I was excited to start after the paid training. The culture they strive for matched with my values. However, after two weeks being on the job; I experienced a management style I have never been a part of. Every job I’ve had I have stayed at least 3-6 years. It took a total of 8-1/2 months, to find a new job and leave. I enjoyed my co workers very much. The nurses at Virtua are incredibly sweet, which is why I applied. I’ve been a patient and was happy to be around a lovely group. Unfortunately, the administration side was where the wolfs ate their young. I was belittled, insulted, and even intimidated. I enjoyed greeting the patients and giving them extra attention. This center is in Berlin, NJ. A retirement home. They posted a job for Front Desk Greeter. Answering phones, and transferring to the different departments. Easy enough for the pay. A high school kid could do it. What I experienced was this-
Normal duties-Answering Phones, routing calls and delivering mail, faxing, smiling, signing visitors in, making sure the patients don’t roll out the front door. Great. Then, administration would ask to generate patient reports: attendance, room occupancy, transferring patient agenda for every floor, special family requests, inventory for the PPE/hospital equipment, fire drill management, maintenance request forms like submitting forms for maintenance, security check to see where the guard is located. Key card distribution to visiting guests, checking company email for important reminders, making patient charts for possible new patients. Ambulance manifest for incoming and out going patients. I understand multitasking, the duties I was doing all while, a maneuver in the front of the desk sat in an office, another manager in a neighboring office, and an administrating assistant next to her. Behind me were two other women who were very sweet, but lazy. I was doing a lot more. Doing the administration assistants job, while she talked down to me, while doing the admissions lady’s jobs preparing their paper work, transferring their calls to them on top of the existing patients needs. The admissions women again, very nice, but all they do all day is wait for printed paper work, get up, give a tour, take the money, sit back down, wait for more printed paper work, to type it back into the system because they don’t understand EMR, wait for a routed call, when they should be getting their own phones BECAUSE I AM NOT THE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT, she would be the one in the back surfing the internet leaving lunch. They would all leave extra early too, between 12-2 if they new they weren’t getting a visit from someone above them. If management above them were to do a pop in visit, we had specific protocols to drop everything we were doing and call each of the five of them on their personal cell phones to tell them to hurry up and come back or skip your 2 or 3 day hiadous’. It made to look like they were there every day, all day. The administrative assistant, admissions department and what ever the two women who have the offices by the front door do because all I’ve ever seen them do is hide in their offices and go to lunch-managed to dump their duties on us older women who are paid greeters and phone routers. The women on our floors who did these things would rotate so we wouldn’t get stuck in the front because of this. In the actual hospital part, it was organized, pleasant and quite fun. And that was because management sat on the other side hidden away. The five women do the bare minimum. And scoff at you if you’re not fast enough or better, condescendingly  speak to you slower like you’re an idiot.  It’s definitely not an uplifting feeling. On top of that, they would crank call to see if you knew the proper things to say, and watch the cameras while the phones are ringing off the hook, not doing their team work, helping everyone’s day but in fact making it their job to make your job less pleasant, planting mistakes, and almost dissatisfied if you caught them. It was almost like a “well you better catch those mistakes administration make’s because it’s your job.” Admissions constantly made hand written  typos, and expected us to transmit the data into the computer for them and catch all of their misspellings, clinical errors and admission protocol errors. Entering admissions and de-admissions- registration. All while smiling in front of prospective clients. And while admissions is back there cackling not doing their literal jobs-ADMISSIONS. And the Administration Asst- looking busy-doing nothing.  It was absolutely disheartening. I know the nurses and actually all of the rest of the staff, the actual important people; were living by the culture. And that is why if I need to do go to a Virtua, I will. However I will never work for Virtua again, and in fact changed careers altogether because I do not ever want to experience that type of environment or feeling ever again. That was my personal experience, hopefully management inside of other Virtuas are not run this way. Sorry for the rant. This was the worst job that should have been the nicest.

Virtua Marlton is a terrible place for new RNs to begin their career.  The training and orientation program, although stated to last 12 weeks, is a fallacy.  

They expect you to learn it all, deal with constantly changing preceptors and the backstabbing politics of the "old guard" nurses in 2-3 weeks, tops.  

If you don't have it all down by then you are terminated 10 weeks before your orientation period is over. 

They hire many more new RN recruits than they need and then weed out before the orientation period is over and full benefits kick in.   

3 South, a med/surg/telemetry floor is notorious for this. They have a VERY high turnover rate for RN's there for less than a year.  The "old guard" RN's are lifers and really couldn't work anywhere else.  

So, you think you have a job fresh out of school but all you really have is a short, unsafe orientation period where most nurses will fail and be back on the market within 3 weeks.  In addition to that you will start your new job search with a black mark on your record. 

This is after they go to the trouble to onboard you, by the way.  It makes absolutely no sense and can be very demoralizing for a new RN. 

Lots of nurse backstabbing at Marlton and the older nurses are not welcoming and go out of their way to sabotage the new recruits. It's all a game for them and they do not practice what Virtua preaches- a "caring culture".  

The preceptors assigned to the new nurses are the ones that want the extra pay that goes along with the job and are the ones that have never been promoted to the "desk" because of personal or professional  issues.  

As a result, they do not make the best people, skill or temperament wise, to "train", and I use the term loosely, the new RN's. Again beware of 3 South in particular.  

They have a big recruiting event coming up, as they always do in June, so be careful and choose another place to begin your career if you can.

I would average about 50-75 claims a day with over 95% accuracy. I coded for many different specialties including both in-patient and out-patient coding, surgeries, Hospice Care, and Internal Medicine.

I performed audits for physicians and educated them on better documentation so they could get the most out of their encounters from a coding/billing perspective. I also educated EMR trainers on correct coding procedures.

I learned a lot about the different specialties, and with an extensive background in the OB/GYN field, I excelled even further as that was one of my assigned fields for coding. I coded Cardiovascular procedures, surgeries of all kinds, along with every other specialty as the company is a large Hospital with Physician offices around the state.

My coworkers were great team-players. We truly were a team. We learned a lot about the constant changes in the coding world and if someone would find information, we would share it with the other team members.

Management was always available when needed and truly cared about their employees. They provided wonderful education when a new specialty would come on board.

I didn't find anything difficult with my job, but sometimes things would be challenging when it came to procedures I had not encountered before, but with research and the assistance of my team members, I would learn the right way to code these.

The most enjoyable part of the job was knowing that I was helping a company not only bring in revenue to keep growing, but the culture of the place was very much focused on caring for not only our patients but each other. I enjoyed coding, itself, for the company. I find coding to be an exciting field.

Overall, many good people at Virtua, and a very polished corporate like atmosphere. Excellent facilities and office centers. Impressive operation and affiliations. Great efforts to try developing staff at their nice learning center, with ample courses to chose from. Majority of staff and services on all levels are wonderful. BIG however; in many areas, the wrong Administrators were placed in charge of Departments where they knew nothing about that Departments' particular operation, not keen enough to recognize true skills, and too ignorant to realize realistic goals. Squeeze blood from all Departments, particularly nursing manpower.  ED Department is an under-staffed zoo, a nightmare, with a revolving door of multiple managers failing to succeed at one of the campuses. On the other hand, unfairly Pro-nursing to the point where they deflect a nursing stumble, and blame other Departments when a nursing issue is encountered. Disgustingly allowed less competent and manipulative secondary managers to move up the ladder and into higher level positions, essentially rewarding failure, and not recognizing such lack of character. Had a knack for pushing the previous Director out by using a fabricated reason to create the vacancy to place a favored member in at less cost. Had itchy trigger fingers when terminating staff to save face. Left you pulling the hair out of your head in frustration with such stupidity, favoritism, and arrogance.  Avoid this place and this environment.

I actually loved my job at virtua.  I enjoyed my patients, never refused an assignment, took mandatory call and was often working many hours beyond my 10 hour shift.  It was a great job and knowing I played a small part in the recovery and pain management of a patients road to recovery was very rewarding.

This was a very labor intensive job where nurses did everything from answering phones, transporting patients, to communicating with anesthesia.  We were somewhat autonomous but the rules seem to change depending on the manager for that year.  It was a very difficult place to work, there was a definite sense of unfairness where rules applied to some but not others.  

I worked the busiest shift 11-2100 and was running till the end of the shift.  The hardest part of the job was pushing huge beds a football length down carpeted halls.  The most enjoyable part was helping patients and anesthesia trouble shoot difficult cases.  Coming from a critical care backround I enjoyed the critical cases but I also enjoyed some of the more simple cases.  

The workplace culture was not very pleasant.  There was too much favoritism and hiring of so called "friends" by management.  It seemed these nurses were qualified by whom they knew not by skills.  

I would not go back to Virtua again.  Having also been a patient there and having family members hospitalized there I have seen a decline in nursing and medical care.  I hope they fine tune their issues and get back on track as it's a major medical facility in this part of the city.

They have 5 hospitals and Epic, you will learn quite a bit about what Epic can do and will gain valuable experience.  Offices are in a decent building in a convenient location but have been able to regularly work from home and rarely gone in.  Coworkers are friendly and understanding people, feels like less office politics versus other IT roles I have worked at.  Management is not often the most in touch though.  Raising concerns are not always listened to and then you are almost gaslit when management realizes that the problem you have been warning them about for weeks is real.  Management at times acts like you are invisible and lets you do your job which is awesome, other times they are super on top of you and nano-managing asking for tons of updates and progress reports and wasting your time updating them that ought to be spent working.  Culture is a bit heavy on meetings, too many of them if you ask me and regularly hear that there are too many meetings and not enough work time from team members across applications.  Turnover has accelerated a bit the last year and change, but it is less than at other places I have worked Epic in the past.  It can be a bit chaotic and unorganized at times, maybe more so than your typical IT department supporting Epic.

I could not have asked for a greater group of people or physicians to work with at Virtua The Cardiology Group.  Everyone was so down to earth and easy to talk to, I love them all!!  The problem was that they were more concerned about the patient satisfaction surveys that were coming through and not enough concern about the employee satisfaction.  They hold us to such high standards to cater to the patient's and we all agree that the patient's come first but without adequate staff and physicians schedules, they literally demand us to preform the impossible.  With proper staffing and with more "employee satisfaction", comes way more patient satisfaction.  We were understaffed in our secretary pool for so long and with 50-60 phone calls coming through for each of us per day plus having to cater to the patients needs, refills meds, authorizations for med (which takes time and concentration) plus all of their medical issues that patients have, comes the overwhelming  stress to make things quick,  this is no way to give good quality care.  Our patient's deserve to be taken time with and not rushed, especially if the are having issues.  When we are overworked and understaffed, the quality goes down.  Virtua needs to focus on the needs of their employees and the quality of work.  This will hands down improve the quality that their patient receive in turn.  And in turn improve patient satisfaction surveys so that our great Virtua Admins can afford their lifestyle.   #we work for you, please work with us

While at Virtua Center for Surgery was an experience in itself. There were multiple surgical cases for various surgeons of different fields of surgery.  My responsibility consisted of ensuring that every surgeon had his or her own instruments, supplies and equipment for that day’s cases.  This was handles by maintaining an open dialog with the nursing staff.  Every case had common supplies but there were often times when an implant or a specialty item was required.  I would be tasked with finding the exact product for the most reasonable price. This would mean search through various vendors.   In all this I was expected to keep my monthly inventory below $45000.00.  This was accomplished by negotiating prices in advance of cases, ensuring accurate receipt of supplies and cost. I was expected to maintaining proper circulation of equipment, while maintaining timely yearly and monthly Preventive Maintenance of equipment.  I was also required to conduct physical inventory of all supplies every three month.  A report analyzing the usage, cost per case, discrepancies, and variances was expected to be turn into my Administrated every month.
I found this position to be a motivational driving force.  I was challenged to learn new cases and the supplies utilized, while supporting the clinical staff.

At the interview I was asked about a time I had broken policy. I had  never broken policy, so that question brought me comfort about the job, but once I started working, I realized that they would frequently put you in positions to break policy without needed clearances, and tell you after the fact that they were not authorized. 

Their training was disorganized and incomplete; and the staff was mostly stressed out and emotionally unavailable even to engage in day to day transferring information. 

During my experience there, they relocated to a smaller, less practical and more stressful space and, despite multiple concerns and requests, never perform a run through or slight training of the new process that would be needed for the new location.

Their feedback is inconsistent and deceptive. Staff and colleagues will paint an image of stability and contentment, then they will let you go literally overnight without any notice or care about your individual circumstances. 

The staff is not familiar to diversity at all. They will not respect your identity because they are “confused”. Culturally, you will  hear your colleagues gossip about absolutely everything. Finally, they will never tell you improvement points, not even if directly asked; but they will penalize you anyway before you can improve. 


Sadly I have to give this employer extremely low marks across the board. I've been in healthcare for well over 30 years and have worked numerous institutions in NJ and PA. Virtua by far has been the worst place I've worked.  1st let me offer a positive note: the DIRECT CARE staff in the Cath Lab (Marlton) were a wonderful cohesive group to work with. While I noted some concerns with patient safety, they were open to improvement. 

Most very employer has that one employee that stands out as difficult to work work with however the organization refuses to do anything about them. Virtua takes the cake in this area. I have never encountered such a difficult, overbearing, concerning employee in all my career. Following the proper chain of command in reporting numerous concerns proved fruitless (Director-->Mgr--> Sr Dir Nur--> HR). I was the 4th person in this role within the past 6 months. Not only were my concerns, which started day 1, dismissed I was essentially bullied (4 on 1 on my 3rd day of employment....WOW!).  All I could think of in the moment was: What if I was a brand new nurse...I would be scarred buy these encounters with management. Lack of administration support is ultimately why I resigned after only 4 weeks.
