Tri County Care.

I received multiple warnings from friends employed at the company not to apply for the job, as they believed it wasn't worth the stress and pressure. Online reviews further confirmed these concerns, but I thought my prior experience in a fast-paced environment would help me adapt quickly. I was completely mistaken. Here's my breakdown of the experience:

Caseload: Initially, you handle a manageable number of cases that gradually increase over time. Depending on your member’s tier (ranging from 1 to 4), your caseload can reach up to 40 members. Having more Tier 4 members doesn't necessarily mean a lighter caseload; it often implies more work with these higher-tier members. Regardless of your caseload specifics, expect a consistently high-stress level. Management's expectations are frequently unrealistic, and they push you to accomplish an excessive workload.

Management: Although Care Managers have voiced numerous complaints, management pays little attention to them. Upper management occasionally joins team meetings to sugarcoat issues and gaslight Care Managers. Long-standing issues like excessive pressure, a lack of work-life balance, disrespect from Care Manager supervisors, and miscommunication regarding company expectations have been reported for years with no apparent intent to address them. It's worth noting that this company occupies a niche role in the NYS healthcare field, which might explain the lack of motivation to improve.

Work-Life Balance: Many of my colleagues have shared similar experiences of deteriorating mental health, high blood pressure, and other health problems resulting from this job. These health concerns can be directly attributed to the unrealistic demands placed on Care Managers. For example, my colleagues and I often found ourselves working overtime because eight hours simply weren't enough to complete our tasks. When we requested overtime pay, it was frequently denied, leaving us with no choice but to work extra hours without compensation. As bizarre as it may sound, this option was still more appealing than having your supervisor shout out at you the next morning for having a Life Plan completed.

PTO: Please consider using your PTO before leaving the job, I have heard of many instances where people who have worked there for 4+ years were denied their PTO payout when they decided to leave the company. I know of at least 4 CMs who were denied their PTO payout despite giving 3 to 4 weeks' notice.

Turnover: The company has a huge turnover rate. I started with about 8 people in training, and within 4 four months, there were only two left, myself included in the 2.

I was very excited to work here when I interviewed, their mission aligned with what I’d envisioned doing in human services, I didn’t know how big of maze it’s the opwdd umbrella., at first everything was nice, training were regular thing before getting my caseload assigned, when I started getting clients it was fine but as my clients started to display a wide range of service needs such as housing, home care, baby sitting, entitlements etc my job simply became excruciating, the training department abandons you, supervisor gets reassigned I expectedly. Supervisor do share resources here and there but it’s not enough, client will become angry at you for waiting for services that’s out of your control as you submitted everything that needed to be submitted, this same clients will give you deadlines for services and hold
You accountable if you don’t meet their made-up deadline, supervisors will accuse you of “not doing your job” if a client complaints and offer to help you based on covering for themselves rather than assisting you with he particular need, as per my particular experience this job feels like drowning on turbulent waters on a daily basics, must of the time is spent trying to achieve the endless list of documentation compliance leaving you clueless, helpless and hopeless on how to deal with the many services, need of the client/caregiver that’s calling you everyday demanding their housing, entitlement, home care, waiver services, specialty therapy among many other things that you’re expected to help them with! Very emphatic with the population needs, but sometimes many clients and higher ups, have very unrealistic expectations and do not care. When I left, tri county care  makes it impossible to get any accrues vacation paid out, I have the proverbial two weeks, they’d denied paying Mt accrued time. They will have you in the field doing home visits for absolutely any reason, clients are spread out across boroughs and considering how unsafe it is everywhere, this job it’s not worth all the potentially perilous situation you might encounter, you’ll literally sleep and have nightmares about work from all the stress 

Working at Tri County Care remotely during COVID 19 as a new employee has been THE WORST experience I've ever had on a job:

Supervision:  Doesn't matter if your supervisor is nice; they carry caseloads and have no time for staff.  They dump caseloads on you leaving you to deal with families who are complaining that they haven't received services yet.

Staff:  Because you're working remotely there's no staff to talk to which makes things even harder.  Your supervisor has no time for you, and the next best thing would be to ask a coworker for assistance, but when no rapport has been built (because you never established a relationship due to working from home) you're on your own.

Caseloads:  Everyone has double the caseload b/c there's no staff.  Plans and assessments haven't been done by previous care managers and the new care managers are left to "clean up" putting you behind on your work from day one.  There's no real way to catch up, it's a continuous cycle.  Families are upset because services are taking too long to begin, but, if staff are not provided with the tools they need to do services (i.e. CHOICES) how can we be expected to provide them? 

Equipment:  You're given a laptop and a desk phone.  No access to CHOICES which is the biggest problem.  For whatever reason, it takes an ETERNITY to get your own account. You have to go to your supervisor and continually ask for documents and info from CHOICES.

Training:  You're provided with plenty of training but not the real trainings you need for your everyday job.  No training regarding the waiver process, brokers, etc.  

Pay:  Pay is great, also having free insurance is a great perk as well.

Time Off:  The company provides plenty of vacations and holiday pay.  You even get your birthday off as a paid holiday which is great also.

My overall experience  here has been so disappointing.  I was really excited to work with this new agency but the lack of organization and support has made me begin to search for jobs elsewhere.  

The day to day work load grows every day and management expects the workers to finish the regular work plus all the audits and projects they come up with, within the same 8-hour work day. They tell workers that they MUST punch out after 8-hour work day because they will not pay overtime. However, if you work overtime because of the work load, supervisors change the time sheets so it will not exceed 40-hours per week. This is illegal. 
The work environment is very stressful. Regional directors are very competitive so if the company says you have 5 days to complete a task, a regional director can decide that he wants it done in 3 days so he can be the "first" to be done with the task. Company only gives a raise after a year and it comes out to $0.77 per hour! Pathetic. The company cares more about billing than the clients and they demand you call every client on your case load the first week of every month so they can bill for it, even if the families don't want to be contacted. 
The job requirements are different among supervisors and everyone gets a different pay per hour. HR is useless and doesn't care about quality employees. They will work you to death until they will wear you out and when you can't take the pressure anymore and leave, they will find someone else. This is just another agency that wants to pay the least amount of money and suck the life out of you.

Being a Case Manager is pretty difficult, especially dealing with the client's issues with limited resources. I had about two supervisors during my time in the company. Both supervisors worked very differently and one was more experienced than the other.  You will receive transfer cases and still be expected to provide services and case notes within 24-48 Hours. It is expected that you write one billable service note for every single client, which consist of contacting the clients. You were not allowed to text clients, only phone call with the approved office phone. Your caseload will be about of 35-40 clients, which are already angry with you since turnover for case managers is so high at the company. The intake/enrollment process is done but falls on the case manager to complete by uploading documents. Proper training was not received by the trainer, clients always wanted more hours to be approved and supervisors could not train their staff members. Management only cares that DDP2's and Life Plan's are completed, they didn't seem to care if the client's actual issues were resolved. I considered myself a strong case manager who has over 5 years of experience and I couldn't handle the workload. Apply at your own risk. 

This company is terrible. the best thing they have going for themselves is that they offer free healthcare. They make deadlines shorter and shorter while giving you new projects. The only thing they care about is billing and paperwork to avoid being audited. They will write you up if you get overtime and have managers change your time sheet if you get overtime to reflect 40 hours. Meanwhile you're expected to work off the clock which 90% of the offices do just to keep up with the overwhelming workload. This is beyond illegal. The owner even thanked us for working off the clock at one of the conferences. You don't have time to call your clients because you're too busy doing the work they keep making up just to dump on you. Meanwhile, it's supposed to be "person centered". You're expected to have 2 billable notes per client by the first week of every month. The managers and regional directors micro manage everyone and give everyone unnecessary anxiety and stress. Everyone feels overworked but don't want to speak up. 

At first glance, everything seemed like a “regular job” with a caseload. As months went on , I became more aware that the company is very focused on making money and deadlines. Between being pressured to have all 30-35 cases called each month, you will also get randomly audited and reminded about all the compliance and documentation that strictly needs to be according to their SOP. It is nearly impossible to do all of this in the month, not even counting face to face visits thatcan be located in multiple boroughs.  These locations , homes, apartments, are in the most dangerous neighborhoods which can put anyone can risk. There is no buddy system , and you are in your own. I felt sick everyday I had to clock into work . I couldn’t sleep. It affected my personal life. And to this day I feel like I have an obligation to serve 35 families with multiple service needs in addition to deadlines. I do not recommend this job for even the strongest person. 

My hours are full time, but there is a lot of unpredictability at this job. I had a few months of barely any cases, I lived in fear for my job during that time. I then got cases and it's a lot of work to keep up with them. I can have days where I work the normal 9-5, 9-8:30, 9-2 based on the demands of my caseload. The kids are in school, parents work adults go to dayhab, so the meetings are mostly in the evening . That may be field specific, but it's not fair to me that I can't make the family meet me during the day at least for 1 visit a year due to person centered rules. I don't have kids, there are people with their own kids who manage to do this. It is a remote job, but they are trying to make us to to the office. There is a lot of gaslighting. My family told me to go look for a new job that's less stressful.

I started as a care manager earlier this year and enjoy the WFH capabilities. The public health emergency is now ending so OPWDD is requiring Face-to-face meetings take place in person and no longer virtually. This would not be too big of a deal except the caseload given is unrealistic and way too large. There is not enough time in the day to even be close to completing necessary tasks let alone make time to call your families. I feel immense stress and pressure daily. I am still relatively new (hired in January) but already have 20 cases and will be expected to have 30 cases at least. I feel I do not have the knowledge yet to complete many tasks being asked of me and send 30 emails to my supervisor daily asking how to do things. The pay was initially very nice and benefits cannot be beat, but now with the position requiring more in person as well as the growing caseload, I am not sure how I will manage. 

As a parent of a child with a developmental disability, I would have never thought I would be strong enough to change my career and become a Care Manager. Working at Tri County allowed me not only to be more educated and informed about services I can get for my own child but simultaneously to be able to help many families with needed programs and services.  It is satisfying knowing that the individuals we service have all the assistance they need in order to be productive and successful members of society. 
I am honored to be a part of a company and an amazing team, who value me as a worker and treat me with respect and dignity. Even in times of hardship, Tri County was accommodating to my requests as an employee and I feel that my work is appreciated and compensated well.
Like at any other job some projects might be overwhelming, but at the end the positive outcomes and appreciation from families and administration make the job rewarding.
