This entire Lab is stressed to the max, but nights is the whipping boy. I've worked in other very busy stat labs but this place is horrible. I don't mind working my rear off, the day flies by. I loved the work, very much generalist work and they have a lot of nice new updated equipment. But the manager ruins the atmosphere. They're down 2 techs because the manager continues to run people off. (btw, they only advertise one at a time) When they hire someone they often don't last through the training period. You do lots here, nights/evenings do micro as well and it requires a 3 month training period and you need to be able to work short immediately for night shift. A major problem is that you're often put into positions where you can't follow protocol. I had 5 blood gases and 3 critical values in Chemistry and 4 critical values in Hematology. I was alone because the other tech was setting up a critical positive blood culture in Micro. There's no way to run the blood gases and call 7 critical values with in the 10 minute time frame allowed for each critical???

The manager rules with a negative attitude and pits people against each other. She encourages write-ups and has employees rate each other and tells you about random negative comments people say. The shifts are not treated equally and the leads tend to write up nights the most since they're writing up such trivial stuff they don't want to give them to the tech working next to them. The manager keeps an excel spread sheet with your mistakes, every one punitive and equal. If you entered a result wrong that counts the same as putting dots (10.9.14) on your dates cause she likes slashes10/9/14.  The Quality Assurance Reports where created as a learning process but they are all punitive. You work your guts out every night and in the AM all you see is angry faces, the atmosphere brings out the worst in everyone.

The Union rep says that she goes to Valley for more disciplinary reasons than all her other hospitals combined, that says it all.

`the manager of hospital billing plays favorites. people who have worked for the company over 10 years are overlooked for promotions & people who have barely been there a year are promoted; people with much less experience and knowledge of the field.  the manager openly admits that she likes to work with temps because the union MAKES IT HARDER TO GET RID OF PEOPLE.  if she does not like you, or if her favorites do not like you, she will look for, or even make up reasons, to fire you.  she believes all gossip & does nothing to shut it down, but if the gossip is about her or her coordinator, they are quick to ask who is saying what, so those people can be punished. 
the workload is unreasonable...you are to complete 50 accounts per day. i have never in my 13 years in this industry been made to complete 50 accounts per day in follow up.  she does not care if you are sick, she only cares about if it is you who are sick or a family member because 'you have certain rights if it is your family.' and are 'protected' i was told if it is a family member who is sick.
i have a disability and i was forced to use a broken chair, the manager refused to get me one that wasn't broken. they do not accomodate people with disabilities there.  it was my dream to work for valley medical center, but that dream turned into a nightmare.  i was brought on as a temp for a denial specialist position & was told three days later not to tell anyone why i was there...very shady!  it was proven that she lied to the union about my employment there.  management is not trustworthy.

I was a student HUC a year ago in the renal respiratory unit on 3 North. My preceptor was extremely nice & very warm to me during my time with her. However, a year later, I decided to apply for an open position on the same unit. When I came to the unit, all three managers were almost 30 minutes late. Red flag right there. When I was finally called back into the room, there was a thick air of awkward tension as soon as I stepped in. Almost immediately, I felt as if they didn't want me there and did not want to talk to me. Neither of the managers knew what they wanted to ask me, one lady kept giving me side eye glances. They would give each other confusing looks as if they did not know what to ask me. But, I answered what they managed to have the courage to get out for the sake of the moment. However, I finished the interview with a smile hoping to lighten the mood but I'm sure they had already made their decision within 10 seconds of sitting down with me. I felt very uncomfortable as if they were judging me unnecessarily. Even if they did offer the job to me, I did not want to work with them. The workplace culture was not a good fit for me. They seemed very standoffish and gave me blank condescending looks. Not a place I would work in. I prefer a friendlier, accepting environment. Good luck finding that here.

Valley Medical Center had an excellent nurse residency program.  I was able to gain experience floating to many different areas.  I worked on mostly on 3e general medicine and cardiac floors, and they had great, supportive care teams that worked well together.  Sometimes the patient load could be heavy and this was the most challenging part of the job.  It was very fast-paced.  They had a break nurse and this helped to provide relief for breaks on day shift.  I enjoyed the training opportunities and this was the best part.  The Doctors had a care meeting every day giving an update on the patients and nurses were called into this meeting as well as the other disciplines prior to my quitting in 2012.  This was very helpful to hear the goals of care from the Doctors themselves.  Overall, it was a very positive experience and I was constantly learning.

I have been working at Valley medical center for almost five years. Started working at the residency family medicine clinic and after three years transferred to urgent care. I completely love the schedule with being off for the first half of the week and working for the second. It works out great with my son's schedule and school. I love waking up in the morning to go to work and have a great feeling that there are people that I am going to be able to help that day. Every smile and thank you is worth a lot. It tends to get busy in the urgent care but that is very good to be able to move at a fast pace. Especially because I like to keep myself busy with patient or stocking supplies. It also makes a great difference when I am able to work well with management of a daily basis. Great coworkers that are able to understand each other even on a bad day when patients are not satisfied. The best part of my job is while taking care of elderly patients they tell me a little piece of they are life. Also taking care of children and put them at ease in the doctors office either with a sticker or just playing with them. Its a great feeling when at the end of the day you know you made a little bit of a difference.

Poor management. Horrible almost non-existant departmental training and on-boarding. They allow bullying and don't require certain staff members to follow policies put in place to protect the patients and staff but others get in trouble for the same thing depending on who reports it. If you bring something you're concerned about to their attention management will minimize the situation, look at you as a trouble maker and make your life difficult. You get sick leave but get in trouble for using it. When Covid started they stopped contributing to retirement and N95 fitting was done on the Covid positive floor putting staff at risk. They don't care about the well-being of their staff! Many people have left and they are working severely short staffed. No amount of pizza or marketing materials can make up for that!!

For the most part this is a great place to work! Teams work together, people are treated with respect, they live up to their mission of treating everyone like family. However there has been a lot of turnover with upper leadership since 2021 and people move on. My new manager creates a toxic environment for their team. Previous leaders have trusted us and have had our back. It has been very challenging to not feel demoralized by the patronizing tone the new manager uses. They are a different person when they communicate with their peers or supervisors. Over half of the team has complained about the borderline harassment, but nothing has improved. I've had to muster up my own self-esteem and self-worth after feeling shamed and criticized in every interaction. 

Before I worked at Valley I had been out of school 2 years and had interned at many hospitals but work at two and Valley was my third. It was kind of mind blowing once I got in my own groove of things after orientation. I was excited to see how well everyone worked together. How nice management was and how willing they were to help. Now this could be a difference I noticed because I came from a "right to work" state (TN) to union (WA). Nurses, RTs, PCAs, Discharge planners, Doctor's etc all worked well and were very nice for the most part! All of the ICU intensivists are very intelligent and approachable! And you got your breaks for the most part unless everybody's load was full and busy.

In a very productive department in the hospital, I feel that the director has her head in the sand  like an Ostrich. The manager is like a bull dog allowed to treat anyone any way that she wants  without repercussion. The manager is extremely abusive and belittling, and encourages coworkers to "tattle" on each other on a daily basis, and has shared personal information of employees with other co-workers. I feel that an organization that teaches it's employees to be considerate of diversity, should make sure that the leaders of each department is actually practicing that.

I have been at this company for over 9 years. It was voted one of the best places in Washington to work - but not since 2010. It was around 2011-12 that everything started to change and it became more of a business than a place for caring for patients. Providers are burning out and staff in all departments do not feel valued or respected. I have a lot to offer and should be appreciated for all that I do. Unfortunately, recent changes (again) in management have made these problems worse - not better, and for this reason I have made the decision to leave their employ.
