I worked at the Administrative Office of the US Courts (AO) from October 1998 to June 2009. I had the opportunity to job-share and learn various jobs during my tenure at the AO. I learned from many of my co-workers and tried to always - when possible, give them a helping hand. One of the best things is the celebrations, whether it was a birthday, anniversary, promotion or holiday, it brought the office and department together even more. Being a government-based agency, the benefits were great. The hardest part of my job was a season that we called, "Law Clerk" season. It was busy, busy, busy. After awhile you get somewhat use to it being busy but it was still hard because we were asked Not to take vacations during the Law Clerk period. This sometimes caused problems because Law Clerk season was the best months to take a vacation for some.  I could foresee this agency expanding in a way that would only make the AO more productive, if the employees and management continue to work together.

The US Courts is fine for judges and executives. However for everyone else, you need to be on your toes. The court prides itself on being an 'at will' employer. This applies to both Bankruptcy and US District Court. The court  does not fuction like the executive Branch of the government. As an employee you could be let go anytime. Additionally, management has many layers, so it may be difficult if you like to think on your own.  The current management as of 2016 is heavily into micro managing. You have to sell every change you make on any system or machine to management even if there is a issue. Addtionally, all work on systems needs to be conducted after hours, so you will not be able make any system related modifcations during the day.  As a court employee in IT you will to work with many outside entities that provide centralized sevices.  The third party support layers increase the stress you will have to endure as an IT specialist.

First job in the morning was to check all the documents which were filed by attorneys for the case number ending in the number you were given (like the #5).  Then you contacted the attorneys if there was a problem with their filing.  We all got together in the mail room and opened and date-stamped the mail and distributed it to each case manager.  We entered all the documents into the computer that ended in our number.  We also rotated working at the intake counter and waiting on the public and attorneys who came in the office to file various documents.  We collected the fees for the various documents filed   We faxes various documents to various people.  Attended various office meetings and conferences.

Provides a wide range of administrative support services to the Associate Director and the Chief of Staff.
 	Scheduling and supporting meetings; reception duties.
 	Answering the main telephone line for the Department of Program Services and providing direct customer service or routing to other staff for action.
 	Updating the Chief of Staff’s calendar; organizing and maintaining electronic and paper office files.
 	Performing special projects/tasks as needed.
 	Preparing, proofing, and formatting correspondence (including email correspondence) and other documents in accordance with AO policies and procedures.
 	Use of various software to produce and modify documents.

There are some great people at the Administrative Office. Unfortunately the environment is oppressive, the management is very backwards. My experience was not good there. A very high turnover rate, unless you are in upper management. Not an environment where you are rewarded for good work, nor is it even noticed. A restrictive environment if you are really a mover or shaker.

Perform specialized assignments relating to typing, word processing of document
Preparing and editing management support documentation pertaining to finance
Responsible for compiling closure letters from financial disclosure reports
Answering all incoming calls and forwarding to the appropriate staff person
Uploading financial disclosure reports saved in separate word processing folders
Completed work and reviewed for accuracy and compliance with procedures

I have enjoyed working with the offenders and their families but the requirements and demands of the job are difficult if not impossible to accomplish within a 40 hour work week.  Job responsibilities and requirements have consistently increased. You will have to sacrifice your personal life/time with family, you will work many more than 40 hours per week without compensation (no paid overtime), and taking time off comes at a great cost.

Excellent part-time employment - Flexible 

Provide on-going Information Technology maintenance and support of the STARR coaches Resource Library to include: Maintain monthly usage reports, usage metrics to include all user activity. Develop and/or maintain additional metrics reports (i.e customized reports).  Maintain requests (registering users, resetting user passwords, troubleshooting users log-in and navigation issues, editing documents and course development.

While working at the AO, I was treated with professionalism from everyone I came in contact with, everyone greeted one another by their first name and was so excited to see each other.  I very much respect their mission and their value that represent the high standard of customer services as their priority. If I had the opportunity to finish my career where I would be more then happy and pack up my current workstation with the quickness.

I have been an employee of the Judiciary for over 20 yrs.  There was an adundance of growth & advancement opportunities prior to the current Administrative Director joining. Job positions are now down graded in many locations, both central & local offices over the past 8 yrs with minimal advancement opportunities within all departments. Team members are good people, majority of managers also, however it's become a more job duties, less advancement unfortunately.
