Workiva

Workiva is all about a very open environment and letting people have fun as they write Agile code, but unfortunately your "manager" is really more of a counselor/buddy with no real power over you, leaving the hiring decisions up at a level that doesn't understand what the company needs.
In addition to this problem with priorities, there is a severe lack of communication between the small teams; it's not uncommon to have uncertainties about what team even is responsible for a particular feature and then find that the team listed has abandoned it. This stems from a very fast and loose approach to shuffling people between teams, projects between teams, and adding new projects.
The tools for coding are mostly top-notch. There's a little much devtool downtime because of so much stuff being in-house, but when it doesn't randomly stop working all day, the development process is extremely smooth with just a few hiccups from having to sometimes fight a little over who gets what testing servers.

At the end of the day, it's a decent place to work, but it has the sort of Google mindset where all that matters is new features, leading to half-baked projects and many devs relegated to trying to clean up the mess while management doesn't understand that it even is a mess, which can make it a bit hard to show you're worth it.

Started in 2008, Workiva (known as Webfilings to the customers) has had a very rough year.  Took over the SEC reporting market out of the gate, but has struggled to expand their brand to more profitable Enterprise markets.

-Small deals only available with customer base for large goals
-New VP of sales has installed new micro managing culture with sales force.  Uses bully tactics to belittle his reps, and he's always right even when he's wrong.  This VP overseas the Central, West, and, Mid Market, and Inside teams. 

-Existing customers love the product, and its very enjoyable to Demo.  However its very inexpensive and expansion deals are very small. 

-Difficult sales process with heavy micro management of open opportunities.  

-Reps have been layed off simply because they didn't "fit in"... meaning they just showed up, and did their work, and made their number.  You have to play the politics here very much.

-Most enjoyable part will likely be some of the great reps that work there who are really friendly.   There are good people there, but the leadership is where the problem is along with the go-to-market strategy with their product which isn't viable for large growth. 

-Please note that very few reps here are anywhere close to being at quote.  Some reps are as low as 10 to 15% ytd.

Workiva is a great place to work depending on your goals and objectives. It is a strong startup company that has the feel of a well-established Silicon Valley operation, and they truly value their employees. 

You should expect to be busy, all of the time. There is not a moment when you are no involved in a project or, when you are being pulled into something new. Your job description will change on a regular basis, but the work is rewarding, and, you will learn a great deal. 

The management here is very laid back, except in the sales department. The sales dept drives growth so that is understandable. I have not met anyone yet who doesn't like the work environment, and the benefits are generous. The CEO is a nice guy and actually values his employees. There are regular treats like days off and employee appreciation parties.

A day in the life at Workiva is not like any other.  The tasks may be standard of the employee's role; however, there is a constant sense of personal achievement and professional growth on a daily basis.  Management's ability to provide the employee with independence to create new processes and challenge ideas creates high levels of productivity and growth.  There really is no 'hard part' of the job as we can work remote, work outside on beautiful days, workout in their state-of-the-art workout facility at any point of the day, or dine in the amazing cafe.  The most enjoyable part of the job is that the CEO knows everyone's name.  It's no wonder Workiva has been named one of the Top 100 Places to work for the last 5 years.

Workiva was a great internship to have! 

At Workiva, bosses are flexible but require you do your work (and do it well) with that given flexibility. Most people are in by 8 for morning meetings and out by 4 or 5.

The workplace goes between either really relaxed or really stressed. Amenities like an in-house cafeteria, lounge room, game room, ability to bring pets to work and endless snacks/drinks let you know that management keeps the employee in mind continually. Also, the fact that co-workers have the ability to work with HR helps solve typical workplace issues easier than most jobs.

The people you work with (or go out of your way) to meet are what will make or break your experience at Workiva.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Overall the company is a great place to work. However, if you're a republican or have conservative values this may not be the place for you. The CEO injected his opinion of the 2020 election and who everyone should vote for in the middle of a company meeting. Not the best taste.

Ames campus culture:  generous canteen snacks & beverages, lounge and game areas, bring your dog to work, and trails.

Your job is always on the line and they let you know that there are dozens in line to take it. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It used to be more fun, collaborative, and creative. Then they started bringing in hatchet men and transferring jobs overseas. It changed things for the worse. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Managers pushing you to do more with less.

From day one I was treated as a full member of the team. The team was just as eager to learn from me as I was to learn from them. Workiva encouraged collaboration foremost; laptops and an open floor plan removed any barriers that might prevent individuals or teams from working together. A plethora of common areas and meeting rooms enhanced this environment further.

Workiva for the most part is a firm that is cashing in on a mandated SEC requirement.  Unfortunately, XBRL has never become relevant and is basically a check the box requirement of SEC filing.  As such, the pay and career aspects are severely limited.  They try to entice people with a fun work environment to entice people to leave their career aspirations on the floor.  They had a lack of development, training and resources.  Most of the foumders cashed out and left to find other endeavors.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Health Insurance is very comprehensive and PTO was gracious.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Culture was a positive, but changed since the company is trying to turn a profit now. Huge drive to develop efficiencies and embrace AI that are unrealistic in some areas.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Culture is shifting from employee focus to profit focus, therefore, cracking down on performance.
