I had a very mixed experience working at Johnson County Oral Surgery.

When I first started, the environment felt supportive and welcoming. The training period was not structured enough to the point where I went from being trained by the lead, to one if the new employees to an employee who id be working with directly. It was so unstructured to the point I had gotten frustrated, but on the upside I felt encouraged, and I genuinely enjoyed my role and the patients. For a while, it truly felt like a place where I could grow, learn, and build long-term skills.

Unfortunately, my experience changed significantly during my final 30 days.

Communication became inconsistent, expectations shifted without clear discussion, and I felt that small issues were handled in a punitive and discouraging way rather than through coaching or constructive feedback. I was ultimately terminated over matters that felt minor and could have been easily addressed through conversation and guidance.

What made this especially disappointing is that, up until that point, I had been performing well and was committed to the role. The sudden shift in how I was treated and the lack of transparency around concerns made the ending feel abrupt and unnecessary.

There are good people here and the clinical work itself is valuable experience. However, I believe the management approach and communication practices need improvement, especially when it comes to supporting and retaining employees who are genuinely trying to grow in their roles.

Overall, this can be a good learning environment especially if you’re new to the oral surgery field, but it may not be the most stable or supportive workplace for someone seeking long-term growth and consistency.

A typical day at work: 
No lunch break. Don't talk or laugh out of fear of appearing like you are not working and will get in trouble via email.
What you believe you learned: 
Learned technical skills but was treated like an poorly the entire process. I learned life is too short, not worth being unhappy for 40/hr a week. 
Management: 
Management is spread way too thin and not able to manage all responsibilities. Very concerned with company image and not concerned with employee retention and satisfaction. 
They will go above and beyond for referring office and other Providers but do not care about you as an employee.  
Gossiping and uncomfortable personal conversations, happen routinely.  
Encourage you to come to work sick.
Workplace culture: 
Be at work no matter what! 
They are never wrong and will not under and circumstance be questioned. Even when the question is a learning opportunity. Lack understanding of toxic/hostile work culture. 
Hardest part of the job: 
Reading the minds of doctors! Being trained by 10 people and expected to know everything with 2-3 weeks training!
Unrealistic expectations of how long each appointment takes.
The focus on money was nauseating! 
The most enjoyable part of the job: 
The patients were the only part of this job that was enjoyable. Advocating for them even though there would be consequences. 

we had 1 day of training when I started and the information given was way too much to intake on the 1st day it was all over the place. The next few weeks I was sat with one of the team leads to shadow and train with. These people to not want to train new employees so we are getting the bare minimum in training. Apparently there use to be a whole 90 day training program that everyone said was great but they got rid of it. How do you expect ppl to learn everything about a company and position in 2 weeks being sat with a person who does not even want to be training me and saying it really shouldn’t be their job to? When taking this to management I was told just do my work and I will learn as I go. That’s not how training is suppose to go people need to know the WHY behind things so that the pieces of the puzzle come together. Management is TERRIBLE. They will throw you under the bus. The VP is the worst she acts as if she cares and then throws you to the wolves. In the little time I was there i saw the most scandalous things happen, it will take a book to write it all. They pick and choose who the rules apply to based on if they like you personally or not. Do not work here.

This company would be decent if the representation was displayed better. There is no structure in the RCM department at all. None of the managers actually have an idea of their or the job duties of the other enployees. There is no consistency with any type of policies, seems to be just an experiment with no sense of direction. The department is ran as a high school instead of a place of business. There is no staff support from management. The employees that make an impact to the facilities are over worked and not valued. When a situation arises between employees, management does not try to find any solution to the problem but instead turn a blind eye and allow chaos and division in the department to happen. They will lie about the training, the knowledge and support of the managers are non existent.  This is NOT a place I would refer anyone that has a brain to work for. If you are a robot that only does they are told with no self thoughts of your own this could be the place for you. Mediocre is the best word to describe this company and what you should expect if you work there.

Turnover rate is so high. HR is a joke they don’t respond to you on time and if there is an issue they usually go against you. It wasn’t until I got a doctor involved that HR woke up and did something about it. Our managers have never dirtied their hands, if we are short staffed they won’t jump in to help but expect us to answer the phones because that’s money being lost. We get emails saying good job but every year have taken the little incentives we get away because it’s not in the budget anymore hence more money in their pocket. After the little bonus we have to meet a goal in order to even get it comes out to $400 after taxes for the year. You are better off working with a private practice. 

In the time I worked for this company I had 6 supervisors.  Only two were helpful.  Of course the one most helpful was promoted and after that the billing department went down hill.  Mgmt could not give clear direction and could never make up their minds on how they wanted things to run.  It was constant stress.  To reach out to HR for assistance was useless because they always turn the other cheek.  There are no promotions unless you are with the in crowd and have a degree or college.  The company definitely is top heavy with mgmt.  Raises are a joke and so is security for your well being.  You are just a number on the wall.  I would advise anyone who is thinking of applying to look elsewhere.

After working here for a year, I realize that this place is a waste of time. The management promises you a job filled with opportunities to grow your skills and career, but that couldn't be further from what I experienced. Despite meeting high expectations and satisfying demands that are borderline unreasonable, none of my efforts were ever noticed, much less rewarded. Promises made to me at the start were left unfulfilled, workloads increased, while my salary remained the same, and guidance was never provided. 

Their expectations are so high compared to the compensation and assistance. You are expected to do so much work in such little time. Training is almost non existent.  Management is ridiculous cause the Billing Manager was useless. She was never capable of answering a simple question. They don't appreciate their actual good employees. They have lost so many good people due to their lack of. This company started off good and quickly went south when it comes to work culture. If you are looking for a career this is not the place. There are so many other better companies out there. 

NTFOS used to be a good place to work, but not anymore. It is sad. It’s a circus there. High turnover, very poor management and NO leadership, management that does try their best are always overruled by the doctors, employees that whine and complain a lot, employees not trained properly but then when you try to help them they literally start to cry, staff favorites, staff that is nice to your face and tal bad behind your back. I could go on and on. RUN and run fast.
