expected to make on top of checking in patients, setting patient's appointments, transferring calls to the proper department and helping anyone in need. The job is not secure. They could fire you at any point, if management says that they can't afford to keep you on board. Your job basically depends on whether or not they have the numbers (number of patients coming into the clinic for any service). They expect you to sometimes harass patients over the phone to get them to come in. I believe that the pay was worth these sacrifices for anyone who is more than willing to pay that price. I personally felt the sacrifice was not worth my time or effort due to the fact that I wanted to go back to school to pursue a degree in psychology.

A typical day at work is usually pretty busy which is ok but its very stressful. Often times your schedule is changed without warning regardless if you had things prior which is unfair. There are a few problems that should be addressed considering they already have a high turnover rate and people walk off the job for not only behavior of staff but lack of integrity or stress of higher ups within the company. The managers are unprofessional in how they speak staff as well as patients. Due to unprofessional behavior it has set a bad precedent in the workplace which has caused conflicts among staff as well as patients.

Patients are not treated with respect managers and staff laughs or gossip about patients personal life. Furthermore, there is a lot of favoritism among managers and you maybe fired without warning. The mission of this facility is amazing but, with chaos with mangers and staff he mission does not reflect the core value of this place.

A typical day at work starts at 9am by attending a morning meeting with staff, retirieving my phone messages, returning calls, scheduling appts and confirming appts for the next day and doing eligibilities to check patient Insurance. Completing providers requests through telephone encounters regarding patient appts. Making list of patients that are picked up by Van drivers for next day appts. Translating (spanish speaking) for front dest reception when needed. Checking out patients by scheduling next future appts and printing patients appts and checking for Metro Card eligibility for traveling.

The Floating Hospital is a decent job. The salary should be much more. It is a low salary and cannot compete with the cost of living in New York City. This institution does not care about their employees. All they care about are the patients and money. The staff runs this institution and they're not treated fairly. The benefits package is not up to par, either. For a company that makes such a high revenue annually, they need to do better by their employees. No raises are ever offered and nothing is given in appreciation during the holidays. Very greedy and cheap. 

All I can really say about this company is the Mangers/supervisors and HR move funny. Believe it or not your supervisors will talk behind your back, If you have nothing to offer they will let you go no hesitation & no notice. ALL Medical staff is RUDE, Behavioral health supervisor is HORRIBLE, watch out!!! Huge manipulator and gossiper (you’ve been warned) They all look out for themselves, you are replaceable. This job is not a steady job, if you are looking for stability look else where. This job is not guaranteed they will fire you no hesitation. I don’t recommend working at The Floating Hospital.

The company allowed flexibility when needed and was pretty laid back.

Grand expectations with very little structure, staffing and guidance from management.

Easy going work environment but cliques exist and no one is exempt from being gossiped about.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
phones are constantly ringing and everyone is always complaining as if it makes the day move faster.

This place is great to work while you’re in school or for short term. The employees that have been here for 10+ years all have the same in common. No degree hence no where else to go. There are a lot more bad apples here that strive on gossip. Huge problem here. And it doesn’t stop at management. Management is not helpful and will never advocate for you or the team. There’s no proper training and the organization claims to live by their mission but is only driven by money. They do not care about the patients. And they very few employees that do are treated unfairly. 

The staff very nice and the turnover rate was high which means the staff morale was sort of low while working there ... everyone was always on edge because of the production and the needs of the company .... everyone felt like they were walking on egg shells while working at The Floating Hospital because of this. They did do little things to celebrate each other and to motivate each other to come to work despite the challenging environment and patients that we cared for
