This company’s growth strategy is to buy up other companies and offer the other company employees incentive bonuses to stay on with USI but BEWARE once the book of business is assimilated into USI book the mass LAY-OFFS begin. No matter what is said about increasing workloads and working harder or overtime the jobs cannot be saved. Entire departments are eliminated.  Many jobs are moved to USI corporate locations or worse yet even overseas to INDIA. The tech support for assistance with prior company software was very slow and not a priority even though the daily work was still being done in this software during the changeover to USI’s system. Many tech folks from old company were eliminated shortly after takeover. MICROMANAGING is the norm. Management is not knowledgeable of departmental work. FAVORITISM is rampant. NO FLEXIBILITY with schedule or work life balance if you have health issues or children. Most jobs do not offer work from home options. They offered no room for advancement. And once lay-offs began they didn’t even try to keep ANY employees by moving to other departments or offices. The HR department is very RUDE and uncaring and all contracts they send are purposely ambiguous.  VERY STRESSFUL ENVIRONMENT.  Production metrics changed constantly and more than doubled in first year and so did the complexity of the work assigned. Meetings are numerous. Much of the ongoing training is via phone calls or online meetings where technical issues/sound quality problems were common. On the positive side coworkers were wonderful! On average the salaries are good but that was simply because you kept the salary you had with your prior company.  But if you are looking for longevity or growth from this company you will be disappointed. Start to look elsewhere for employment if your company is purchased by them!

This company has the potential to be a really great company to work for. It has a really high turnover in the accounting service center and that is due to extremely poor, inconsistent training, management that cares more about friendship with each other than actually fostering business relationships with the employees. Management is extremely toxic and takes personal feelings out on the employees.  Your training here depends on the attitude of your supervisor and if they don’t care for you personally ie: if you aren’t friends outside of work then your training will be minimal. If you’re kind and respectful you may or maybe not get training. Management always back tracks on things said so date your note’s because things change constantly and they claim that wasn’t what was taught. It’s the blind leading the blind, mixed with bitter, miserable, misguided middle aged management. It will quickly go from being a great place to work from being a very toxic place to work at. It makes no difference if you reach out to management about the lack of communication or inconsistency in training. Management all hangs out together and openly discusses employees so nothing stays private or fair. If you complain management will take it personal and target you.  It would be a good place to work but management goes unchecked and will throw you under the bus to avoid accountability for them. You will always be wrong when it comes to management hence the extremely high turnover rate.  People don’t stay with the company long after experiencing the corporate culture from the inside. It’s not uncommon working for a short staffed team with new management less than a month. They need to have a corporate trainer, because your training will be based on how much management likes you. Good company extremely toxic management. They are better companies out there. 

After several years of consistent raises and winning rewards (top 20% of employees) 5 out of 6 years, suddenly advancement stopped and I was leapfrogged by coworkers with less experience (and skill) for promotion to Director. Eventually was promoted however compensation stagnated.

This sudden shift correlated with a change of manager to someone who did not understand the highly technical work I was doing and therefore had no basis to evaluate the quality of my performance. The new manager was also apparently unaware of the level of responsibility I had become accustomed to and it felt like I had been set back two years.

Without real insight into my performance, I was instead evaluated based on vibes by my manager’s manager, which my direct manager would agree with de facto as he is a ‘yes man.’ I had previously loved my job and had felt recognized and rewarded for my performance.

Additionally, during this time workload increased significantly and timelines were getting shorter and shorter, to which I responded by working 12+ hours per day, which again was unrecognized. There was frustration that I was unable to meet shortening deadlines despite my many attempts to explain that they were unrealistic for me and would have been simply unachievable for my peers. My judgments were disregarded even though my manager had absolutely no insight into the actual work involved with meeting these goals and did not seem interested in learning about the challenges I faced and the processes/systems I had designed and was refining to overcome them. Even if he had been interested, he would not have been able to understand as he lacked the baseline technical knowledge to do so.

Anyway, lots of great people but, in some cases, severely lacking management ability and understanding of direct reports’ actual work.

I work hard daily, 8am-4pm making calls, emails and visiting new leads at their offices to solicit meetings, its a grind, but I love meeting and serving clients and people, you must be an outgoing, detailed person to do this job but it is so rewarding to help others and make money for myself knowing I do a great service and great job for others.  I am learning daily about new solutions for my clients, and after 25 years selling insurance prior to USI, this place is just at a new level in solutions for clients, not like other brokers at all.  Management is open, available and supportive!  The culture is very open and inviting, people are very nice and supportive, they understand I am new and help me daily, its so refreshing to have help!  The hardest part of the job is the quick update of all the information and keeping up with the requirements, but its fine, I just dive in headfirst and make it happen.  I know the hard work with pay off on my paychecks and that drives me to keep going even on hard days, because around the corner are incredible days that make me so happy to be here working hard toward my future!   My most enjoyable part of the position is knowing deep down that I am bring something new and effective to my clients, versus just "placing insurance" like other brokers.  I love people and thats my favorite part, in the service of clients with REAL solutions for their businesses!

USI promotes they provide a lot of internal support for Account Management staff.  They do not.  They staff based on delivering "X" to clients, on the assumption that AM's will deliver "X" with support of "Y" and "Z."

But I'm reality AM's have to deliver A, B, C and X, and when support of Y and Z don't materialize, AM's have to do THAT work, too.

Their fundamental miscalculation of the workload AM's handle means that they are understaffed in the AM team by at least  20%.  AM's regularly work 12 hours a day, even during the slow season.  

AM's have resigned and been convinced to stay by agreeing to a reasonable workload and a promise to hire more support.  But that takes up to a year sometimes, and the transition is grueling because it sometimes takes six months to a year for your relief to arrive.  They are losing AM's faster than they can hire them, and when hired, the onboarding is TERRIBLE, so the new AM's are a drag, not a lift... If they don't wash out.  Part of the reason the onboarding is so terrible is that AM's are trained that USI deliver X, and there isn't enough institutional knowledge to train them on A, B and C.

But they won't staff-up to deliver A, B and C because that would upset the shareholders.  And they won't tell AM's not to deliver A, B and C because then USI would lose clients left and right.

Also, they prefer to give you a paltry bonus instead of raises, and that's in good years.  In bad years, small bonuses and still no raises.  No raises.  No merit raises, nor cost of living raises.  Be prepared to get left behind.

I have been working here for 2 1/2 years and I am still learning something new everyday. The training is little to none. They don't have a training program so you are stuck training with your supervisor, whose work load is already loaded. They expect you to hit unrealistic goals with the work load they have for you. The turn over rate is the worst I have ever seen in my life. As soon as people come, they are quitting due to the work load or lack of empathy from management. The pay is entirely too low for the amount of work you have to do. You only get 75 hours every 2 weeks and there is no overtime. They don't give you raises here either. 

They have supervisors and managers who are in charge who lack general people skills. They need basic training on how to interact with people. You cannot have a dislike for people and want to be over people leading them, and that's what is happening here. They have no clue how to speak to you in a respectful manner. I know 3 people who quit just from the way managers speak to them in the disrespectful manner they do. 

There is so much more I could say about this company but I will leave you with this. Please do your research before you accept an offer with this company. I would not refer this company to my family or friends, even if the DID NOT have a job, The pay is just not enough for the amount of work here. 

USI has been a positive experience overall, but what I find disconcerting is the lack of value this organization has for their employees. This company does not compensate commensurate to local cost of living, nor is it based on their experience. 

On the upside though, my supervisor has been such a positive mentor for me in helping gain the practical knowledge of the in-and-out basics of insurance (medical, dental, vision, life/disability, etc.). They also are one to really be there when you need them

The workplace here renders it difficult for any sense of upward mobility, with Management rescinding past promises made about compensation and no real sense of rewarding employees for their hard work.

When we had been working from home for 2 years, my department decided to require 100% mandatory in-person attendance, which made the majority of my team uncomfortable for a variety of reasons (personal preference, immunodeficient relatives/loved ones, environment). The lack of flexibility in regards to work options (Hybrid, Remote, In-person) makes it a work environment that is a little too traditional for my taste. 

All-in-all, it's a great starting point and am indebted to the people there who have helped me get to where I am now. Even if it's not something long-term, it still is a step in the right direction. 

I only have great things to say about USI and the EB Midwest team. Everyone has been so sincere and helpful during my training. From day one, I felt welcomed and supported, making my transition into the team seamless and comfortable.
I've always heard about the importance of work-life balance, but here at USI, they truly strive for a life-work balance. The focus is not just on professional excellence but also on ensuring that team members have fulfilling lives outside of work. This unique approach has made a significant positive impact on my well-being and job satisfaction.
The benefits offered by USI are top notch, providing peace of mind and security. The training programs are well-structured and thorough, equipping new team members with all the tools needed for success. What stands out the most is the unbelievable support from everyone—no matter the question or challenge, there is always someone ready to help. My advice for management is simple: keep doing what you're doing. The team you've put together is amazing, so whatever you're doing—keep doing it. Your efforts are truly making a difference.


Personal Lines Department. They boast great profit margins while paying employees entry level pay, they expect you to put out the work of 2 people while you work understaffed because they can't keep people or obtain new talent. A few pull their own weight while others do the bare necessities to get through the day, leaving more work for those that care about getting the job done. Personal Lines manager is great to work for but there's a price for it - manager isn't given tools needed to do the job well. There are a few that ruin the potential for a great workplace culture with constant drama, bad attitudes, and gossip while the manager turns a blind eye. The department is unorganized and customer service is seriously lacking and goes unchecked. If you're looking for job security, it isn't here. Clients are lost left and right due to business practice and poor customer service lead by unmotivated management. This company doesn't recognize your hard work unless you're in the Employee Benefits department (their money-making department).

The social environment is the only good part. This is only because HR tries really hard. Everything elsw is terrible. You get the basic training and thats about it. When you get new responsibilities, they rush your training causing a lot of holes in your knowledge and when you ask for help they just tell you what to do not teach you. A good chunk of the time the thing they tell you to do to fix your problem doesn't even full work. The management does get the departments' opinion and anything causing for responsibilities to get confusing and burdensome. They do not inform you how much they want you to work over time until you are already hired. They care too much about making quota to really think about new ways to make things more efficient which many of there systems ans processes are not. Meeting are rarely productive for over 10 minutes. The way they track your progress ignore a good chunk of your other responsibilities causing for a very scud look of your progress. And overall the job is more stress then it is worth.
