A lot of work is thrown onto your shoulders with no acknowledgement of your work. If you have any hidden disability that requires you to miss work they will treat you like you are incompetent/lazy/lying. They will belittle disabilities in public group chats the entire team can see. HR does nothing to resolve this. If you have a disability, they offer ADA disability coverage on a case-by-case basis per management's discretion rather than follow the documented instructions provided by a doctor for needed accommodations. After a YEAR of working there you are offered FMLA leave, if you can survive working there that long.

 It feels like they are actively trying to push you out if you have disabilities and offer little support in this regard. If your time away from work due to documented disabilities exceeds their company policy, they will take disciplinary action against you. All the while you are bending over backwards to compensate for short staffing that they do little to resolve and then blame staff for the lack of adequate patient care. Truly awful behavior from all avenues of management and HR, especially for a hospital that claims to prioritize the well being of their employees. 

This job has been the longest held job for me which says a lot. I am a free bird in the sense that I love variety, change, spice, and spontaneity. I float throughout 5 different outpatient locations and 2 inpatient locations and thrive on the irregularity of my schedule. However, I've come to the point where I need something different, new, and exciting for the sake of my own personal sanity. For the first year and a half, I never thought of this place as a job as the people were wonderful and the environment was positive. For the last 6 months, I haven't felt the same way: the turnover rate is ridiculous, the quality of people being hired in the department is decreasing, and the management cannot seem to get on their feet long enough to makes positive strides, and the leadership in various locations is slacking. This has been the hardest part of the job for the past several months along with a negative environment. I have learned a great deal from this job and do not wish to negate the positive push it has provided me in furthering my career; however, it is due time to find a bigger and better opportunity before resentment settles in.

The Medical Center has a great work environment.  My one complaint, and it is a big one, is that my department (patient support services) is paid the same the same amount as the people who clean the rooms, and do the billing, yet those employees never touch a patient, they are never in a position where they provide CPR and ahve a direct impact on whether a patient lives or dies.  The opportunity for advancement in our department is also clearly an issue even though it is clear that there are plenty of positions that need to be created.  and finally, this department provides the services of the EKG department 16 of the 24 hours of the day.  It makes me question why does the hospital need a EKG department.  They get a far cheaper bargain having us do it.  So that brings me back to not being paid enough, not having the room for advancement, and doing some jobs that I don't feel we should be doing.  That said, I feel the hospital is a great place to work and provides a multitude of opportunities for an individual looking to break into the healthcare field.

It was a great place with great people. The benefits were great, it had it's own cafe' on 2 floors, the work was quiet, I didn't get to talk to customers as much. 

I think the only issue was that I could not advance as quickly as I would've liked. I enjoyed being in health care, I really like to connect with people and patents, so ironically I may have run lower in patience for I was hoping for CNA: However, I found out I had to be stuck doing cleaning in Tramacide alone and was not aloud to say anything to any customer except alert them when coming in for a new bed sheet. 

It was a 7 floor hospital in a low populated area for it's size. It was still the biggest employer in the area.

 I had a lot of people come to show me different ways to hit regulations and that also made it confusing for people would come in every now and then and I had to follow their lead and most often alone, but trying to figure out my own methods at the same.

I typically worked 8:30 am - 5:30 pm but would flex my shift to either 8:00 -5:00 or 9:15 - 6:15 if someone else needed time off. 
I'm a real team player and extremely flexible with my time in order to accommodate co-workers. 
I loved working with our patients! As we got to know each other it was fun to be able to call them by name and recognize each other and get to know their likes and dislikes. To be able to visit about their families, pets, hobbies, etc. 
I was responsible for referrals, so I would always try to get the patient's external referrals scheduled while they were still in their appointment with our doctors so I could give them their appointment date and time when they checked out with our check out person. I felt like this made it easier for them to know when their specialist appointment was and if they needed to change it, they could call when they got home to reschedule.

There's so much that's great about the organization! A lot of the people are friendly and helpful. The cafeterias are open to the public, and serve great food to employees, patients and visitors. I think most of the employees really, truly care about the work we're doing to help patients and the community.

On the other hand, leadership is not present, and is not involved in the work that goes on daily. HR is bogged down with too much work to do, and getting an interview really requires you knowing someone that works there or being a true standout. There are a lot of positions that I feel don't get filled with the best candidate, but the person who interviews best. I think they miss out on a lot of great people because of it. There's a culture that is completely resistant to change, and a lot of that is directly related to the bargaining union.

UVMMC is truly an amazing organization to work for, with its excellent benefits, support of continuing learning, and commitment to patient centered care. The nursing to patient ratios are excellent. All of this cannot be fully appreciated until you experience work at another healthcare organization. I recall several staff leaving for other organizations and calling months later asking if they could return. I relocated out of state and now work at a for profit hospital, and often wish I could return to UVMMC. I have a better understanding now seeing healthcare systems in other states that UVMMC does its best for the patients, staff and community. I felt truly supported there in my nursing practice, career growth, and education. I miss the people and the organization's culture, and while I won't be returning to Vermont, I would recommend this organization to anyone.

A typical day at work involved taking care of patients and collecting vital signs. Patients were encouraged to walk around our units while we observed them and helped with any needs they may have had. I learned much from this experience, especially how to interact with difficult patients. Management was very responsive and helpful in dealing with issues such as scheduling and other workplace conflicts. The staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming to new technicians and nurses. The hardest part of the job was learning how to interact with disorganized and unpredictable patients. The best part of the job was watching a patient get better and knowing that you made a difference and facilitated their care.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When hiccups occur, such as our data breach that happened a couple of years ago. We reverted back to paper.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Excellent for the most part. There are some Mgrs. that don’t aren’t as kind as most and that is irritating but overall, it’s a very good environment & culture.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Assisting my Director and team of professionals with meeting schedules. I also assist others when they request someone to shadow in the operating room. Everyone is so friendly and kind so it makes my day bright!

I love my job at the hospital. I work anywhere from 40-60 hours a week sometimes. I have learned about all the different exams that we do here along with working closely with the Cardiology Dr.s and nurses.  My job is super busy from the time I get in to the time I leave. The hardest part of my job is when patients come in and they are extremely sick and it breaks my heart, because no one deserves to go through what some of these patients go through.  The most enjoyable part is when you see a patient that has been in for so many different things and then they recover from whatever was wrong with them.
