Clinical positions (RNs, MHTs, therapists of all kinds) are chronically understaffed; e.g., sometimes only 1 RN and 1 MHT for 20 patients, though usually there are 2 of each. One therapist and one caseworker for 15-20 patients. As a therapist, I do two groups a day, with as many as 15 patients in each. Paperwork requirements are extreme. There is no time for individual therapy. It is not rare for a therapist to work 10 hrs. or more in a day. If the patient census drops, staff are required to take off unpaid days. A good thing about a clinical job is one’s colleagues are usually mutually supportive, and department management is supportive. This facility is owned by a large, very profit-driven publically-traded corporation, so many important decisions are out of the hands of local management. Mostly because of the understaffing, patients do not always receive the individual care they need. Everyone is under too much pressure to get the paperwork done.

A typical day at work involves conducting two therapy groups (typically one process and one psychoeducational) for between 10-16 participants, and completing documentation for all patients on the unit (up to 20 individuals).  In addition to group therapy, therapists will conduct assessments on newly admitted patients (sometimes as many as 4-5 per day), prepare treatment plans, and conduct family sessions.  Documentation demands can be very heavy, and completing paperwork within legally required time frames can be difficult.  It is not uncommon for full-time therapists to work 70 hours per week.  Units are thinly staffed and therapists are overworked and undersupported by the administration.  The best part of the job is being able to make a difference in people's lives.

Schedule was flexible. Could set time I came in and departed. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of support from management team. I got written up because I filed a police report against a patient for assault. Was electrocuted twice and nothing was done to fix the problem. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Chaotic. Management did not support the workers. Constantly loosing staff due to ineffective leadership. Staff not recognized their roles in keeping the facility running. A lot of favoritism going on. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Came in. Did my job and came home. Very little interaction amongst the hospital staff.

The typical day depends on which role/department I was working in: Intake/Admissions , Charge Nurse on the PICU (psychiatric intensive care unit), or as supplemental nursing supervisor.  I learned about the challenges of being the nursing supervisor, how to manage unexpected staffing shortages, and use employees weaknesses as educational opportunities.  The hardest part of the job was the staff turnover; it seemed like once a great rapport was established, the person left shortly after that.  The most enjoyable job was the positive atmosphere and professional for psychiatric patients.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Hard to find something good other than many patients needing help. Leadership is disingenuous, tyrannical, cold, and flat out manipulative. Unethical. This company will work you until you are sick on FMLA. Money driven company that does not appreciate it's workers. Many facades you won't see until after your 90 days. Be careful.

High level of mistreatment and pressure from leadership. A lot of gossip and negativity from co-workers. No boundaries, will contact you on your off time.

Chaos from start to finish.

it first starts with management unorganized, it's not about your skill its generally about "who you know". the  nurses  lack knowledge and it makes me question are you truly licensed. The CNO.. lacks professionalism for a better choice of words to choose from. the job  is pressured for the MHT's. Poorly staffed. Overworked and underpaid. This job puts you in harm's way of psychotic patients. The security is lazy. When do you find them less lone see them. The CEO of this company should be more involved.Maybe the employees wouldn't just quit with out notice.This company is greedy for insurance money.Worst place ever!!!!

I have worked for many years but this place is not employee friendly. You accept a full-time position and never make 40 hours. You get flexed when patient count is low and sometimes high. You see large amounts of patients a day and practically have to beg for a lunch break. Seldom never any down time to gather your thoughts. Management is a joke, only worry about numbers. Micro-management, Low pay even with several degrees, tons of paperwork, no EMR system, horrible health insurance, no pay for holidays unless you work them (only management). I got good experience working with patients.

Assisting patients and helping them to meet their goals and to keep them safe.

Dealing with upper management and some of the nurses

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
They were always short of staff which can put the staff and residents in danger. They show favoritism to certain staff.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It can be very stressful depending which staff you are working with.

While working there I went through several administrators and Director of Nurses.There was no consistency in staff or supervisors.   On adolescent unit there was only one RN and ddepending on the census one or two mental health workers.So the RN was never relieved for a coffee break or lunch break. The RN was responsible for new admissions,implementing care plans and documentation and administer of medications to all of the patients in a 8 hour day.

West Oaks is toxic work environment. The CNO is a disgusting human being. He has no respect for anyone at all and feel like he’s a god. Management allows him to treat and talk to his staff any kind of way.  If they(CNO & his posses) don’t like you, they will force you to quit. For example if you’re a full time staff you’re supposed to work 40 hrs a week. They flex you 3 of those days and call a PRN to fill in or even 
give OT  to a full time staff. Just out is pite and when you try and speak up. Everyone will act like they don’t know what you’re talking about.
