I'm not even sure where I want to begin with this review, but what I want everyone to take from this is BE VERY CAREFUL when you apply to the edge fitness clubs. They are going to make you every promise in the world, dangle carrots and money in front of your face and paint a picture perfect world in New Employee Training (NET) which is what had me fooled. During the two weeks of new employee training, the area directors and various general managers  along with the rest of corporate fill your head with what seems to be the best thoughts about money, promotions/room for growth and the edge culture which is all a lie. Don't allow them to brainwash you and fool you, the way they did me for almost two years. 

You'll see on here that it says $35,000 to $70,000 for a fitness manager and they REALLY  make $40,000 and the bonuses are only a guarantee if the club hits certain numbers and that's only the second pay check of every month. They will tell you a AGM can make between $40,000 and $60,000 but you'll see an average paycheck of $1,500 every two weeks. I was working 65-80 hours a week and was only seeing about $1,500 and when you work at edge, edge is your life. They expect you to live, sleep, eat, breath and worship edge. You will get pressured into working on your days off, doubles are almost expected and if you have a second job they'll make you choose one or the other or else they'll say "you're not all in edge unless you quit the other job." If you don't mind this then go ahead, but I was working 12:00pm-10:00pm and sometimes later and for certain events I worked 15 hour days and sometimes my normal shift plus overnight. 

Don't ever expect to get a thanks, as everything you do is expected and gratitude isn't something that GM's or those above them like to show. You are expected to be a robot, work like a slave and if you try to take a break or use your PTO (if your eligible) then that's a whole different scenario. I got in trouble various times when I didn't take my hour break (hour breaks are for management) and when I didn't use my PTO I was told several times to use it. However when I attempted to take breaks I was told that I wasn't allowed, was pressured to eat in 10 minutes and now I'm being told that after accumulating PTO (won't disclose how much) that I can't receive that which edge will give to me one way or anther. They also think it's okay to degrade and ridicule their employees, talk and treat them however they want and favoritism is a strong strong thing here to. I've never seen employees treated as harsh and bad as I have at the edge and i've seen what a lot go through on a daily basis and I can't believe that these people haven't take further actions. Don't bother talking to the area directors or corporate because they are all robotic to and don't care about anyone but the GM's and themselves. Corporate cares about the GM's and GM's don't care about there staff. I watched my staff get mistreated and be presented with awful working conditions and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. 

If you are applying for a GM, the starting hourly is $16/16.25 and I hope you are okay with loosing your life. You might as well say goodbye to your family, friends, significant others and be prepared to miss everything and anything that isn't edge. Don't let edge brainwash you the way it did me, and take this review for what its worth but it isn't just this location, they are all the same.

As a full-time, newbie trainer, my experience at The Edge Fitness Clubs was disappointing and far from what I expected. While I went into the role hoping to learn, grow, and help others, the reality didn’t match up.
First and foremost, there was no fitness manager during my time there, which meant any knowledge I gained came from the other trainers rather than from structured training or guidance. The company sells you on the idea that you’ll make great money if you put in the effort, but they fail to mention that trainers only take home 20% of the earnings, while the company keeps 80%.
Getting clients was incredibly challenging. Unless you were comfortable walking up to people mid-workout to pitch training—which goes against gym culture and feels intrusive—you were left with little opportunity to build a client base. Members don’t appreciate being approached like that, and having so many trainers available only devalues the role of a personal trainer in the eyes of the members.
On top of that, the job felt more like a sales role than a fitness position. We were expected to make endless calls and texts to the same short list of leads, competing with 7+ other trainers for the same people. New trainers receive no real help or training on how to sell themselves, yet are expected to hit sales and income targets right away. If I wanted to work in sales, I wouldn’t have invested in becoming a certified trainer.
To make matters worse, after a while of the club not hitting its goals, corporate would send in a team to “sweep” the gym. This was incredibly intimidating—they would watch staff members like hawks, staring at everything we were doing. They would also ask questions on the spot, expecting detailed answers. As a newbie, it was overwhelming and demoralizing, especially since we had little to no support or preparation for these situations.
The constant pressure to meet unattainable goals, lack of guidance, and intimidating corporate oversight created an environment where it was hard to succeed or feel valued. It’s no surprise there’s a high turnover rate among trainers. The company needs to focus on fixing its internal issues rather than placing all the responsibility and blame on the trainers.
If you’re considering working here, understand that this role is heavily sales-focused with minimal support for new trainers. It’s not the ideal place to start or grow a career in fitness.

Many employees, including fitness, sales, and assistant managers, have left in the past six-months because of the toxic work environment.

Management is aggressive, picks favorites, and will put best performing trainers on a pedestal. They will push supplement sales so hard, it's painfully clear they're trying to drain the money off client's as much as possible.

Team meetings are never fun. Coworkers are high-strung, ready for the next set of vulgarities our management will express towards our sales performance.

Clients were the only good reason I stayed any longer than I should have. Most affordable training sessions offer 30-minute workouts with a trainer which is not enough to warm-up and have a good workout. 

Management is toxic and unhappy, with no time to help you but all the time to delegate you with an iron fist. I have never heard so many customers and coworkers, in and out of the facility location, have problems with Cranston management.

You must post your own lunch breaks. If you do not do so, your calendar will be fully booked and you will *not* have a break for six to eight hours in what is probably the fasted paced-job you'll be grinding sales for.

Management won't help or follow through when you seek it. Managers are always late to fitness assessment handoffs, which are the defining part of the sale. Consultations provided by the sales team are no good as some consults think assessments are just "free-workouts" and only want to use the In-Body scale.

In addition, Cranston Edge is a location attracting a demographic that does not have the wealth to purchase the exorbitant fees of personal training, making floor pulls difficult to schedule assessments as the first thing members will tell you is they don't have enough money before you could even suggest a training plan.

This job is good for gaining experience after six months to a year. If you can beef up your resume with more certifications, gain and retain 15-20 clients, and provide an exceptional training experience, you will qualify for many jobs requiring customer service experience, even for a completely unrelated job. 

Do not be afraid to separate if you are treated unfairly.

I partially feel bad because management was so kind. However, upper management and corporate dragged this place down. Tons of miscommunication and people not knowing what was going on. Days are exhausting and it was ironic that I had no energy to workout at the gym, I just wanted to go home and rest. Corporate continually asked me multiple times about things I had already given the answer to, didn't know how to schedule my training and kept asking for what my schedule looked like so they could find a time slot to train me. I didn't even know what my schedule was half the time because they wouldn't post it, plus them always asking about when I was free to train was odd, because they literally had my schedule. The pay isn't great for the work you do, you are just paid a dollar more than Coaches on your team but the responsibilities you are given and things you have to do are far too demanding for just a dollar more. I was constantly bothered on days and slots where I wasn't even working to look at my email and answer texts. Got scheduled for a meeting when I didn't even get an invite or was notified about it.
Area Lead was uptight and tried to run everything like a clock even though it was a gym and not a retail store so not everything has to be picture perfect. Even got yelled at to buy black pants when I was basically out of money because that was apparently the dress code even though on my offer it said I could wear whatever I wanted for pants.
Employees at the front desk were kind and I formed some good relationships quickly but everyone on my team wasn't. Not sure if it was due to exhaustion or what but my team seemed to be very dismissive save for about one person. One was always on their phone when they were supposed to be watching the kids, the others were very standoffish and I never got to meet my other team member.

Not worth it. You are constantly exhausted and tired. I was only there for about a month and immediately went to go find another job as soon as I was able to so I could leave.

If you are just starting off on your training career Edge might be a decent spot to start. They will put people in front of you so you can practice speaking to training and see what the average client really cares about health wise. I think the ability to learn what progress truly looks like with putting clients on the Inbody scale is also a helpful tool when first learning how different training programs provide different measurable results. All helpful stuff when learning the ropes. 

But you should learn as fast as possible and leave because the culture is beyond toxic. The potential upside is so limited its laughable. And the management from the club to corporate level is horrendous. FILLED with false promises and shocking inability to effectively plan events. The same expectations they have for you they cant hold up themselves. 

Edge needs to get with the times and pay Trainers for the service they expect them to provide.  They give you a tiny fraction of what services actually cost, an small area to train with all other trainers, while providing you a software service that isn't even up to date with the current product.  An simple quality of life improvement would be an initial commission on clients brought in from the trainers themselves based on the packages bought. 

Its all about the bottom dollar at Edge. They will tell you to build YOUR business and act in YOUR own best interest. What that really means is bring Edge more money. The level of pay increase you receive verse provide for Edge is insanely skewed. When push comes to shove those clients always be redistributed or moved and Edge not lose a dime, which they will threaten you with given the chance. 

I currently work at The Edge as a trainer. This wasn’t my first training job and I don’t expect it to be my last. 

The reality of a commercial gym is that you have to find  most of your own clientele, sell supplements, and produce for the company. Simple enough. There are batting orders to get fed client opportunities based off of how good your company numbers are which isn’t fair for trainers who are looking to start a career somewhere and don’t have any experience.

Building a book up wasn’t hard but retaining clients is very difficult. Obviously this can be area dependent but training prices are expensive and most people end up canceling their training as soon as they buy so you recycle clients every 2-3 months while only retaining a small group. The set-up and package options are atrocious and basically force people to commit to a recurring service when just charging people for packs of sessions would make people feel less inclined to cancel because they’re scared of getting charged again.

Pay isn’t bad but read into it. Starting is low $30 an hour but if you’re on clock you make $16. They charge upwards of $80-$90 a session. You make $16 of that. You need to work A LOT of hours to even make it worth it.

The one thing keeping me here is the staff of trainers. It’s a very welcoming environment and the management does want us to make ends meet financially for the company but also works their tails off to give us opportunities. Quite literally the only thing keeping me here.

It’s a great place to learn selling yourself and gaining confidence in your abilities. However, it’s difficult to make money and it can be time-consuming to make it rewarding. Part-time is the way to go. You’d be better off opening your own LLC.

I worked at two different locations for the 2+ years I’ve been with the company. They were both pretty much the same as far as the environment. This is a decent job if you’re young or in school. Pretty flexible depending on the position. I worked more than one position and the front desk position is the most flexible. If you’re a trainer you’re better off being self employed, that department will drain you, however, the commission is great if you don’t mind working long hours for it. The environment is pretty high school & everyone knows each others’ business. If you don’t want something personal to spread throughout the gym keep it to yourself. Management & staff were pretty fickle and everyone played favorites. There are a few good managers I worked with, you might get lucky depending which club.  If you decide not to “drink the koolaid” & do what’s right it’ll feel like you’re walking on egg shells in some departments. It honestly kills the experience because it’s a really nice gym. You get to meet new people and this job is great if you’re outgoing. As far as growth, it honestly depends which environment you’re in. They’ll hire someone young with no experience, but also expect you to play a leadership role without the title or salary increase to show for it. It was a bit of a turnoff. Overall I did learn a lot in the roles I was working. Some experiences are great to add on your resume and move on. 

Ex personal trainer, company plays favorites with staff. They don't care about members, employees, or anyone numbers, numbers, numbers that's it. Yeah it's a business and my goals is to make as much as I can but their goal is suck as much as they can out of every member. Forced to sell overpriced supplements which can be purchased elsewhere for a lot less with some brands with equal quality like the ones I use. 2lbs of whey protein for $53 dollars got to be kidding me. Amino's for 60, that's nuts. To low calorie MR for high price. I sold them to my clients but felt guilty knowing I could recommend cheaper products.  I'm surprised I lasted 5+ years at this place. I never went back to the club due to Covid after the shut down as I lost a majority of clients.  

The turn over before Covid was incredible, they hire stupid people and then turn around and fire them relative quickly. In sales which we depend on to make appointments they hire anyone with a pulse who couldn't even sell a fire extinguisher to someone who's house was on fire and they have no good system to train these people, trainers, membership services we are all sales people got to have people who know how to sell but you get what pay for at minimum wage.  Also high cost benefits for family too much cost sharing by employees so if the benefits are important to you plan to pay big. 







Working for this company has completely changed in the last few months. If you had asked the employees just 6 months ago, we all loved our jobs. Loved the atmosphere, loved helping members, loved our coworkers, the whole deal. But something shifted, and almost every coworker I talk to now wants to quit. The culture is completely changed. Now, we're all treated very poorly and are only worth a number. For instance, as personal trainers, we are completely useless unless we are bringing in new clients, even if that means ignoring our current clients' needs. It will come as a big shock to management when we lose all of our current clients because we are straight up told to ignore them as they "aren't a priority", as it's not as important as bothering current members with phone calls to try and get them in for a fitness assessment (most of whom want nothing to do with it). While I love the actual job of training my clients and teaching group classes, I do not understand how my non-training time is only productive as a call robot instead of trying to help my current clients when they come to me with questions. Unless you enjoy being degraded, talked down to, and treated like a robot by management, I wouldn't recommend working as a personal trainer for this company, or at least specifically at the Washington Township location.

The Edge Fitness Clubs is one of the most enjoyable places to work and be a member. Why? The staff and members create a culture that can lift someone up when they're not feeling so hot! I find the company to be innovative, very open minded, and that it stays true to it's primary purpose, and with that being said I believe that anyone can become apart of at here and call it home. With the gym industry have its new trends and its moments of change in perspective I've always felt that the people of the Edge Fitness Clubs have been welcomed to change and continuing to build new strategies to help people find what they need to sustain a healthy life style. I also believe that working for The Edge Fitness Clubs has helped me understand the people of today. Most importantly not judge them for putting there guards up and coming to us with the stereo typical opinions that surround the Gym industry today. The Edge has helped me guide others with out expectation and I found that doing what's right for the customer may not always be easy however i'm consistently reminded that our help may save them from themselves. It's hard to reach others that may not be comfortable enough yet to be vulnerable but the Edge Fitness Clubs has helped me keep my hands open to whomever wants the help.
