Walnut Creek Senior Living Campus

I have been working at Walnut Creek for a while now. When I first started they were very short staffed. As an aide I'd have an entire hall to myself or two rehab halls to myself. On top of being short staffed they pile a bunch of tasks on top of you to get done while trying to properly care for your residents making it almost impossible to do so. They nit pick on things that in my opinion are not things that should be priority over the residents. Now they are slowly starting to get more aides in the door, but sadly I don't see us being able to keep them for long because now that we have more staff they have tripled the work load on us still making it almost impossible to get everything done in 12 hours on top of properly caring for our residents. They offer an 8 hour bonus, which is wonderful, but any little thing you do could get that taken away. Now that we are staffed on first shift I have 13 residents to care for. showers on my hall are a disaster, (Mon,wed,fri-6 showers) (tues,thurs,sat-5 showers) on top of 13 residents and a bunch of showers we are threatened with write ups if we don't get weights done, vitals have to be done, charting takes 50 minutes to do and has to be done before you leave. Now we have to write on a piece of paper stating the exact times that we leave the floor even for lunch breaks that we clock out for. :/ management keeps piling on all of these rules and regulations that are punishable by a write up, or taking our bonuses away and supposedly they want the residents to come first, but it's almost impossible for that to be a priority with all of the stressors that they are putting on the aides. 

I love the residents, and I take pride in my job, there is no other job more rewarding. Unfortunately when management does things like this it puts a bad taste in my mouth because we should be working as a team and putting our residents first which unfortunately isn't the case here and our residents are suffering for it. It saddens me that the residents aren't getting properly cared for because of the work load and stress put on us aides.

There is a disconnect between upper management / scheduling and the nursing assistants. I had 21 residents last night, didn't have time for 2 out of 3 of my breaks because I was too busy. I like being busy, but not when it comes to such a great expense to the residents. It's getting ridiculous. I'm telling you, if you work here as an aide you will be cutting corners to get everything done, and on many nights you will not get everything done. Many nights you'll fee lbad because there wasn't any time to give any showers. There is simply not enough hours in the work day. However, if they were to staff us properly, we would have time to get everything done. Why short us when the nursing assistants only make $11/hr???

The worst part is if there is an emergency. Since we constantly work understaffed, if there is an emergency, good luck finding someone to help you. I had a large resident fall last night and had to wait a long time for the other staff to help. Could you imagine if her injury was worse? 

On a regular night, (if you work 3rd shift), you'll be expected to get 10-15 vitals, change at least 30 Depends, but likely many more, put 5-10 people to bed (pj's, transferring, shower if scheduled, mouth care, etc.,) get 5-10 residents up (same thing - dress, transfer, change depends, etc.), get many residents weights, charting, answer many call lights, and much more... and many times, you'll have to do it all by yourself. 

The only saving grace is some of my coworkers and, of course, the residents. I love my residents. They're legit. If it weren't for them I would've gone crazy long ago.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The only thing that was good about this company was that it was close to my house. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is no structure to the company. Instead of training you the proper way they throw you to the wolves and you are forced to learn everything on your own. No communications and too many chiefs and not enough Indians.  The company and upper management does give the staff the time of day when it comes helping or solving an issue. The company is good at giving out false promises and their expectation about you is not even reachable.  Word of encouragement does not even exist there. They take take take but never give. To be honest it is a Hebrew slave work house. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
You work yourself to death and will never get any kind of appreciation of the work you do. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Your day is never done because they have so much work for you to do. They are constantly piling mire work on you and you can never get it done in a day or in a week.

A typical day shift includes working short (often on a night shift split), being chased all day for vitals, looking for linen, and being hunted down to get to the dining room. Night shift is often scheduled 1 per hall, which is outrageous. No chucks or waterproof pads for beds, Caretracker charting that takes approximately 40 mins or more, and management coming around with a to-do list that must be completed immediately. 70% or more of residents are 2-person assist, and there aren't always 2 on a hall! Loved this place when I first started, but it's getting absolutely ridiculous. You're watched on the cameras on every hall and in the break room, and you have to constantly watch your back. There is paperwork for everything - shaves, 2 hour check and changes, you name it! You can lose that 8 hour bonus for ANYTHING and they loooove suspending people. Uniforms are pretty bad. Morale is bad. Overall, if they don't get the staffing together, I absolutely do NOT recommend this place to anyone. Base pay is low and you can only get up to a 2% raise annually. New aides every week, and you WILL get pulled off of orientation and thrown on an assignment early to cover for the call offs.

There is always something new, every day is different and it makes it enjoyable. I have learned so much and continue to daily and it is rewarding. Being a part of a driven team that focuses on patient care and providing the best quality of life/care with a strong team of caregivers, therapy directors, managers, and providers who work together in making sure this promise is delivered. If you are looking to join a team who advocates for Resident's and stands firm in delivering the best quality of care, if you are looking for a workplace in which you feel secure in, and if you are looking for a job that you leave feeling rewarded in then Walnut Creek Senior Living Campus and it's other locations is the place for you.

Working at Walnut Creek started out fun and a nice place to work, but now I would not recommend this job to a dog. We work short constantly every day. The D.O.N to Nurses to Dietary are constantly hounding our backs about weights, vitals, and signing 2 hour sheets like we don't have other residents to take care of. They will write you up for anything little thing, and they praise that 8 hour bonus but you loose that quickly too for any little thing. They don't have any compassion for their aides and no support for their aides. They have meetings which are called voice meetings but nothing  changes. They work you very hard and the base pay is very low. Overall not a good place to work would not recommend working here.

Chaotic hysterical executive behavior leads to operational dysfunction. The entire organization is micromanaged. Unfortunately, because of this they are unable to retain the amazing talent they recruit. I've interacted and worked closely with a number of great Administrators, CFOs, Clinicians, and many other great staff members. The Executive Director does not allow for business growth and advancement. Allowing for poor accomplishment and wasting money. The same ideas, concepts and procedural requests go ignored causing operational dysfunction, and your left spinning your wheels year after year. It's been my experience here that you've become a target for no real reason breeding fear and promoting environment of stress and fear.

I was employed at Walnut Creek for six months.  I have never felt less appreciated at any job.  When I decided to leave, I was informed that my last paycheck would be at the minimum wage rate because I didn't give two weeks notice.  Two days later, my previous paycheck, which had already been directly deposited into my checking account, was reversed.  It took me a week to get them to issue a paper check, also at the minimum wage rate, which was not in accordance with their stated policy.  I would not recommend working for Walnut Creek.

The positive reviews are from management that they can barely keep. They cannot keep staff due to the incompetence of the owner and management. I implore you to visit for yourself and come to your own conclusion but I’m sure that it will be similar to mine if you are clinical staff. They are very outdated and are adamant about staying that way. I’m not sure why but it’s almost as if they want to ensure that they don’t keep staff. It’s actually quite bizarre. I had to leave because it’s just not a good environment and I can actually tolerate quite a bit because it’s easy for me to separate work from outside but it got to the point I was taking the energy home with me 

We have high expectations and it's very rewarding caring for our residents, it's like having another whole family to care for. Our team is very supportive of each other, we work as a team to make our residents home the best that it can be. After 25 years I still find my job exciting and I enjoy a challenge.Over the years I have learned a lot from my co-workers, our employees and our residents. The most enjoyable part of my job would be caring for our residents and the hardest part would be to see them go.
