The culture has changed. I was a top producer and everything was great. Now I realize they have organizational structure issues. 

The leads they provide are very hard to convert. They’ve chosen to market USDA loans because they’re cheap to buy—- but anyone in this industry knows that USDA loans attract a certain demographic of people and 95% of the people who ask about this program have sub 600 scores and think they can buy a $150,000+ house with $1,000 in the bank. Management keeps defending this marketing because it’s cheap to buy these leads and these borrowers have “more indent”… but who cares if you can’t convert them?

Pouring through 15 leads just to find one who ~might~ qualify who ~might~ end up in contract within the next 6-12 months is terrible for the loan officer mentality. 

I know this is a tough market to be a LO in, but their goal is to become the #1 USDA lender in the country. If you want to work here in consumer direct, expect this to become your primary lead source. If you don’t want that, find somewhere else to work. 
They do have more than 90K of loans in their portfolio that you could potentially refi when rates are lower and pull future business from. But take it from me, in this interest rate market you seldom get business from the existing portfolio.

If you’re interested in retail, it might be a better fit for you. If you’re a seasoned retail LO, it would be easier for you. If you’re brand new retail LO trying to learn the business you’re definitely going to struggle and feel unsupported because training across the board is terrible. Perhaps becoming a loan officer assistant to a top producing retail LO first would be better for you to start. 

UHM services their loans which is a plus. I think from a customer perspective it’s a great option. UHM does a pretty good job at taking care of their customer. But from an employee standpoint, understand that you won’t feel the same way. 

After working for a larger lender who knows how to treat their employees, coming to UHM was a shock to say the least. They stated in their job listing as hybrid however they require you to be in office for the first 90 days then they decide if they’ll offer it still. I’ve heard they don’t give very many or any raises at all and then don’t compensate PTO to make up for it, they start you off with 10 days compared to a competing lender who gave 20 days to start off at a higher wage. The CEO openly said to get our s—t together and get back to the office if your within 30 miles on a company wide call and to make things even worse they base it off your zip code, not the property address. Within the first 4 days of fully back to office majority of the company came down with covid and/or flu causing many to use the very little PTO they have as they don’t offer sick days either. They expect us to come into office everyday but when the weathers not good enough to get to the office we have to work from home yet we cannot any other time. Our systems constantly have issues and customers always complaining and the worst part is I honestly agree with 75% of the complaints. The management does very little in terms of addressing issues in office as many people will constantly walk around and chit chat while we have over 10 clients on hold or they will be around one desk having a 25 minute convo, don’t get me wrong they are nice people but nothing at this company works how it should from the systems to CEO’s to employees themselves. If you are needing a source of income badly and don’t mind how you get treated behind the scenes then it can work out but the room for growth seems minimal

My typical day at work is very busy (which I enjoy). I start my day meeting with the loan officer I work for and setting an agenda. I have meetings throughout the day and communicate vigorously with the other partners. At Union Home, I learned that working in the mortgage world can be hectic but the culture of the company has made it very manageable. Even if I'm stressed, my team is able to help me figure out problems that I need assistance solving. I set a daily reminder on my computer to go to lunch because I might forget due to how engrossed in my work I am. I also love the fact that I have an office to myself. I enjoy peace and quiet when I'm focused and having my own space granted that concentration for myself. The hardest part of my job would be time management. The mortgage industry is booming and sometimes I feel like there are not enough hours in the day to finish all of my tasks. However, my Loan Officer is amazing and she encourages and motivates me to do my job correctly. The most enjoyable part of my job would be all the outlets for resources that I have available to me. I can now email all partners with my title to ask for help and typically get an answer instantly. There is always room for growth and advancement. I am not 3 months into my position with the company and I have already started training for another position on top of being a Loan Officer Assistant. This company is amazing and really does care about the Partners in the company. 

My job at UHM was stable, and work from home throughout my tenure there during the COVID-19 pandemic. That's about the long and the short of the true positives. My team was made up of good and decent people who did what was expected of them, which is great, but opportunities for advancement were dangled and talked about, then never materialized, while other, much more junior team members, would be advanced seemingly at random. In my year and a half there, there was NO pay increase whatsoever from my already low base pay. If I remember correctly, raises aren't even considered or discussed until six months after your first summer with the company. For me, having started in the autumn of a year, that was a wait of almost two years to even be considered for a modest raise. This gave me the impression that they hired many, many people for temporary roles, strung them along with happy talk of advancement and being valued "partners", then, the moment the market shifts in a negative direction, as it did this spring, many of those "partners" are swiftly and unceremoniously cut loose (in group calls! No one-on-one call to explain to these valued "partners" why they were being let go, just mass execution - rude, unprofessional, and a clear sign that their employees are merely cogs, there to perform a task until no longer needed).

All in all, it's a fine temporary job if it's the year 2020-2021, your spending is low because there's a pandemic happening and you aren't really going anywhere, and you're happy to have a stable paycheck and aggressively average health insurance. Otherwise: have some self-respect and ambition, and work elsewhere!

I have worked at 3 mortgage companies and UHM is by far the best one. There is so much support from everyone in the company. The goal is the same for everyone; get families into homes. There is no competition, everyone works together.

They have almost perfected the loan origination process. The systems and automations they have in place makes it so easy for us to do our jobs and do it correctly.  And if you have a question its so easy to get the answers. All the LOs (across the country not just in your office) are supper quick to share their knowledge. And if your not comfortable asking for help, UHM has an amazing online database with breakdowns and easy to understand training material. Not at a computer??? You can access this all on your phone. They make it so easy for us. 

As if that was not enough, some of the top producers coach other LOs to help them become top producers. They not only focus on your work life but every aspect of it, work life balance, money management, giving back. This company invests so much time and money into their employees. They want us to be the best version of ourselves. 

Last but not least, they work hard to help us retain our past clients. This is an easy process because they make the process so simple for our clients. My past and current client referrals have gone up a ton since switching to UHM. 

I have worked for many companies and Mortgage Companies especially are very high stress, high turnover, high complaint places to work where you fear hitting your targets or keeping your position everyday. Union Home Mortgage is the exception to the rule. This was the best COMPANY of any industry I have ever experienced.  I was with Union Home for about a year and would have made it my forever job if it wasn’t for personal family reasons that caused me to leave. They still did above and beyond to help me in exiting while offering the ability to come back anytime.Every employee feels important and secure in there position. There is more than enough opportunity to grow and they spare no expense to aloe sure employees have the leads and tools needed to succeed. There are contests and awards for not only hitting sales targets but for being great co-workers as well. This seems equally important to Union Home as marking money, they want there employees to be happy in the company and to grow with them. I honestly am not the type of person to write a review and have great regret that I had to leave Union Home for personal reasons. The manager of consumer direct JB was exceptional and a truest amazing person and manager. Anyone considering a career with Union Home please take it from me, make the leap it will be the best choice you ever made for yourself and your family.

I worked for UHM for about a year and a half. The pay was the lowest in the industry but I was getting reacclimated to the mortgage field so I was OK with that.   There was minimal overtime availability.   The jobs are heavily automated. I did meet some amazing people here but the good ones don't stay very long. The medical benefits had high deductibles and prescription co-pays. Raises were all but non-existent unless you moved to a different dept. If you were offered a raise you had to sign a non-compete agreement for a year to receive it. HR will deny this but it is TRUE.  Increase amounts were inconsequential. There was a firm boundary between management and employee with a cultish, leader worship, " 1984 Big Brother" vibe. There is a high value placed on conforming. Independent thinkers are not appreciated.  The remodeled buildings are beautiful with lots of natural light. Work spaces are tight, side by side, 1 drawer for desk storage. Work spaces are open and very loud as there is nothing to absorb sound.  If you are career and financially driven this probably is not the place for you. If you are a people pleaser that wants to work to get out of the house and has someone else providing your medical benefits you may be very happy here. 

This was my first job coming out of college, and I was appreciative of the opportunity to gain the experience working in a full-time environment.  Everyone I worked with was pleasant, and the training I received for my role was excellent.  However, the pay was abysmal compared to the rest of the mortgage industry, and the chances of a large raise based on merit are slim to none.  At times, I felt overworked and the slightly above minimum wage pay was poor compensation.  When I told UHM I had accepted an offer to work for another lender, they made me resign immediately, which I found to be a rather cold way to deal with an employee who had been with the company for almost 2yrs.  I advise working here long enough to gain some skills about the mortgage industry, & then finding another lender who will pay what you're worth.

At first, I really enjoyed my work. My team was great and I enjoyed what I did. After a while, that began to change. You would put so much time & pride into your work only to feel no appreciation at all. The stress and time put into your work was not worth the pay. 

I cared deeply for my job and would actually make myself sick if I thought I made a mistake which I am now realizing is NOT ok. Senior leadership only care for Loan Officers since they bring in the money but they forget that the rest of the company is there to SUPPORT those LOs. Leadership canceled a partner celebration due to the market/budget, which is fair, but still held an extravagant week long getaway at a grand resort for high producing loan officers - I get they are bringing in revenue but the rest of the company does support them and deserves the same acknowledgement as well.

Listen and respect all of your employees, not just the Loan Officers. Everyone I worked with was very loyal to the company and would do anything to help it grow, so give that same loyalty and respect back.

I worked at UHM for about 2 years. The internship and first year of my employment went well, but the last few months ended poorly. The job security is terrible. Not only is the mortgage industry volatile, but the company makes a lot of bad decisions and does not care about its employees.  

I worked from home most of my time there, which went well overall. However, once I went hybrid, that was when my experience working there started to completely change. I was treated with great respect until there needed to be another reduction in force. I got poorly treated and felt like I was being set up to fail, so I happily left the company.

I had no confidence in long-term employment. If you are young and do not have any other options, then this place could do for a short period of time to get experience only if the mortgage industry is doing well. They usually treat you nicely if you are an intern, but it is different if you go full-time. There is a lot of micromanagement. Some of the hours they forced you to work were pointless.
