Virginia Heart

Virginia Heart is the absolute worse facility to work at.  EXTREMELY unprofessional management and uppers.  No one cares who you are and what you bring to the table.  Managers don't know work flow of their employees and honestly aren't even allowed to manage.  Upper management won't let the managers they hire to make decisions that managers should be able to make.  They have people in charge who refuse to speak to their employees even though they are barking orders for things to be done.  Partly they don't want to speak to you because they don't even know what they are really doing.  Extremely under qualified management.  Compensation is NOT competitive and you are paid the minimum of what they can possibly get away with.  It is a good entry level job but the turn around is horrible because of it.  No growth at all.  Unless you work at the corporate office you aren't even cared about which might not even be true because for 2 years our COO didn't even know what office I worked in.  No one gets individual reviews and you get this standard e-mail with a standard raise across the board so someone who does little to no work gets the same raise as someone who works their butt off for the company... seems fair.  If I could give the company 0 stars I would.  The company is growing way too fast for anyone to keep control of things and it shows.  A LOT A LOT A LOT of favoritism and it is always to employees that are sneaky and don't want to do anything.  Good Employees are treated like dirt and used and they know it is going on and do nothing about it.  Employees don't act their pay and think that they are in charge of others when they don't have a management title or even being compensated to do so.  It is a very corrupt place to work.  OH and obviously because they treat their employees horribly even though they seem to forget their employees help keep their business running they don't treat patients any better.  I know first hand because my grandmother is a patient and the attitudes and unprofessional front desk staff treated her and my mother who brings her so horribly they have no intensions of coming back.  If they are treating an employee's family member like that anyone coming in doesn't stand a chance.  It is sad that this is how they think medicine and people with heart conditions should be treated.  very pathetic in my opinion.

Working as a Cardiac Technician at Virginia Heart has been a valuable and rewarding experience, especially for anyone interested in cardiology or pursuing a future career in healthcare. A typical day involves rooming patients, performing ECGs, performing stress testing (upon successfully completing stress training program), placing cardiac monitors, reviewing charts, and helping manage clinical in-basket messages within scope through EPIC. The clinic can be busy at times, but the workflow keeps you engaged and constantly learning.

One of the most valuable aspects of the role is the clinical exposure. I have learned a great deal about ECG interpretation, stress testing protocols, cardiac imaging, and how cardiologists evaluate and manage cardiovascular disease. It is a great environment to develop clinical reasoning and patient communication skills.

Management is generally supportive and approachable, and there is a strong emphasis on teamwork. The providers, nurses, technicians, and administrative staff all work together to keep the clinic running smoothly. When the clinic gets busy, colleagues are usually willing to help each other out.

The hardest part of the job can be balancing multiple responsibilities at once during high-volume clinic days. There are many moving parts, and efficiency and time management are important skills to develop.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the patient interaction and the opportunity to play a role in cardiovascular care. Helping patients through diagnostic testing and seeing how those results guide treatment decisions is very rewarding.

Overall, Virginia Heart is a great place to gain meaningful clinical experience in cardiology and work alongside knowledgeable providers and staff.


A typical day at work:
A typical day involves handling various tasks and responsibilities efficiently, depending on your role. While the work itself is manageable, the environment at the Alexandria office is often overshadowed by issues with the site management. The rest of the employees are generally great and helpful, but dealing with management can be stressful.

What I learned:
I learned how to navigate a difficult work environment while maintaining professionalism. It was also a lesson in how upper management can have positive leadership but still struggle with site-level management issues.

Management:
At the corporate level, the CEO and COO are fantastic—they listen to their staff, take feedback seriously through quarterly surveys, and genuinely try to make improvements. However, at the Alexandria site, the manager and site supervisor create a toxic work culture by engaging in gossip and favoritism. There were also instances of inappropriate behavior, including the site supervisor making racial jokes and behaving unprofessionally with patients’ belongings (she threw a patients underwear around and said it was stained).

Workplace culture:
The overall company culture is supportive and inclusive, but the Alexandria office stands out negatively. The site supervisor and manager only back each other up and fail to listen to their staff, which leads to a stressful and uncomfortable work environment.

The hardest part of the job:
The hardest part was dealing with the toxic work environment created by the Alexandria site management. Confronting the manager about him gossipping only confirmed the problem, and the lack of accountability made it worse.

The most enjoyable part of the job:
The most enjoyable part was working with my co-workers, who were professional and hardworking. Outside of the Alexandria location, I had positive experiences when floated to other sites. Additionally, the benefits (medical and dental) were solid, although the pay could be better given the cost of living in the area.


I am so glad I came to Virginia Heart! It is an excellent place for both new grads and experienced nurses. After almost 5 years of working that hospital life, I needed a change and Virginia Heart has delivered in every way imaginable. The first thing I noticed was the work environment and the professionalism. The people here are so friendly, engaging, and non-judgmental. You truly get a sense that everyone works together here. They are very big into employee appreciation and create an environment that breeds success and plenty of learning opportunities. They're also involved in community service. They're the largest cardiologist practice in the state and you will work with some of the best doctors in the business. Between general cardiology, EP, structural, nuclear, interventional, they do it all here. The benefits are excellent, the work schedule is consistent (which is a big plus for me), the administration is approachable and actively involved in making sure their employees have what they need, and it's really a comfortable place to be. There are also regular opportunities to advance up the ladder. I have really enjoyed my time here and it's started to feel like a second home. They really care for their people and their patients. 

Virginia Heart is a great company if you are looking for a consistent work schedule in the outpatient setting. There are multiple office locations across northern Virginia. There are flexible hours based on seniority, position, and staffing. The cardiologists here are truly top tier and give excellent patient care. The providers are very appreciative of the work done by nurses, techs, and medical assistants. Management differs by office but reviews are standard across the practice. The hardest part can be balancing a growing patient population with limited staff/resources, but I suspect that is the case in almost any healthcare setting. PTO is usually always approved. Added mental health days this year are a great perk to have. Workplace culture has always been enjoyable with hardworking colleagues, rep lunches, and employee appreciation benefits. Holiday parties are always fun as well!

The office was opened at 7:30 AM, patients arrived shortly afterward. The last patients left the office anywhere between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm. During the day nurses managed patient flow in and out of the office while handling patient phone calls for triage, refill requests and medication management, using pre set protocols. when I first started there was a real professional environment. Patients came first. during the years there was increased requirements for the nurses to carry clerical tasks, since there was no one else to do it. Due to the turn over I was trying to juggle these tasks for the office without much support from the manager. The manager often had expectations without communication to myself. When I would take concernes about the situation to him he would nod his head, but take no action. Unforntuately, some of the issues I went to him about got turned back on me as not being flexible enough. But I stood by them, as it was affecting patient care.

•Performed daily chat preparation ensuring that required documentation is prepared in advance to ensure efficient patient flow
•Authorizes prescription refills under direct supervision of the physician
•Assisted the providers with patients in the office including: Clinical chart preparation; obtaining the chief complaint or reason for the visit; obtaining vital signs, reviewing current medication list, past medical history, social history, and review of symptoms

I am a cardiac triage nurse, so my overall day consist of answering telephone calls in the comfort of my own home. I have the ability to assist patients with active symptoms and everyday needs from their doctor. The management is great and I truly do feel like they care about their employees. I feel supported and heard in regards to my direct manager. Workplace culture is good and management is always include fun games/chances to win things to keep employees engaged. Working in the office also has perks of getting lunch provided x1-2 per week, sometimes more. Hardest part of the job is honestly the repetition of things. Easiest part of the job would be not dreading going to work, as the staff I work with is easy and fun to be around/work with.

VH is a great place to learn about healthcare. In general, the other employees are nice, respectful, and supportive. There is some old school vibe here and there, but it is not the overall vibe and is easily manageable. Management is helpful and open to progress.

The workplace is laid back with a healthy sense of professionalism.

The hardest part of the job is knowing how everything fits because it is complicated.

The most enjoyable part of the job is being given attainable goals and the opportunities for problem solving to help everyone's life become easier and smoother.

Management was disconnected from job duties, resulting in overburdening and setting employees up for failure. Turnover is high because of unreasonable expectations and callous management. Main office viewed employees as expendable, yet was understaffed because employees are not easily replaceable. Does not give raises, as many of us were told by our manager and HR. Did not support families, meaning no flexibility in work schedules, no milk expression time for nursing moms unless you are a doctor or have a doctor's note, inconvenient milk expression accommodations that deter mothers from expressing at all, no personal phone calls or else you must justify the emergency, extremely expensive health insurance for families, main office manager who hounded about short breaks.
