Third Federal Savings & Loan

The title is a quote from CEO Marc Stefanski. It very much sums up the nature of the company. Third Fed is considered, thoughtful, and risk-averse, which is a rarity in the banking world. It also makes them a foundational place that doesn't seem like it'll ever go anywhere. This is actually a company that lives up to its tag line (Strong, Stable, Safe)

Retail (branch) associates don't have sales goals or commissions. Back office associates don't have work quotas.

TFS is a very management-driven company, though input from the 'lower rungs' is often considered and acted upon. 

Upper management very much believes in, and lives TFS's values system. The second-most senior person in the company came over to say goodbye and give a hug to one of our summer college students. Middle management can sometimes use a refresher.

The company has many long term people (something like 15% is made up of people with 25+ years) so advancement can be a challenge. The people here tend to stay in their jobs for a long time, and the company doesn't frequently expand the workforce, so if you're in a job that you're not terribly fond of, it can be difficult to find another department to transfer to.

That said, the work environment itself typically isn't incredibly stressful. When you go home, you go home; work doesn't follow. Managers actually leave the office on time. The call center is 9-5. Nothing crazy goes on here.

Base compensation needs some upward mobility, but raises and bonuses happen twice a year, and there are some other perks to offset the generally meh pay.

The company turned 80 this year (2018) and has never had a layoff, and has made the Bauer 5-star rating something like 25 years consecutively.

If you're younger (I'm 35 at the time of this review), come here knowing that TFS is a great place to work, but that advancement chances are generally fewer and further between than they may be at other places.

If you're older, come here with the confidence that your work environment is pretty calm, and incredibly stable. A+ if you're looking for a place to retire from.

It was a normal slow paste day at work.The things that I have learned at Third Federal savings and loans was how to work with different kinds of people and personalitties. i've also learned how to communicate more with people and to not be afraid to ask for help when needed. Working at a bank like Third Federal was actually pretty easy. I had some simple task to do each day I came in for work and I also was able to finish each task and move on to something that was more of a challenge for me. My manager was very nice, she was very communtative, and always had a big smile on her face. The hardest part of my job was havinf to make sure I got each task done before it was due. Another hard part of my job was trying to maintain time, basically trying not to take too long on one task, if so I move on to the next task then go back to the previous task that wasn't complete. The most enjoyabl part of the job was being able to connect with my co-workers, and being able to celebrate with them.

Extremely extrovert-centric culture which makes it difficult for introverts.  All business decisions are made by committee and has lead to a serious Group Think issue.  Dissenting opinions are frowned upon so there is no real collaboration and optimal decisions are never arrived at.  Managers are moved from department to department based on their desires without having the necessary experience/knowledge of the department.  This is great for those individuals career growth but at the expense of employees and the firm.  

Pay is very low compare to the industry.  They want to wear many hats but not pay.  Training is no good or non existence.  Management doesn’t do a good job of promoting their associates.  Benefits are ok but not worth staying because of the low pay.  Family owed so could be a bad thing because the owners’ kids, nieces, or nephews etc can come out and say they are interested in working  for the company and get promoted to positions before  people that worked very hard over the years and are better candidates for the position but since they want to keep it in the family they give their family members better opportunities than their own associates.  Very little opportunities if you live in Florida

Love, Trust, Respect, Commitment to Excellence & a little bit of fun! These are the core values of this company. I would highly recommend this company to anyone asking. Mr. Stefanski has really made this company into a role model as well as set the standard for any other banking company. He not only runs business well but he cares about the community and all of the associates that work for him. I really loved working for this company and the only reason I left was b/c I moved back home to NC. They are only located in OH & FL :( Miss the company terribly and I have yet to work for another company that surpasses the values and experiences I've learned and had here.

Easy job. The bank offers the best primary mortgage rates and products.

Lack of personal promotional opportunities 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Fun and Family oriented. You are a universal associate in Florida meaning you do multiple jobs. We have retail branches in Ohio and Florida. No goals however the opportunities to to grow are limited 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start at 8:30am open brach office. Check emails,  call leads 
Help process banking transactions, work my loan pipeline. Take at least 2 loan application a day

Third Federal is the best company I have ever worked for.  They strive to give the work/home balance I have ever seen in a company. Their pay is competitive, their benefits are the best I have ever received.  It definitely could be stressful at times, but since they are such a great company, it was more tolerable than any other place I have ever worked.  I would recommend working here and if I didn't have to relocate, I would still be there for the foreseeable future.  Third Federal really cares about your success professionally and personally.  I have never felt more appreciated at place I have worked.

The company culture of love, trust, respect & commitment to excellence are truly a part of the daily life and culture here. Everyone from the CEO down in management live up to this mantra and it’ reverberates down through the staff.

Everyone is a big family at TFS and is treated with respect and kindness. It’s a rarity to find this type of culture in banking. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very busy but rewarding as management goes out of their way to make all employees feel like family

Company has a very quirky work environment. Management lacks real world banking experience and they only act like a bank when they are sanctioned as they were in 2009.  Would not recommend this company to anyone with aspirations of growth or looking to make a salary that is competitive. Their focus is not on actual job performance and is more on tardiness. Treats college grads and experienced bankers horribly compared to uneducated staff that are considered lifers.

Overall the company is a great organization to work for and they treat their associates well. The biggest downfall is that I prefer to stay busy on a more regular basis as well as be challenged. Depending on your direct manager is the key to advancement and if you do not have a manager that helps you it becomes difficult to advance. Pay increases are also minimal even when you do advance rather than the raise be based on your performance it is a flat percent across the board.
