It was a great place to have worked for almost five years. I enjoyed every moment of working there. It is a fast paced environment. Patients come and go on a daily basis, but, my unit had some patients for months at a stretch. This way, we became very familiar with them and their families.
WCMC has some of the best known and well established doctors in the medical field.
Every June, it gets a batch of 30-35 new resident doctors form all over the world. These are youngsters, just out of school and have not treated patients on their own.
Every month, they have to take turns, as covering doctors. A covering doctor is responsible for the safety and upkeep of 60 to 70 patients every night. One batch covers from 5 PM to 9 PM and the other batch from 9 PM to 7 AM next morning. They are always on their toes, running from one floor to another. It is wonderful to watch how they become experts in a matter of a year. They have a second year resident mentoring them.
Being doctors, they are very smart and capable and in a year's time, become mentors to the new batch of coming in residents. The second year mentor has a very tough job of overseeing 1st year's totally inexperienced residents, in making sure they do not commit errors in jeopardizing a patient's life. It is when they really become responsible and thus gain valuable experience.
My hardest part was to locate these 1st year residents, when a nurse is having issues with one of her patients on our floor. These doctors were already struggling with another patient on another floor and get so overwhelmed, they cannot reach a phone to call us back soon enough.
The most enjoyable part of my job was that I was able to serve everyone, the patients, nurses, doctors and the family members, in whatever capacity I could. It gave me tremendous job satisfaction. Everyone co-operated with each other to the fullest. I could not have asked for more. The whole year, I never called in sick and did not even take my vacation. Still had a couple of unused personal days left over. I was so happy to be at work.
The best thing I learned was the importance of time. In medical field of patient care, nothing is postponed. Everyone has to do one's part on a priority basis.

Administration in this hospital is atrocious. The norm is to understaff units to make the nurses look busier at the cost of them being able to provide adequate patient care. They will float pediatric nurses to the adult hospital as support and leave the children's hospital with severely inadequate staff. They were bad before but covid really brought out the worst. No metal detectors or bag searches, families have brought weapons in before and nurses and staff have been threatened, security does not make you feel safe (as they're on the phone or sleeping at their posts). Your job as a nurse is half nursing care and half answering phones, calling the kitchen when trays are late or missing (at every meal)/the wrong food is delivered (at every meal)/the unit is not stocked and you're getting yelled at by parents because there is no milk or juice for their child, putting in work orders for broken equipment and various things in patient rooms and the nurses station, calling the understaffed pharmacy about late or missing meds, amongst many other things because unit clerks are overworked and have to cover multiple units. You will routinely have more patients than is safe and will not be able to provide adequate education or support because of this. Admin will demean you and supervision wont help (largely because they are also understaffed, but also because they have to do admin's bidding). They will make you enforce harsh policies and then swoop in when parents know the right people to call, and drop the policies for that patient only, and then leave so that the nurse has to deal with all of the other families who now want that same special treatment. They have lost a lot of staff because of how they were treated during covid and nothing has improved. No one has your back, except for your peers, but they are drowning as well. This place goes through cycles of terribleness and then eventually recovers to a tolerable level, but this is the lowest point I've witnessed and there are no signs of improvement in the near future. It is a miserable place to work and your license will be put at risk daily because of the unsafe situations you are constantly in. And don't expect anything for nurses week. Coloring books and crayons last year. Nothing this year. No hazard pay, citing that the nurses are recognized enough.

• Conduct interviews with incoming patient or their representatives in order to obtain identifying information, the name of their attending physician, the type and amount of insurance coverage, and to secure guarantees for payment of bills
• Enter patient information into an automated SMS system, including financial insurance and other data
• Secure the signature of the patient or representative for the release of information to the insurance company, the assignment of insurance benefit to the hospital, the authorization of patient to receive treatment and any additional permits or consents
• Prepare patients identification charge plate and wristband
• Provide patients with information and responds to inquiries regarding available service visiting hours, hospital regulations and bill paying procedures
• Assign patients to or unit based on nature of illness and types of accommodations available or requested, collaborating with Nursing and Infection Control to facilitate patient placement
• Provide information to various divisions on patient status and insurance coverage when care received in more than one division
• Route admitting forms and cards and distributes daily census information to appropriate hospital divisions
• Convert routine patient information obtained from record and reports into pre-established codes for data processing by use of data entry equipment
• Provide assistance and coverage for the Emergency Room, Ambulatory Care, Registration Desks and Information Desks in such areas as patient reception, maintenance of log book, initiation of admissions process and maintenance of statistics
• Collect and secure patient valuable/deposits and issue receipt to patient
• Perform related clerical task required for efficient and effective admission of patients
• Use computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheet, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments
• Access protected information in accordance with departmental assignments and guidelines defining levels of access

I am an administrative assistant for a parking company contracted with Westchester Medical Center. When I arrive at work, I begin gathering up reports on revenue made the previous day. I verify that all cashiers' intake of money and cash reports are accurate and log them into a data base to then be faxed out to corporate. In the midst of this, I am answering phone calls, responding to emails from clients, and provide customer service to any customers who enter my office. I also log in monthly payments that are made by employees of the hospital. Toward the end of my shift, I usually stock up any reports and materials needed for my office or cashiers outside for the following day.
    The most important thing I've learned here is communication skills. Between constant direct contact with everyday customers and clients of the company, I have learned a great deal of communication skills. I've learned to speak deliberately and effectively along with maintaining organizational skills in an often fast paced environment. 
     Management at my company are great people. However, I believe they can make some improvements in everyday operations as well as employee appreciation.
     I absolutely love my co workers. Our office is relatively small so I'm pretty fortunate to be paired up with three lovely dedicated women. It makes the day go that much smoother!
     The hardest part of my job would probably be dealing with Long term patients who come to buy monthly parking passes. We may deal with families who are angry, sad, sometimes in tears for whatever reason they have being at the hospital. They tend to come down and vent to us about what's going on with them or their loved ones and our costs and policy can be sometimes inconvenient so its important to show compassion while still enforcing the policy despite how much I may disagree with it.
    The most enjoyable part is my co-workers. We exercise great team work and I can say Iv'e met some long term friends here.

There is one thing that you CAN predict about working in the Healthcare field-it’s anything BUT 
predictable! A locked unit,such as I work in,does have a “predictable” schedule. Or at least we TRY to- the inevitable worker “callouts”,the patient who becomes ill and needs to make an emergency run next door( the hospital), unexpected visitors who received “special permission “ from their social worker-who just happens to be off this day. 
It all adds up to a rather unusual “stew” that we are charged with monitoring so that it doesn’t boil over(or blow up in our faces). Need more? I don’t!
I have learned a lot about myself-and my ability to be a positive role model for those patients I care for ,away from home and usually not happy about it.
I’ve also learned how little I care for the staffers who could just as easily be stocking cans at the local grocery store. Not that anything’s wrong with that-I did it myself for some years early on.
However,when someone looks at a paycheck as the primary reason for them to go to school work,looking at their job as something mostly irrelevant to them and not worthy of their time..
It’s not just unprofessional,it can border on neglect. Not the industries finest moment in my opinion-and it’s an industry-WIDE concern!
The hardest part,though,is sometimes feeling helpless especially when dealing with a client who may have been abandoned by remaining family members. Nor can we help those single mothers caught in the throes of addiction,who think less about a coming birth than their next fix.
Closing on a positive note, there is nothing quite like having a client who struggled fiercely in their early placement,only to come to you as they leave for home and say “Thank you for everything-I really appreciate it” and mean it.

It’s makes it all worthwhile.

Worked with 4 other people in the  Medical Records Call Center. We all helped each other and became a close community. But as a contract employee your expected to produce the same amount of work for about 1/3rd the pay of the salaried employees who have been there 20 to 30 years. That can create a certain kind of distrust and critical mindset between employees who are serving the same public. There is little respect with Hierarchy mentality. 

So if patients come after the permanent employees leave, the contractors that believe in serving the public stay the extra few minutes or even half an hour to make sure the patient family member gets those records in their hands. THAT'S A MINDSET THAT CARES ABOUT PROVIDING CARING MEDICAL SERVICE.

However the contractors have their managers and supervisors who WILL NOT stay behind to print charts OR WAIT ON PATIENTS to collect a payment WHO GET CAUGHT IN TRAFFIC ON OUR BUSY NY HIGHWAYS and will chastise their CONTRACT employees for costing them more money because you clocked out later. It is very discouraging to work in an environment when your manager won't say behind to finish a service so you can go home. WE ALL WANT TO GET HOME TO OUR FAMILIES AT THE END OF THE DAY. Any one of us could be on the other end of that situation. 


The medical industry serves an important part of humanity. In Westchester we have lost a few good ones. BUT NOW IT IS NOT ABOUT HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN WE SERVE? IT ABOUT CAN WE MAKE A PROFIT? SOMEWHERE WE HAVE LOST OUR HEART. THAT IS GOING TO COST US OUR SOULS.

Initially receive report from Charge Nurse from previous shift . Make assignments . Take report on patients that are assigned to me. while taking care of patients make sure that scheduling is done do QI for the unit , audits , and make sure staff does not need help .

Management is a very important part of nursing and that if done well can be very effective, respecting your staff  as well as being respected  is probably the  most important part of being a manager

I have learned that multitasking is very important and you wear many hats as a charge nurse .Working in the ED you have to multitask and to be an effective nurse and provide the best care for your patients you have to be able to use critical thinking skills fast and sometimes without even realizing you doing it .

The hardest part of the job is not being able to provide the best care for your patients because you are so overwhelmed and overworked that you don't spend as much time with your patients as you would like to .Is having to not show your emotions and sometimes having patients  think that you are cold and unfeeling because we are not able or can't show what we are feeling .
Despite all the busyness and sometimes the ugliness I see during my shift I love the patients , I love making them feel better , or having them open up about their illness ,its not just patients  family members come in with their loved ones stressed and scared and just one kind word or just listening to them helps them . That is the best part of my job

Working at this organization, I have learned that corruption is still very rampant in healthcare. Promotions are not constituted by experience or hard work, but by personal relationships. Labor Relations is ultimately controlled by the leadership team so you will never truly have a fair case. Thankfully, this hasn’t happened to me but I have seen it with at least 5 others. The hardest part of working here is giving your very best everyday and watching others be praised for having a nice smile but not actually contributing to operational solutions. Managers and directors will set you up for failure if they don’t like you by not training you and hiding information from you. They will punish you for asking for support or for giving your opinion/suggestions that contribute to operational solutions. The regional director does not care about the staff. Unfortunately,  leadership does not have an open mind about diverse ideas and therefore doesn’t solve fundamental issues. If you want to have zero work life balance: then work here (you’re never really on vacation). If you don’t want to be overly stressed about issues that leadership refuses to address, and worry about losing your job because someone just didn’t like you as a cup of tea: don’t work here. They will really force labor relations to fire you.

Working at Westchester Medical Center has been a wonderful versitle experience. I have the privilage to say that as a Clerk I have worked in every Unit/ Department with in the hospital and their Outpatient Department.I truly believe this is one of the best specialty hospitals in the area.  Beautiful hospital, good customer service and reassuring doctors and nurses. The hospital is extremely clean and  staff members are efficient and capable.. Very professional staff !

A typicall day for me in Westechester Medical Center. I am the Clerk for the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. Working in the PACU is very fast paced and we have to be attentive to the patients recovery. 

As a ward clerk I transcribes a completed form and enters data into the patient's file. I have common knowledge of  medical terminology, abbreviations, and different types of medications to accurately process patient records. When an patient is discharged, I record the date and time of dismissal and pass on information to medical billing and coding specialists.
I have great  are very knowledgeable about the layout of the hospital or wing. I  keep track of vacant examining rooms so new patients can be quickly moved to appropriate areas in the hospital, allowing doctors and nurses to be more efficient in their rounds. Clerks process medical history and insurance forms filled out by patients or their guardians upon admittance into the hospital, and create both paper and electronic patient files
