The MetroHealth System

A typical day as a Patient Flow Triage Nurse starts at 07:30, by signing in to the phones and computer. Check phone messages, respond to urgent calls first.  Review BedBoard, a computer program, that visually shows all  occupied and vacant hospital beds  for each nursing unit (medical/surgical and critical care beds).  Review available isolation beds, and quickly evaluate legitimate use of the isolation rooms. Next evaluate number of med-tele cardiac beds and critical cardiac beds available.  Speak with LifeFlight regarding any incoming emergency cases and anticipate what type of bed will be needed.  Next evaluate the Emergency Department with their charge nurse,  for any issues, delays in getting beds. Review the print-out of scheduled Operating Room cases, and anticipate number of beds needed.  Review available EEG monitoring rooms, if any.  Review outpatient procedure requests for overnight stays, and all known outpatient clinic admissions. Telephone the Admissions Triage Physician and provide a brief synapsis of hospital beds and capacity, and any issues that may impact admission and discharge delays. Prepare a report to share with Bed Huddle scheduled at 08:00 that discusses the information obtained from my review.  Lead the discussion at the BedHuddle meeting.  Discuss issues (infrastructure issues, weather issues, if any, and options. expected admissions and discharges with Unit Managers, Nursing Directors, Emergency Department Director, Social Work, Case Management, Environmental Services Director, and Logistics for transports.  After the meeting, return to my desk and continue to assess and reassess outside and clinic admissions, discharges, any new issues that may develop.

I was so excited to start this job. What I was told in my interview was completely different than what I did. I am a social worker with years of experience in various settings. All I did here was discharge planning. I was told that I would be doing more clinical work. I made sure patients were discharged to a nursing home or set up with home PT. No social work skills are needed for that. If they have a drug problem we just referred to thrive. Mental health problems went to Psychiatry. I have a masters degree and this job can be done with an associates. I felt like I wasn’t using my degree to its highest potential. Most of the social workers there don’t understand as they have only done this type of work. I wasn’t feeling Fulfilled. I was also told at my interview that CEU’s are always available. They do an hour lunch CEU training ever month or so. That is only one credit and will take forever to get all the CEU’s needed for your license. Every SW there does CEU’s outside of work that they pay for it. 

The environment was awful! Two girls that have been there for a decade rule the department, which is not good. They talk about people constantly, but aren’t willing to help. They make it miserable for people. A few people left because of them. Nothing is done about their behavior. The other SW join in with them creating a hostile work environment. 

Overall, I would not recommend. This place has changed who I am as a person. If you want to do actual SW and not
work in an extremely hostile environment look elsewhere. 

Being A Referral office liaison, your in the middle of the terrible messaging system metro has for their patients. Patients will rarely be able to talk to their Drs and you’re the one who has to tell them why. Patient can never call their Doctors directly. They will always have to leave a message via a rep (you) or MyChart. Most older patients will just call a rep. I’ve talked to patient who were dealing With life threatening conditions and had legitimate concerns that needed their doctors attention but they’d have to leave a message for the dr. We would send the messages and IF the doctor would call them back they may have to leave a message on the patients voicemail. If that happened, instead of leaving their direct number on the voicemail, they would leave the hospital main number and get us reps again. We’re not allowed to connect to the drs office. So when the patient calls back, you have to tell them that they can’t talk to the drs office now and have to leave another message. Daily there are cases of patients calling a drs offices for weeks on end and never getting in contact with the dr. Cancer patients, expecting moms, mental patients who needs new meds prescriptions... all of them left waiting. And they’re screaming or crying at you.  And you can’t do much... but send another message.

As supervisor you will work around fifty hours each week. The amount of work you have to do will far exceed the time you have to do it. It is a hard, challenging, fast paced environment. Upper management and the director offer very little support to those they manage. There is a lot of talk with very little follow through. Directives change weekly with little reason behind the changes. In the course of a year my schedule changed four times. Also during that year EVS lost two managers, five supervisors and countless staff. The turnover rate is staggering and the department refuses to hire enough to fill vacancies. The department is a mess. I met some of the hardest working people and it was very sad to see the morale continually drop through the year. Upper management forces supervisors to write up staff over every small thing which is soul crushing. There is a heavy first shift bias as well. It is the golden shift that can do no wrong while off shifts are left to clean up messes and take most of the blame. The hardest part of the job is meeting management expectations with very little staff and no support. The most enjoyable thing I found was the people. It was a truly diverse environment with many likable hard working characters.

Well management believes that they are truly serving the community, they do little more than pay lip service and say the right buzz words to the masses. 
This company is years behind current best practice and has shown little/no effort in moving the needle. Change is Healthy is truly only a catchy slogan. 
Staff continues to request fair and appropriate recognition only to be rewarded with more pizza or another t-shirt. Maybe an ice cream cart if they are feeling extra spicy.  Management on all levels is so profoundly disconnected and refuses to actually be self analytical or actually open to feedback the stressors that he staff feels to even consider that they are the problem. 
 Staff is constantly told that the “total compensation package” makes it comparable to working at any other hospital in Cleveland, as if we don’t all know multiple people at the other companies to compare. 
The amount of waste that occurs here is staggering! Multiple projects needing redone multiple times to the cost of over $20 million dollars over just the last 2 years. The newest building went to the cheapest bidder, 2 years in, it shows. 

There was no flexibility or regard for the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of employees in the department in which I worked. Unpaid bereavement is not allowed. If there is a death in the family and you have vacation time, your vacation time is used for bereavement, and you must forego your vacation. Employees are required to punch in a code when away from their workstations for any reason, including going to the restroom. Raises are minimal to non-existent. Tuition reimbursement is available, but there is no room for advancement. Employees with disability placards were forced to drive past open parking spaces, and required to park their cars on any floor other than the floor with the sky walk. The rationale given was the "handicapped parking is for patients." In other words, employees were not considered patients when it came to parking for patients with disabilities. During inclement weather, it was rare that employees did not receive points for being tardy (no grace period). Employee safety was definitely not a priority.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The patients!
I worked for MetroHealth for the last six years.  
The direct leadership (director and supervisor) were not good at all being leaders.  Many of the staff in the department  I worked in (care coordination) were not very satisfied with direct leadership.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The direct leadership….director and supervisor/manager.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
MetroHealth hospital is excellent.  They take care of the poor/elderly and are multi-cultural and diversified.  The vast majority of physicians and nurse practitioners are easy to work with and very caring towards their patients.  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful due to micromanagement of director/supervisor/manager.  The outpatient department called care coordination was just focused on number of phone calls to patients Because that’s how they were reimbursed and not focused on quality.

Currently a RN at Metro and have been here almost 10 years.  You get as much out as you're willing to put in.  Staffing can get short (but no dings to Metro on this as I believe it's an industry-wide problem), normal census in Med-Surg is 4-1, now post COVID 5-1 average.  Most floor nurses are great, helpful when you need it, some voluntarily and all when you ask for help.  Some care partners are amazing and others not so much, with everything in between.  When you're known for your willingness to help, it's reciprocated.  And just like any other job, there are great and terrible employees.  The philosophy at Metro is amazing and centered on taking care of the community and equality for all and they live by it.  Management is pretty good overall, a lot of programs to support staff with plenty of opportunities for growth and advancement.  Tuition reimbursement as well!

Love customers, great customer service like to help the patients, good working co workers, nice environment everyone seems to like their job just coming to work everyday meeting new people job is different daily never know what to expect. The hardest part of the job was sometimes feeling you let the patients or family down even when you do your best which is always, sometimes I feel I wish I could have done more even with the satisfaction the patients and families feel just sometimes wanted to always follow up with the people and we could not make that happen all the time. Customers want to see the smile on your face and when you give your best they know it. Always do your best make the families and patients feel they are the only people you care about at that time when they need your attention, always remain helpful, learn as much about your job as your can to become familiar with who can help the patients when you can not do not assume but know what you are talking about.

Working at a level 1 trauma center has really brought the word "teamwork" close to my heart. Dealing with the most gruesome traumas in Cleveland it takes a team that is willing to communicate effectively, work efficiently, and together help people survive and live their lives to the fullest potential. Working on the Plastic team has not only helped secure what I want to do in the future, but has allowed me to gain the confidence I would need in any job. Plastic surgery at MetroHealth is not only cosmetic, but reconstructive. Allowing those who were hurt very badly regain function in a loss limb, or someone who was burned have a nose again. A typical day at MetroHealth, in the Operating Room, runs nearly 60 cases of surgery a day not including the Emergency Traumas that come up very quickly and unplanned. I have a positive working relationship with almost everyone on my floor. I am a mother, a nurse and a grad student. I am dedicated, hardworking, determined and an excellent time manager.
