I worked as a Transport Aide which in itself is a fine entry level job and is even better if you enjoy moving around and have a genuine compassionate nature for helping those sick people who need you to get them where they are going in a timely manner. However, I will be very honest and blunt in saying that it is an extremely physical position and you are expected to get these people by bed (which are heavy), stretcher and wheelchair and back to back according to the tracking system. Its extremely busy and there will be many times where nursing or other technicians in charge of where you have to pick up or drop off a patient will be upset with you but they don't really understand how busy it is on your part having to get patients back to back with no resting period (especially if you on the day shift). Try your best no one in other departments can truly understand the life of a transporter unless their in it. Oh, and be warned that there will be times that occur where its so busy you'll be pushing a patient by yourself in a heavy bed because a tea member may be caught up in their own transport or whatever (and if u get injured their will be no mercy for you). You will get rushed & u will get reprimanded for being slow. Oh, and Stretchers & Wheelchairs are nothing to push especially when you use proper body mechanics (those mechanics are not taught to you but you had better learn them) And dont be afraid to tell a Nurse, Tech or Supervisor that you need assistance with your patient when things are taking too long and you don't feel safe pushing by yourself because technically your not. But I had been given the crazy look plenty of times because others will feel like its not their job. The Hospital is huge and the hallways your pushing down are basically city blocks. You have been warned. But I did Love it there and still believe it to be a wonderful learning place where you can grow if your are on the path to do so.

Hired about 10 months ago here for my first phlebotmy job,  They hired me from out of state which was in my opinion a huge risk but I am very happy they took that risk. Couldn't find anything in my home state so i applied here and it worked out for the best to be honest. Pay is chump change compared to my home states pay, but with the lower cost of living in MS I still come out on top. Medical benefits suck because they have a deductible and no copay, but for $40 a month I really can't complain. You earn personal and medical leave from your first day on which is pretty amazing. I have been here since January of 2021 and i have almost 80 hours of personal time. Management isn't to bad here on the phlebotomy side of things. Sure there are things that need improvement but that's anywhere with any job, no job is perfect. We are understaffed which put additional strain us when one person calls in or is scheduled off, however we make it work and do the best we can. I have heard complaints from other shifts about employees always calling in or there being a lot of drama, not much of this on the shift I currently work. Parking is a nightmare!!! I don't have the patience to ride around what feels like a whole town to find a parking spot. If you can afford it park in the garage... Sucks we have to pay for parkingin the garage and don't even get like an employee discount. LOL I don't have much else to say other than I am very thankful they took the risk of hiring a person from out of state and gave them an amazing opportunity to better themselves and become a healthcare professional. If they hadn't I would still be in my home state working in the restaurant industry hating by job. Thanks to God and to UMMC for taking a chance on the newly certified, fresh out of school, girl with the shaved head from out of state. 

I worked the night shift 7p-7a. I would be charge nurse off and on during my employment. On my shift i would assess patients, take vital signs, document I&O's,start IV's, enter orders in computer, chart, pass medicines. I mentored some of the younger nurses on how to do things that they had never tried before (retention enemas, bladder irrigation etc). Truthfully, I learned how to deal with residents and interns. We very seldom had a primary care Dr make rounds.
My clinical manager and I did not get along and she would call me to her office at least once a week to complain about something that was done even if it was not my patient. My last two months she would tellme that she could just fire me and I would not be able to put my last two months into the PERs system that I needed.. I had been to human resources three times over things she did or daid to me. 3 weeks before I retired she was fired due to the rapid turnover of staff that left because of her behavior.My clinical director and I got along great. In fact she told me if I had a problem with my clinical manager to call her at home and let her (the clinical director) handle the problem. Hardest part of this job was getting used to tracheotomies and laryhgectomies with facial flaps but I did learn how to care for these patients and became proficeint in this skill.
I got along with all of my co-workers. I came from a team work background and if a nurse received a neww admit, every nurse on the floor that was available went to the room to get the admission work completed faster. One nurse would start the IV and collect blood, one wwould take the history, one would take the vital signs etc

The University of Mississippi Medical Center has several issues stemming from a lack of training, a lack of involvement from human resources, and a lack of funding. I say lack of funding because they can build a building, that's something they're great at, maintaining those buildings is another story. Their support departments recieve very little funding, especially support departments for the OR (Sterile Processing) for instance.

I worked at this company for 3 very long, extremely stressful years. I've never been more stressed then I was when I worked here.

On top of the stress was the joke of a salary I received. I left making 11.23 an hour, that's $23,358.40, before tax, after tax it was usually around $13,000. I barely paid my bills and I was living with my parents. Most if not all of the employees that work here have two jobs, some three. That's how little they pay you here.

The employees in Sterile Processing are cliquey, especially night shift, I watched them run off several people because they weren't one of them, particularly those that weren't cool with their negative views and their lazy work ethic.

Management was a nightmare, they were terrible leaders and if they felt threatened by you they would find a way to get rid of you.

Every department at this company is short staffed and overworked.

My advice, do not even consider working here, especially if you are support department personnel.

Also, most employees, especially support personnel have to park across the street at a stadium which can be dangerous especially at night.

Was responsible for inventory of controlled substances and other high ticket medications at UMMC. Managed inventory of pharmacy units - both inpatient and outpatient. Using an outside vendor's product, was able to review individual use of controlled substances (narcotics) and look for potential abuse/misuse practices. Needed to create spread sheets and data collection to present to hospital based committee monthly.
Learned more of the drugs under surveillance as well as the state and federal laws controlling these medications. Had more expertise in using the computer as a work tool.
Worked at many levels . . . as a manager of others in assisting inventory and giving direction. Worked on a colloquial level with other managers in the hospital/health center. Also interacted with Directors of different disciplines , , ,nursing, pharmacy, security, etc.
Was key contact with the DEA for any infractions requiring contact.

The hardest part is when you identify someone who is abusing a drug, but think I had the research and communication when presenting the information to committee for follow through. I was at peace that the data collected was correct.

This was a unique position and probably the first in practice. Unfortunately with the financial situation in 2008, this was one position that was eliminated within the Department of Pharmacy.

There was never a typical day. Would deal with a variety of personalities each day. Utilizing a COBE Spectra CellSeparator, performed therapeutic plasma cell collections (for a variety of disease issues . .mostly neurological), red blood cell exchanges (for sickle cell disease), therapeutic white blood cell depletions or collections (collections were for stem cell collections), platelet collections or bone marrow manipulation.
Also, responsible for inventory management and the creation and update of Policy & Procedure Manual.
Each day was a learning day whether learning a disease or perfecting one's skills with the equipment.
Focus on one's own time management and within the small group of nurses and med-techs using the machinery. Due to the small space, learned to be very aware of communication with co-workers, patients, family and physicians.
Enjoyed working with the cell separator and perfecting my abilities each day. Also, enjoy patient interaction.
Hardest part is when the equipment malfunctions or the patient requiring better venous access - which challenged time management.

The people are great, and it is nice being connected to such a big organization.  It is the state's only Level 1 trauma center and the only Children's hospital in the state. UMMC offers great benefits- BCBS state plan, PERS retirement eligibility after 25-30 years of service, depending on your hire date or age 60 (if vested), personal leave and medical leave, paid holidays.  
As for cons, basically, the only way to get a raise is to change jobs/departments completely; annual evaluations are given but merely for paperwork purposes, no raises are given. Depending on the job title, there is limited upward mobility. They do tend to hire and promote from within, so that is a plus.
**And while I know there is a level of politics at every job, it is blatantly obvious here. A manager will tell one group there's no way to ask for or justify a raise, while steadily increasing their duties. But will move h*ll and high water to give another group a title change in order to give them a raise and justify their jobs.
Overall, it's a matter of what your priorities are. It's dependable, no worrying about your check being late or short. You can make a career here, or it can be a pit-stop to get experience for your next move.



A typical day here is unpredictable. Some days are good and some days are bad. Working on an adult inpatient unit has its ups and downs. There are days when you truly appreciate being a nurse and providing patient care and there are also days when you wish you would reconsider the field in which you work. Working here has allotted me the opportunity to be exposed to everything that the field of medicine and healthcare has to offer. Because this is a state institution, it accommodates many different types of patients from all walks of life. I can truly say that I have learned entirely a lot being employed as a registered nurse at this facility. Management is so-so, those that do not work directly in patient care are ok, they do not truly understand how some things should be managed as it relates to patient health care. Nurse managers are good. Workplace culture is varied. By working here, you are allotted the opportunity to work with many disciplines of healthcare. The hardest part of the job is sometimes ensuring that you have done everything that you can do as a nurse to ensure patient safety and getting everything done in a timely manner without distractions/interruptions. The most enjoyable part of the job is when patients show signs of improvement in their health and personally appreciate you for your job in taking care of them while hospitalized.

UMMC IS THE ONLY LEVEL 1 HOSPITAL. AND HOLDS SUCH A HONORABLE AND WELL RESPECTED REPUTATION, FOR HAVING A HIGH REGARD FOR  THE HUMAN LIFE...HOWEVER...During my time at UMMC it really could have been better. Appreciation plays a HUGE part in life, not just work! But when you do your job and at times somebody elses, a simple  thank you would be nice. The lack of staff, favoritism, laziness, sarcasism and personalities clashing was a bit much. But,the rudeness,intimidation and some of the remarks that have been towards some of the families by SOME of the staff, ( PCTs,nusre asst. LPNs,  & RNs) at times, me soooo mad. That's what I had the biggest personal, heartfelt problem with. I'm only speaking for my dept. And those that I worked with. NOT EVERYONE was this way. But I can count them all on one hand.
So, I'm not here to say DON'T join the UMMC family.(KEY WORD FAMILY) If you are genuine, caring, patient, and want to make someone else feel better, your NEEDED. If your just in it for the money, or because "ITS A JOB"...Just know....WE ALL KNOW WHERE WE HAVE BEEN BUT NONE OF US KNOW WHERE WE ARE GOING, OR WHO MAY HAVE TO CARE FOR US OR SOMEONE WE LOVE!!!!!
And my advise to the "UPPER MANAGEMENT", COMMUNICATION! 
Talk to your staff, ( we are bedside) talk to the families, and patients that can. Get a better perspective of things😕

It's in a call center setting. There are approximately 22 ambulatory access center guides with individual cubicles, assisting callers with general information and facilitating calls to a desired facility or department. I've learned to work in a fast-paced environment, while providing consumers with the necessary compassion and direction required to do a job effectively and efficiently. Our department consists of one manager, a supervisor, and a director. My co-workers are primarily women. The most challenging aspect of our job, would be the continual updates and changes which occur within the department, and the ability to maintain a "smile" for each caller, because we handle calls for University Physicians, which is throughout the Jackson, Flowood, and Ridgeland areas (their dermatology clinic is in Ridgeland). Calls sometimes also include the University Hospital main campus. The most enjoyable part of my job is being able to help assist people who are really in need of assistance, and I'm able to get them to the correct department, when they sometimes may not know where it is they need to go.
