Voices for Independence

A typical day at work would involve meeting with consumers with disabilities at their homes or in public, for example, at a library. I would usually see 3 or 4 consumers a day depending on their situations. We set goals to achieve for the consumer on a monthly basis, working together daily to achieve said goals. The ultimate goal was to not need the service and feel empowered enough to live well with a disability. Documentation and paperwork were essential since the Commonwealth had a set amount of hours to meet weekly per consumer, updated quarterly. 2-4 hours per week was the typical amount. 

I learned so much at VFI I cannot remember it all. I learned how the Americans' with Disabilities Act is used on a daily basis with enforcement of the codes and regulations set forth by the law. Advocacy begins at home with the individual taking initiative and responsibility as a citizen to stand up for individual rights. The channels of communication are set up to help with the improvement of our society. One must utilize the channels set by our government, if not then they seem created in vain. By counseling others with physical disabilities on the peer level I learned how to approach situations with a logical thinking and an open mind. Listening and helping figure out problems with others has made me a better professional and team member since I have had to use those traits for past work.

Management during my tenure at VFI was good. Whenever I had questions about particular situations I had never come across someone was always around to guide me and answer me questions. We had supervisors who truly cared about and respected us as individuals. 

My co-workers were the hard working, experienced, and intelligent. We had to act as a team because our departments worked together. The service coordination would overlap into the departments providing the services being coordinated. As providers of said services they were the utmost professionals and cared about their jobs. We helped each other as necessary in times of emergencies for consumers, and during the regular days of consumers' lives. 

The hardest part of the job was watching a consumer utilize their right fail not achieve the goals they had set out to achieve. Every individual has a right to as much success as possible, or failure. When one would be taken off the program due to inaction were hard days of the job because it is what the consumer and I had made of it. 

The most enjoyable part of the job was when a consumer would be confident enough to take initiative and control of their lives. When one would succeed and have the confidence to stand up for their individual rights as a person with a disability were the most fulfilling times. Another highlight was when a consumer would be transitioned from a nursing facility into the community and thrive. Those moments were the most enjoyable and rewarding parts of the job.

I enjoy when I am working. That's one thing that I am not very happy about is the amount of work and effort to get a position if you are not working on a permanent basis. They offer a fill in position however the travel isn't usually worth it.  I love the staff and the office. They call you back as soon as possible but I'm a little bit disappointed that I am not working permanently right now. I was working with a client in my backyard and I was given the job right after training which was great. I'm looking now for the best position in my backyard and I can't seem to get one. I'm still employed but it's been since January that I had a fill in position for two days. All the available shifts are way to far to travel to as far as working in the surrounding areas goes but it's not worth the travel time for a cpl hour shift that I am driving 45 minutes to get to. I'm looking forward to getting myself a new client soon and I will update the review upon learning more about the company and how things go.  I'm also wondering about the mileage reimbursement cuz I've turned in 2 months and I didn't get it back in my paycheck so I'm not sure if they do them separately and how often if so. Will update you when I learn more.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Sometimes their administrative staff is not available at the times you are at work that can be frustrating but when they do return, they will call you and help with what they can

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment for me was always great. The clients I took care of very respectful and any administrative staff I had contact with always treating me with respect and dignity.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day working for Voices For Independence varied because you had clients that like different things, but it was just like basic caregiving

Absolutely the worst place I have ever worked! My supervisor was changed repeatedly, and I was made to feel stupid when I didn’t know who they were. Any concerns I had were not addressed, EVER. The office staff is incompetent, especially supervisors and scheduling staff. I was called 4 times by 3 different schedulers to go to work, when I was ALREADY AT WORK! The last call came from a scheduler who couldn’t remember what I’d told them. Disorganized and incompetent! They hire people without transportation and criminal records. Twice in the past few years they have been in the news because of attendants have abused and/or stolen from consumers. They do not care about their staff, not those they serve. If you are looking for a job, go elsewhere. If you are looking for care, please look at ANY other agency! 

What is the best part of working at the company?
It's one on one with your consumer, you go in and take care of them and they become part of your family if you become close friends.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It was the distance that I had to get to the main office for training and mandatory meetings.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Depending on who you were working for, but they had a little bit of each culture, but mostly older folks, so more old school than new school. I enjoyed working for the veterans.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It was cooking, cleaning, walking the pup, running errands on foot, and spending time with them, hearing stories about their past. To me that is always the best part of working home health.

VFI gave me the opportunity to get paid for helping people and making them feel cared for. Once I clock in I follow my everyday routine and make sure any additional needs are taken care of for my consumer. I learned that people don't have to be related to someone to make them feel as if you're apart of their family. Management and the workplace culture fall into the same category for me because I feel as if I am at home when I clock in at work which makes my day easier. The hardest part about the job would be making sure everything is done on time before you clock out even when there are additional services needed by the consumer. Working with the consumer and building a bond is the best part about the job because it doesn't feel like you're at a job but exactly where you need to be.

I enjoyed working with the consumer's. Offering my assistance and having integrity made the consumer comfortable and easy to work with. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When the agency, consumer, aide communications are not made clear.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
There are a variety of work environments. If you can easily adapte and communicate clearly and efficiently thongs should run smoothly.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
If you have built a good relationship with your consumer and manager things should run smoothly.

Being the only specialist with no support was the hardest to integrate the others and rather be segregate for the deaf and hard of hearing services. I have tried to establish many different events which I get turned down. The company only gets the funds just to have the services integrate with other disabilities whereas it became more difficult to socialize and we are the invisible human beings. I enjoyed my job and coworkers was great but the process of the independence was diverse. My management was not supervised 90 percent of the time and since I have the fluent in signing and many positions that I expertise in.

Very rewarding being able to help the most vulnerable populations.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of support, very negative work environment, all benefits to the job have been taken away. Reduced pto, no raises, effort never appreciated but those who never complete tasks are overlooked

Very negative. High stress. little support

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Everyday is something different

Management plays favorites, they have laid people off in low funded programs. 
I never knew what to expect. One day something would be the right thing to do and the next you would be chastised for doing the exact same thing. They don’t stand behind their employees even though they say they do and despite being a company that caters to individuals with disabilities, they had no tolerance for employees with mental health issues such as anxiety or ADHD and management admitted to not knowing anything about it. Not a job for someone who can’t handle criticism or bosses with resting b%+&h face.
