Worked for 5 years in same entry level position. All though there is a high turnover in the company with a lot of internal hires, the management is terrible, very micromanaged. If you question or have an opinion about anything, then you are labeled as a trouble maker and will be black listed. They like to mold people to walk and talk in a "yes sir/no sir" kind of mentality. They will hire and promote people even if they aren't qualified. They will also award bad behavior among associates, even if its at the expense of someone else. 

Associates are also very Catty. There where a few that where good to me, but it was all about the bottom line of getting ahead. While there is a strong emphasis on being professional at all times in appearance and work, it only applies to a select few. They often held me to a much higher standard while others where allowed to exhibit child like and often immature behavior.  It also lacks diversity in ideas and associates (ethnicity), everybody has to be the same. You'll stand out like a sore thumb if you look, talk, and walk differently. If someone doesn't like it, you won't last long. You'll be lucky to even get hired, it helps to know someone already working there because they like to hire peoples friends and family members.

Like working here, lots of support and training opportunities and strong pathways built for advancement and long term employment prospects. Takes a long time to replace management when someone leaves on the two week standard notification though. Has been a bit of an upheaval and shift from very flexible WFH options to office only unless prior approval days in advance. Some micromanagement issues that seem unorthodox or unreliable as passive metrics for tracking work time. Overall not really a gripe, more of an annoyance at worst. It's a great company and I feel trusted and valued and can absolutely confirm that employees are given vast resources and many many opportunities to gather new skills, learn new things, and request additional or alternative projects to expand work experience. Lots of people here with 20+ years and eyeing retirement (for the higher pension). Yeah, I said pension, which is not a common benefit these days outside of government. Other benefits are better than it looks on paper. Will be needing influx of younger talent as aging workforce starts to retire en masse.

I love the people I work with daily!  My coworkers and managers are pleasant, smart, and always willing to help.  Upper management is stuck in a "this is how it has always been done" loop.  This mentality shows up in vendor selection, employee retention, and culture.  The company uses inferior vendors/products if there is a prior relationship, retains employees/vendors that are not able to do/willing to do thier jobs, and has lost great employees due to a lack of flexibility and career advancement (reasons for leaving are based on conversations with only close coworkers, so take these with a grain of salt).  This is a well established company with many great benefits and work environment, but it is a full time on-site workplace with a business professional work attire policy (suit and tie every day).  It also still offers a pension, though I am too young to speak to the quality of the pension.  Womens health benefit coverage could also be better.  For all it's faults, this is a great company to work for day-to-day and I would recommend it to others.

The CRC is, what I like to call, a call center on steroids. You are dealing with customers who have issues and do not want to help themselves, and when something goes wrong, that's when they call home office. You are constantly trying to resolve problems that you didn't create but still trying to get the angry customer to purchase addition coverage with you. 
But that, a person can almost manage on a daily basis. What becomes difficult is when every action you take is being watched like a hawk and then critiqued. Using the restroom is considered unproductive and hurts your stats, keeping you from ever going above and beyond. You can work 7-10 hours of overtime a week, but if you are more than 2 minutes late, you get an occurrence, which is treated like original sin in that department.
If you need off and you give them 2 months notice, you still might not get the day off no matter how important it is, leading the associate to take, yet another, occurrence.
If you like extreme micromanagement, this is the place for you!

My typical day at Western & Southern is many meetings driven by collaboration to move towards different ways of thinking, executing a strategy, and making change within the environment.  The easiest part of the job for me is partnering with my peers and team to make better, more informed decisions and motivating one another to think differently for the greater good of the organization. The hardest part of the job, however, is driving the senior leadership within the organization to make the right decisions holistically across core business unit lines, based on conversations around benefits, risks and costs to the organizations regarding the decisions we make.  It's tough getting people to think broadly outside of what they are directly responsible for.

Great company to work for that has been around over 127 years. Typical day of work would be make telephone calls to client to assist with a review of their coverage, assist them with to find an a common goal to get them from their current situations to their desired situations. Also look into details of assisting them with their retirement options as well. Being a senior sales representative, I've taken on additional roles to assist the Assistant Managers (on the job coaching and assisting, Call monitors, and feedback). I love to help people out, being our customers or our employees, I want to make sure everyone is taken care of, and learning what I can do next to better myself and the company. The hardest part of my job would be that the calls are made on a outbound call system, so it can be a challenge to reach our clients at the perfect time to talk with them.

If you have to work there for school, get in, get your certifications and get out. Their plan is to “churn and burn” you which is why turnover is so high. They will bring you in off the street and have you sell to friends and family while calling it your “personal market.” They will not have your back, you will not have tools to succeed and they’ll give you just enough commission from YOUR sales to barely get by. They don’t want you to succeed, when you do end up leaving the company what they want is your book and some new kid in your position will call whoever you do business with every year to try and push more W&S products on them, the cycle will continue. By the end of it you won’t even have your series 7 or 66, you’ll only have your 6 and 63 which isn’t as marketable if you wanna be in Finance long term. Don’t work here unless you’re a sleazy car salesman, it’s not a moral company.

The company its self is a great company to work for but I would not recommend working in the call center due to the lack of concern for the employee having to take these calls, you only receive a forty- five minute lunch, they will say in the interview you get thirty minute personal time but when you actually work for them they don't want you using that time would rather you reframe  from using.  It is a very strict place to work such as being a few seconds late to you station and then there are so many responsibilities they put on you, it makes you feel they want you to fail, many people have relocated to a different part of the company and yes you could move up and in a different department but getting there is no joke, the pay is fine but I learned from working in THIS call center money isn't everything.

Tried to be a good team member. It became clear that some teammates valued themselves and their ideas well above others. There were personnel concerns not uncommon in other workplaces. Would have liked to have been instrumental in bringing positive changes to the department, but knew my ideas would have ostracized me even more than I already was. Felt much condescension from certain teammates. Western and Southern is a great company with very many good and kind employees. It offers fair compensation and great benefits. If you can find a place there where you fit, you can build a good career and hopefully enjoy a long, healthy retirement.

Direct managers are great. The company is dated and not willing to change. Lot of people are leaving and they are either not filling their roles leaving heavy workloads for other employees or turn down candidates becauSe they are not willing to be flexible to employee needs or wants. This leaves roles open for a long time. The people are great but when management makes a choice get on board or leave. They pride themselves on retiring with them but have changed the pension plans multiple times so for those starting their career probably won’t have that pension they speak so highly of. Real slow career progression and perception is huge for the company. Drink the koolaid and live “the culture” you are fine. Benefits are great, just don’t go to the ER unless you are dying.
