Wilson Medical Center is a small community hospital with a staff of committed employees that are very proud and conscientious regarding the healthcare of their community.  I was recruited by this hospital to create a float pool for the nursing department to help facilitate the staffing of the hospital during high census and as the hospital was growing in its services.  

From the moment that I walked into this facility, the warmth of the employee team from housekeeper to administration was evident of quality customer service.  I accepted the position as a two year assignment that was offered with the understanding that once the program was in place, I had the option of staying or leaving.  I chose to leave when the program was well established and I felt the new manager was very capable of continuing successfully.

I enjoyed the time I was with this facility. However, this was a 100 mile round trip each day and the drive was becoming more difficult for me due to my need for cataract surgery. The hospital was self-insured and I therefore would have to drop my current physicians and have the surgery there to have insured coverage.  So with that in mind and after so many years of working with my physicians, I opted to take retirement when the program was stable.  I have since had my surgery and my vision is now beyond my greatest expectations.  

I am a young at heart retiree that enjoys projects and details that help others to understand issues and how to resolve problems.  Through my work with the education dept. at Wilson, I developed an  orientation program for new employees that was adopted by other departments in the hospital to assure employee understanding of the job and behavior expectations.

As with many hospitals, managers wear many "hats."  I was also in charge of the Bed Placement to facilitate efficient flow of patients from the emergency department to inpatient admission.  This became a project that later evolved into a Six Sigma project that continues to this day as improvement is recognized throughout the process. It is a challenging process and touches everyone from Physicians and staff to families.  Obviously, something that requires continual attention to detail.

I was also in charge of the morgue. This was truly a new experience for me as I was never aware of all the legal implications of a county morgue. When I assumed the role, it was not being well monitored. I simply implemented all the rules that were supposed to be followed and took away the many sets of keys that were "floating" around the hospital and EMS group. Housekeeping, maintenance and lab were all opening the door and allowing body drop-off/pick-up without signing in or out making it difficult to track coroner cases appropriately.  

All in all, I did a lot of walking, talking, teaching of staff and patients while monitoring my new staff or checking off skill competency.  I wrote the Standard of Care for the Clinical Resource Unit (float pool), interviewed staff nurses and nursing assistants for the pool and made rounds daily.  About once per month I tried to meet as many night or evening staff to remain visible and available to my staff.  Working with the other nurse managers was always a pleasure and I value their professional opinions and friendship to this day.

I work in a  ICU/intermediate unit  and many patients do not know this with their admission as well as what intermediate means,  also there is no reflection of this on the website for this hospital, it only mentions it is an ICU. Communication from management is lacking, and favoritism is shown  to  staff . A lot of staff turnover 
in the little 2 years I have been employed, over 27 RNs and this includes a 2nd nurse manager. Pay is not comparable to other hospitals, and they will only pay extra if you work your allotted hours only after you work those hours.  A productivity computer generated staffing tool identifies  staff needs, but this tool doesn't encompass the care these medical patients require; many times  you will be floated to other units due to call outs, or staff in hard to keep staff areas; many days, phones ringing constantly  due to you stuck in a room with care, difficulty locating equipment ( no wheelchairs at all), we have no ward clerks, and no  portable phones or pagers if you are stuck in a room; patient rooms do not have phones either. You also will be floated a lot to always understaffed or   to units of frequent call outs from  the same units all the time. When new staff  member arrive to  be introduced to staff for a potential hire  (they are being interviewed as a new hire,) it is a quick hello and  the  clinical bedside  staff are not involved in the hiring process, I guess the management doesn't want us to talk with them. 

Many great co-workers, but also some that are slack as in any job; the care  the slackers give or if you follow them, it would make you wonder, "would you want to be the recipient of the care they deliver."

The benefits are great, you only work 36 hours, and many  shifts are open due to high turnover.

Terrible place to work! All CNA I & II get treated like unfair! Most of the RN are lazy! All they do is give medication and sit down and talk and play computer games! Most of the time late night the CNA's are up working and the NURSES are sleeping! I have captured several pictures of charge nurses sleeping like a baby! CNA's can't get any help what so ever! The best nurses to ever come through and actually work and believe in helping were the TRAVEL NURSES! The 3rd floor(3west) and the 5th floor(5east) are the most terrible floors in the hospital! Turn over rate is very high on those floors they go thru managers and CNAs like crazy! And fire, suspend or discharge the CNAs for stupid things and dont realize that CNAs do majority of the work there! That hospital without great CNAs would be a tragic because we did all of patient care! I was a CNA who spoke up about things that wont right! I believe in defending myself! I was discharged for not being able to return to work when they needed me.  Medically my MD gave me restrictions but said I could return but they wouldn't allow me to come and help where I could help them because of tiny restrictions.  I was hurt on the job and denied workers compensation and after not being able to return so soon they sent me certified mail that I was no longer a employee.  They called me for everything else they could have called me to tell me I was no longer a employee instead of avoiding me and sending mail.  I was a very hard worker pulling and turning over 300lb patient alone asking for help and couldn't get it and this results in me getting hurt for not having help! I would not recommend anyone to work here! If you are not part if management or a RN you are nobody to them!

This place sets their employees up to fail. On med-Surg there are so many corners being cut, it is mind blowing. It is not the fault of the nurses or CNAs on the floor, it is upper management’s fault. This place does not have adequate training staff and the clinical educators are not stepping in to do anything about it. They are throwing new nurses out of training with full loads of patients and in some cases they have nurses on orientation taking full loads by themselves. This place has 2 med Surg floors but  not enough employees to staff them. If you stand up for yourself you are accused of insubordination. Supervisors and management like to threaten their nursing staff by saying they are going to report them to the board of nursing for the smallest issues. They also talk down to their staff. You are not allowed to have any work life balance because your schedule can be changed at anytime by management and you are expected to make arrangements or face the consequences. Instead of investing time in educating their staff properly they want to punish them. That’s why no one stay at Wilson Medical Center.  This place is terrible. The best part of my shift is clocking out.

I worked at this hospital for a good while. I will say that the benefits are good, I liked the fact that you can use your badge to pay for your food, although it can add up quick on your payroll. I wouldn't suggest doing it on a regular basis. Most of the people there are friendly and are willing to help you.
The downside? YOU WILL BE OVERWORKED!
The minimum amount of patients you will have will be 8. The norm is at least 12 patients. I have worked on a floor by myself with 21 patients. No other aides due to a holiday. You will be called CONSTANTLY while with other patients to tend to someone else, plus juggle vital signs, turns, charting, bathing and other various requests. There is favoritism in that place. Management will listen to your requests, but nothing will get done. There are lazy people who want to do the minimal amount of work possible and catch an attitude if you ask for help turning someone. They will write you up or fire you over minor things. The pay isn't very good. I would not EVER recommend working 3 West or 5 East. They are the worst floors! You will face burnout very quickly with this hospital!

Under-staffed primarily due to the disgustingly low wages they offer. This, in turn leads to the loyal employees they do have, being over worked and simply burnt out. Obtaining crucial supplies, equipment and repairs is like pulling teeth.  Unsafe patient equipment has been used because the hospital “doesn’t have any more money” according to Administration.  
I’ve foreseen many problems due to scheduling issues but no one listens until that day comes and then you’re expected to stay late to accommodate the schedule.  Complete and utter disregard and disrespect to the true healthcare heroes who have kept this hospital running.  If you have any other option, I do NOT recommend coming here as a patient nor for employment.

Guaranteed to be understaffed, told to cut corners, management sits in offices and has political answers for problems with absolutely no follow through.  Culture of the hospital declines by the day, the community is aware, most people in the community come to the hospital as a last resort or because the health insurance as a staff member only allows you to go to a DLP facility.  The hardest part of working at wilson medical is watching the continuous overturn of CEO, CNO, CFO, COO, Directors, House Supervisors.  Each overturn you have to unlearn everything you know, start over, and be drug through the trenches AGAIN AND AGAIN.  Policies are made at the drop of a hat, they are always vague so you cannot protect yourself with them but they WILL use them against you.  If you have the misfortune of dealing with human resources it will all speak for itself.   Enjoyable part of the job were the coworkers. 

More and more demand placed on staff without regard to requirements of staff and risk associated with patients.  Even for experienced nurses, the risk recognized by increasing patient loads and decreasing staff scheduled went unaddressed and frankly ignored.  Did not feel comfortable working in an environment that was willing to place the patients and staff in jeopardy of injury or neglect due to desire for more income.  In the time that I was there, it seemed that it was difficult to keep a manager in place as well which made it difficult as to what to expect as an employee regarding scheduling, expectations, who to see/call regarding concerns, etc.  The job was nothing like what I expected considering what I was told in my initial interview.

Wilson Medical as a company is a wonderful place to work. Hospice as a department is a hellish place to work. Manager is not a nice person. She is very mean and cruel to employees. There is very high turnover and she bullies employees into leaving. You will work very looonnnnng hours with little compensation. I was there for a few years and watched how she treated all employees. People are afraid of her. Employees try to avoid her at all costs. They stay away from her office, sneak up back stairs and hallways, and try not to talk to her at any means. The company is out of compliance with regulations as well. You will be walking into a mess. Be aware!

Night shift coworkers were the best! Team players, without them the whole experience would have been negative reviews.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nurse supervisor and unit manager are micromanagers. Management is so out of touch with what is going on and do not support staff.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful and toxic on most days. Shift wars. Management always ready to reprimand. Punitive environment and thinking, no true problem solving from management.
