I joined West Bend Mutual Insurance as a Project Coordinator supporting a large-scale VDI-to-physical desktop migration initiative. While the role was presented primarily as project coordination, the actual day-to-day responsibilities expanded significantly beyond that scope and included inventory management, deployment logistics, asset tracking, documentation ownership, customer coordination, and operational workflow management across multiple departments.

Early in the project, the rollout was structured with realistic timelines and achievable deployment goals. The initial phases were highly successful, with strong internal customer feedback, improved relationships between IT and business departments, and deployment metrics consistently ahead of schedule. My team built detailed tracking systems, individualized deployment documentation, and operational processes largely from the ground up in order to keep the project organized and moving efficiently.

Unfortunately, the operational direction of the project changed significantly over time. As the rollout gained momentum, leadership aggressively increased deployment expectations without corresponding adjustments to staffing, hardware availability, workflow processes, or organizational support. This created growing operational instability, missed deliverables, and increasing friction between teams despite the project initially performing very well under the original plan.

One of the largest ongoing challenges was the fragmented leadership structure surrounding the project. At various points, responsibilities and expectations were being communicated by multiple managers, contractors, department heads, and project stakeholders simultaneously, often with conflicting priorities or unclear ownership. This created an environment where operational direction frequently felt reactive rather than coordinated.

Performance feedback also lacked consistency and transparency during my time there. Concerns that were eventually cited near the end of my contract were never meaningfully communicated as ongoing issues beforehand, despite regular positive feedback throughout much of the project lifecycle. As a contractor, the environment often felt highly monitored while still lacking the operational clarity and support needed to succeed sustainably long-term.

Overall, the experience felt far more focused on process churn, cost-savings initiatives, and enterprise bureaucracy than on meaningful operational improvement or employee development. While some individuals may enjoy large enterprise environments with constantly shifting priorities and highly matrixed management structures, I would not personally recommend the role or environment based on my experience there.

The company has modern technologies, smart engineers, and genuinely interesting technical challenges involving APIs, cloud systems, distributed architecture, and enterprise modernization. I learned a lot technically during my time there, especially around Azure, React/TypeScript, large-scale workflows, and system integration.

A typical day often involved balancing shifting priorities, evolving requirements, and high delivery expectations in a fast-moving environment. Engineers were expected to adapt quickly and operate independently with limited context.

The hardest part of the job was the communication and collaboration culture. Many interactions across teams and leadership boundaries felt transactional instead of collaborative, especially when trying to work through ambiguity or technical alignment. Asking for clarity or deeper discussion could sometimes feel less encouraged than simply pushing forward.

The most enjoyable part of the role was the technical work itself and the opportunity to work on large enterprise systems with modern tooling and cloud technologies.

This environment is probably a better fit for highly independent engineers who are comfortable operating with ambiguity and minimal guidance. Engineers who value strong mentorship, collaborative architecture discussions, and psychologically safe communication may struggle more than expected.


The company is wonderful, has great benefits and perks, and I love the transparency from the top down. The coworkers and camaraderie are the best part. All my managers have been great about flexibilityand coaching. The people are a huge asset. 
All my experience is in the Claims Department, and the job itself is difficult and demanding and stressful. I worked overtime nearly every week to try to stay on top of the volume. I have sacrificed family time and physical and mental health and never felt like I was succeeding in my roles. It made me second-guess my abilities and doubt myself before I realized it's not my fault that I can't do 45-48 hours of work in a 40 hour work week. 
I'm sure other departments are entirely different. I just didn't have any luck moving out of Claims to confirm it personally. 

My day at work is extremely busy.  I stay focused by making sure everything is filled, and stocked for the associates.  I am learning how to multi task in several locations within the building.  Management is not fair, they could be better by working with the employees instead of against them.  It seems they do what they want instead of working things out.  The culture has changed.  It use to be about the associates, but it has changed in the last 2 years.  I noticed this since I started my new position. The hardest part of my job is that I have to clean bathrooms.  The easiest part of my job is that there not many people here, so I don't have to clean much.

I Can’t think of any. They made everything as easy as possible 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Extremely pleasant! They really try to make everyone feel included and welcome. They spoil you. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Desk work but with a lot of perks and time to take breaks.

IT Management  is not forward thinking and prioritized tactical issues that directly impacts work life balance.  Has a sweat shop feel.  My co-workers and associates are great and give 120%.  It is a lot of long hours with no end in sight where management has a direction in mind and suggestions are not welcomed.

Nobody was kind to me there besides one coworker. Management was poor at training and fielding my questions. Most coworkers never spoke a word to me and as the new guy I quickly felt alienated. Only reason they get good ratings and “best workplace” awards is because they incentivize high ratings from employees through pizza parties etc.

West Bend is a great place to work. The campus is beautiful and includes a top of the line fitness center and cafeteria. Management encourages you to get certifications and then follows through with support giving you time off to study for the certifications, without taking PTO away. The employees are extremely friendly and it is easy to feel a sense of community. Salary is competitive and the benefit package is great.

I was the one to make sure the Al a cart Restaurant was clean and neat when the Employees entered for lunch Monday - Friday.
I was the cashier that checked them out. I am a Team player and worked well with my co-workers. I found it hard to decorate the dining room to my bosses liking while I was to wait on customers most of the time. I enjoyed that fact I was with people all day.
