From the start, the orientation was very disorganized. I followed their “experienced” nurse practitioner for the in home visits to learn the process. She did not explain what the visit should include or the expectations, she minimally explained the charting system, and to top it off during the start of the second week of orientation the manager said he did not want to move forward with my employment because during my assessment of my geriatric patient with dementia I had too much lag time between assessment questions. I only had 2 patients that I completed the assessments during orientation, not enough to make such a judgment statement  and terminate someone. He wasnt even present for the assessments, all information came from the NP I shadowed that barely let her patients talk. In orientation, the required videos even stated to give the patients plenty enough time for answering their questions and addressing their concerns. Ive been an NP for eleven years, you need to give patients time to think and respond to make sure you address everything. There was a lot I wanted to say on my exit but I politely said thank you. As I was leaving the office, the manager asked for my work jacket that I just received from the company. So I literally had to take off my jacket in front of him to hand over the poor quality jacket, and departed outside in the dead of winter jacket-less and sans a job that I only had one weeks of training for because he felt that I wouldnt be a good fit long term because of the two interactions with patients that he wasnt even present for. During the two patient assessments that the training NP was present for she just played with the patients’ cats and gave no feedback or assistance about what all needed to be covered for their palliative care aspect. It was a blessing that they wrongfully terminated me because I couldnt work for a company that was so egotistical, hostile, and do not put patients first. I would Never recommend someone to work with Unity Hospice or anyone to use them for caring for their loved one! Worse job I ever had and shortest one too!  Deplorable excuse for a company and management. 

Typical days fluctuate. You never really knew what to expect as an RNCM. You could build your own schedule which was great, very flexible. Some days were your typical 8 hours and some were much longer. On call days would also fluctuate and change your schedule. We were required to work 7 on call days a month: 5 week days and 2 weekend days. Week days were 16 hrs on call and weekends were 24 hrs on call. It was very stressful working full days with the on call after. Felt like your brain never shut off. I dreaded any time my work phone would ring honestly. On call days could vary from no calls to working 18+ hrs at a time. 
 The hardest part was the charting for RNCM. Even with structured visit, I still could not get everything done and often was charting for several hours at home. They occasionally will give chart days when you’re behind, but those are few and far between. With the work time and chart time, I was often working 20-30 extra hrs a week despite being salary for 40hrs/week with no compensation for extra hours.
I did learn a lot and found the content very interesting, hospice is unlike any other nursing job. They do great with providing education.
Management was a hot mess. Never knew who would be in what position or who to answer to. We had a CEO that left but was still in office and it was unclear what her role was. Interim director was great but way too much in her work load. Management felt catty and it was very uncomfortable reporting to them or asking questions. Office culture was very different than ppl in the field.
Hardest parts were the insane hours, on call, lack of compensation, charting, and mental health struggles. IDG meetings were stressful because it was difficult to coordinate pt visits around the IDG meeting. Driving distance was not fun. Often was driving 2-4 hrs/day. Case loads were high. Staff was constantly turning over. Lots of things were promised and never delivered like company cars and territory. Management really didn’t support people in the field.
Most enjoyable parts were my coworkers in the field, and the work itself. Hospice itself isn’t bad, it’s just everything about that office. I’ve heard great things about the Chicago office but the Rochelle office felt messy and uncoordinated. 

I was there for 6 months initially - started off i loved my coworkers, work flow, training was thorough; i thought this was going to me last job; ill stay here for the next 20+years; obviously nope. 
If you have your higher ups/supervisor/Head RN telling you "Your doing an amazing job" or "This position is perfect for you, im soo glad your here" or "Great job! Patients love you, LSW complimented you!" - you would assume, oh i dunno job security? That your doing a good job? 
But no. Complete left field to be called into the skokie office and advised "temporarly not going to go back to Rush and we will stick you in the field to do house calls - lets see how the next 2-3 months go" When the entire 6 months all you recieved were compliments and bonuses about your work ethic, that you were a people person with patients at Rush etc. I was lied to at skokie, as there excuse was they "thought they needed a nurse in this clinical liason hospital position, when they dont" But hey - lets give your position to to one who doesnt want it, who told everyone she is leaving to florida - who left a month after i did. 

They left me forgotten and high and dry - no more follow ups, no more smiles, just forgotten.  False hope, wishful thinking i would go back to Rush. Where i established relationships with LSW other liasons etc. But nope. They dont care. 
They listened to their favorites in the main office(near chinatown), the ones who are professional behind kissers. The ones who smiled at your face when you pick up patient/referral packets and talk behind your back once you left

Above all. Im dissapointed. If i was told in the beginning to fix something, i would of adjusted. But i was blind sided 100%. I gave Rush/Cook county 110% every day - just to be treated like dirt. 

Thank you Unity. I learned about hospice/palliative care - but i will no go back to family owned companies ever again.

This was truly a wonderful company to work for. I was there as a volunteer from November 2015 - August 2016, then as an employee from August 2016 until July 2020. I truly loved my job, and truly enjoyed the people I worked with. This was genuinely an incredible place to work. The old administrator was a little rough, but we dealt with her. She was let go January 2020, and the work environment went from "manageable" to everyone being much lighter and happier in their work. The whole atmosphere in the office changed to a much more pleasant place to be (not that it wasn't before). An interim administrator took her place, and we went about business as usual. A new administrator was hired in June, and began full time in the office in July. Unfortunately, I think the company made a huge mistake in their choice of administrator. Her first day in the office was July 22, 2020, and we all enjoyed her company. We talked about it after the first couple days and said we really liked her and thought she was a good choice. Monday, July 27, 2020, she had a completely different attitude, and wasn't even the same person we had just met the prior week. She fired me on July 28, 2020, and while I was collecting my things, proceeded to make snide remarks. She showed her true colors that day. I truly loved the years I spent with this company, and truly love the people I worked with. I genuinely wish them all well, but that new administrator is not a good fit, and that breaks my heart because it is a genuinely good company to work for and they really do care about their employees. 

Management will pull out all the stops when you are first hired to make you feel appreciated and that you are a part of a team who treats one another like family. This culture quickly changes once they start to pile on >5 visits per day and require >4 on call days per month. If you begin to ask for help or attempt to voice your concern about being overloaded, managers will begin to question your overall ability to work and treat you negatively and inappropriately.
Pay was salary and often worked well over full time hours without any overtime pay, no extra pay for working on the holidays/required to pick up on call during the holidays. 
On call was quite stressful and you had to be at home and ready to go at any moment. No hourly pay was offered for being on call and often was glued to my phone calling in prescriptions or communicating with families who were being triaged who may need information/visit. 
Training is little to none, just some recorded videos of a staff member giving their recommendations or perspectives rather than concrete evidence for why we would preform tasks or interventions to take.
Encouraged to take calls and communicate while driving.
Benefits are extremely expensive.
Large territory and little understanding of difficulties caused by traffic/road changes. 
Poor infection control.

As a triage nurse I respond to the patient or caregiver on the other end of the line to try to resolve their concerns. When that is not possible via telephone Unity has dedicated experienced on call nurses to make a visit. The nurses are friendly and ready to assist no matter the time of the call. Leadership is readily available to provide guidance as well.

What I have learned at Unity is you're never alone even though as a triage nurse I work alone. Yet there is always assistance on the other end of the phone.

Management is the best around. Management is very supportive of  the team and ready to help out with whatever the need is. For my role the on call schedule is out in a timely manner to allow for the night's preparation. Triage is informed of any immediate pt concerns so if that call comes in triage is prepared

The hardest part of my job is when there is a panicked pt or caregiver on the other end of the line that is having a hard time following instructions as their emotions are running high. I wish I could be right there to give them a hug and give them the reassurance that they are not alone.. 

The most enjoyable part of my job is when the the interventions provided to the patient/caregivers are effective and their is a sense of relief you hear in their voice

What is the best part of working at the company?
The staff are very friendly and there is a sense of ‘ team effort’ there. Most everyone has each others backs and there is a strong atmosphere of protecting and caring for our vulnerable patients.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The micromanaging of every small nursing decision by leadership. The sheer volume of people in leadership positions, super top heavy. Very little gets done in under 6 months, without the formation of committees and the consensus of everyone except those who are affected by those decisions. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Co-workers are wonderful and willing to help out anyone, mostly. Management expresses understanding of staff concerns but, then does their own thing anyway. Educators have too much decion making power over the staff nurses and how the nurses practice, which hobbles the nurses and slows them down. There is the feeling at Unity that leadership doesn’t trust the expertise of its nurses. But they say they do.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Long days of struggling to give patients what they were promised at admission, apologizing for the sheer lack of staff to attend to emergencies and struggling with company leaders that have their heads in the sand.

Working with patients and families was awesome and some of the coworkers were great. Management, however, was terrible. Very “hands off” yet micromanaging at the same time. I was literally yelled at by my superiors, who were callous, sarcastic, demeaning, catty, dismissive, flippant, and I personally heard them gossip about other coworkers.
 Training was non-existent and I was left to figure it out on my own in a new market with no social work colleagues familiar with Texas laws/standards. I was respected by coworkers, patients and families and even procured the company several good reviews; however, this went unacknowledged by my superiors. My evaluations were great and I was complimented on my thorough work by patients, families, colleagues and even the very management who terminated me. Health insurance is bare minimum and expensive. Pay was average and the mileage reimbursement policy is a joke, as is communication. I enjoyed the work I did with patients and families and corporate management was ok, but I was leery of Houston management from the get go and ignored my reservations. Lesson learned. Definitely do not recommend working for Houston Unity. 

The head bosses and administrators come from Illinois. The best part about this job is working with the patients and the families. Otherwise, the management and company culture not so much. I currently have 10 apps on my cellphone for this one company, which is absolutely ridiculous. For medical records, daily documentation, and timesheets, there way too many apps to navigate and putting it on your personal cell phone instead of having a work device like tablet out in the field sucks. Too much on boarding and training that has nothing to do with your position, you are required to train and learn about everyone’s job and positions in the company. There is not enough professional development, coaching and mentoring, for what you’re actually doing daily with patients and families. They get picky and micromanage your timesheets and travel because you do get mileage reimbursement which is a pro. The work life balance is so so, they expect you to work 8-12 hours a day, evenings and weekends are as needed or on-call, but it’s still like you’re never off of work, you should not have to spend your evenings or weekends doing documentation at any job. 


I have been with Unity since September 2019. I am an RN case manager. I worked for many years as a nurse in hospital/clinic settings, so this was a big change for me. I felt very well supported from the minute I was hired! I had an amazing preceptor who gave me excellent training in the field, and  she got me up and running quickly. I always had someone available to me once my training was completed, to answer my questions or walk me through situations I had not dealt with yet. The management is awesome! They are always available for questions and when complex situations arise in the field, they are right there with you to   help come up with a solution.  I feel like my voice is heard when I have concerns and the team is really great! We work together so well, and everyone is so kind and caring--both to each other and to our patients and families. Being out in the field is fun, and I'm always learning new things, whether it is about different cultures or beliefs, or even about different disease states that I am not really familiar with. Every day is different, so I'm never bored. I love getting to know the families and being able to spend the time that each patient needs and deserves. Unity really is a GREAT place to work!
