The University of Texas at Tyler

The interview process was overly long for a low ranking position. Had two interviews and a lot of the same questions, and I was later informed that I was the only qualified candidate. After being hired I had to learn basic procedural rules and steps by asking, the training that took place was completely lacking. The former employees in the role had recorded almost no information pertaining to the job, and the same seems to hold true for other positions on campus. As with any state entity there are a lot of rules and procedures, especially for purchasing, which are unfortunately not explained anywhere and must be learned through practice. Very much a trial and error on-boarding. Inconsistent duties and responsibilities, seemingly none of which were my impression during the interviews. Seemingly frequent changes in administration bring unnecessary and expensive changes to management and procedures. A lot of new 'plans' rather than action. The university lacks proper guidance and identity, which will probably limit UT Tyler from becoming a dominant university in the area. Due to the population it will never compare to other universities in the UT system, but even so there is great potential with better leadership and management. Reorganization is needed, especially with the unusual merger with UT Health Science Center (not the same as UT Health East Texas). Overall top heavy with inadequate funding to even keep up with demands.

This job has taught me how to be a better customer service representative, process specific documentation, speak with Deans, Assistant Deans and Provosts and manage my time well.
I love going into work everyday because the managers and co-workers I work with are really great. They know what needs to be done, when to do it and how. I also am comfortable to go to my management when I need too.
The hardest part of this job is sometimes dealing with overwhelming amounts of documentation. Deadlines are crucial and one must be on top of their game when working at this institution in order to complete those documentation properly and consistently. 
The most enjoyable part of this job is helping out people. I truly enjoy hearing the excitement in people's voices when they have been accepted into our Graduate Program or when I have helped them out with the proper information.

I enjoyed aspects of my job as an academic advisor, like working to help students and having a great team to work among every day. However, the larger work culture created unrealistic expectations within the limited time and resources we were provided. If we had too much work to do and not enough time to do it, the response was often “well that’s your job” and many took work home with them every night to stay afloat. Very few of my superiors made me feel advocated for or supported. When issues were brought up, they fell on deaf ears, and many of our decision-makers that determined our job requirements had never held a similar position and didn’t fully understand all that we do day-to-day. This led to additional duties being “dumped” onto us with no regard for our well-being. Upward mobility within the institution was also difficult.

My job as a graduate teaching assistant consisted in lecturing, grading and tutoring. I have been a lead instructor and an assistant in the classroom. A typical day working in the mathematics department at The University of Texas Tyler, is mainly consisted in a combination of the tasks mentioned. About 30% of my job is collaborative as it requires to work with faculty or other graduate teacher assistants to better help students in their learning experience. As for the pace, it is mostly fair depending on the time of the semester or the topic taught and how the course organized. For example, faculty as graduate assistants are much busier during midterms and finals than any other time. 
I have learned quite a bit both as student and a graduate teaching assistant in the mathematics department at The University of Texas Tyler thanks to the faculty, my exposure to teaching and the management team.

Quiet and safe campus, you only need to worry about tornado alerts and occasional shooter warning which is always wrongly dialed. UTTyler gives you a very good chance of just studying your degree whole-heartedly located in the small city of Tyler there isn't really any distraction that I could think of.

If your looking for a much more livelier place don't go here. Also, there isn't much progressive on the area so don't bother looking for any interesting discussion about gender choice or gender equality. Folks think like there are still in Antebellum.

It was a student job that I loved, but I graduated and it doesn't pay enough to live on. In a typical day things were relaxed at times, hectic at others. My job was to help students who came in with technical issues regarding their assignments with the SAP program, manage grading, answer the lab phone, maintain logs, etc. During my time working here, I learned a great deal about teaching others and how to use and navigate the SAP database. I was happy with management. The hardest part of the job was dealing with the occasional disgruntled student that was beyond reason, but I handled those fine, too. I enjoyed the hours, though. It worked around my classes and helped bridge time.

I enjoy knowing policies and having a deeper understanding into everything UT Tyler. Working at the One-Stop has allowed me to also form deeper connections to students, parents and faculty and has been a good experience. 
The leadership here is good, they do at least 2 trainings a month as refreshers on information we should be up-to-date with. Coworkers are nice and the environment is welcoming. They are very accommodating.  Only thing I think that could really improve is the pay.

Nothing, it is too micromanaged and cliquey

The micromanaging and having to be overseen and reported what you do every second of the day

Micromanaging and cliquey, you better fit in for sure or they get rid of you

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Doing travel requests for 3 campuses and arranging travel, expense reports, and HR entering on Peoplesoft

Management seem to be selected based on how little they question authority. 
You will NOT be supported by anyone. Everyone will undercut you. Management allows students to go around faculty and complain and then they always take the student's side. There's no way to win if you actually want to be good at your job. 

The work placed was filled with High team spirit, goals were set at the beginning of the semester and we were able to execute them at the end.Everyday, i went to work with excitement at the thought of helping students who get stuck on  their SAP assignments, responding to emails and making the class materials better. I learnt more about SAP and how it is important to operations management in any industry.
