I love the patients. I like my co-workers.
They make my job bearable. 

Management/leadership is low-quality and completely lack management education but the mutual alliances amongst them are *tight*. 

The department cannot function optimally because management with these loyalties make it impossible to express a concern about the favored ones. It even makes it difficult to suggest improvements. 

Employees who are dramatic and demand attention create a tense, strained environment but are coddled by leadership. Individuals in leadership positions regularly contradict the others’ instruction behind their backs. How a task is done is dependent upon who is present in the office at that moment.  The resultant level of tension in the department is mentally draining.

We are supposed to be given 15-minute breaks each day. We never get them. 

Pay is terrible. TERRIBLE. Raises are pitiful to nonexistent. Ppl have been here 8, 10 years with total raises amounting to under $1/hr. 

Earned time accrues slowly and aside from that, is used for holidays that we have to take. 

The hospital makes sure patient-facing areas mostly look good. The employee-facing areas are not attended to well. 

The hospital’s theme of  “Loving Kindness” does not extend to hourly-wage employees. 

Staff turn over especially for medical assistants is HUGE it'a lucky of they stay with the job for a year or more. What clinical staff that is still left to pick up the pieces that are a direct result of low staffing aren't compensated nearly enough. You are hired to work at a certain office but when a staffing shortage happens it's 'expected' that you 'WILL' go help other offices. There is no asking there is no would you be willing to help out over here for a day or two. It's this is where you are going and thats the end of it. Staff dynamics in individual offices are tense everyone acts like they're your best friend but have no problem putting a knife in your back if it saves themselves. Work tends to fall on one person in the offices and that person is expected to do everything while only working 8 hour days because overtime is not permitted. But when patients file complaints because this or that wasn't done or anything of the like it falls on the staff well why did this happen, why didn't it get done? Well if it wasn't just a single staff member doing all the work maybe it would have. 

Coworkers and patients are what keeps us going. Leadership is poor and are not properly educated for the roles but are placed through "who you know" and favoritism. York Hospital makes their own rules and hold grudges against staff who leave the organization instead of being professional about it. Place people on the "not eligible for rehire" for no good reason. Makes it feel like retaliation ( for leaving them) and discrimination (when staff may have been on a medical leave) and will not let them return! Extremely low pay compared to others with 1% raises every few years at best! No appreciation for the hard workers- they just get a heavier work load to pick up for low performers who are never held accountable. Everything they implement is strictly for show. They don't follow any JC type standards. Dirty carpets throughout. etc. 

I worked in a department where the leader of that department was not even my boss. Evaluations are based on what others say to your supervisor not on your actual performance. Managers are in charge of several departments and know very little about the departments they run. Managers and HR allow unacceptable employee behavior no matter how violent or offensive the act.

Expectations are unrealistic. Management wants staff to do 10 hours of work in 8. Not only is it impossible, in healthcare, it is dangerous.
There are no definitive job descriptions or guidelines.

I was truly lucky to be part of the only real team in the hospital. It was difficult working in three departments everyday but when it was required that I work in a fourth it was time to leave.

There is virtually NO room for advancement or to go to other departments.  They want "experience ", yet they don't GIVE it!  There isn't much offered for continuing education, and management has almost no idea what we do. How can my supervisor tell me what to do when she can't do it?  It's awkward to have more knowledge than the person who has authority over you. 
The majority of the staff go out of their way to give excellent care to the patients, and there is some fantastic teamwork at times. There are some top notch MD's there, and the patients (usually) seem very pleased with their care. 
The hospital could use some restructuring and make some changes; if they did, their P.G. scores would be amazing!  It's a quaint facility with great staff and A LOT of potential!

I greatly valued my time at York Hospital and initially envisioned staying through to retirement. However, in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, the work environment—particularly within the Imaging Department—underwent significant changes. Challenges such as low morale, a toxic culture, and a lack of consistent management support became increasingly difficult to navigate. In 2024, the arrival of a new director further impacted the department. Many experienced staff members chose to leave, citing concerns about the director’s leadership approach, which was often perceived as unapproachable and at times bullying. The resulting atmosphere of micromanagement made it difficult to feel supported or respected. After much reflection, I made the decision to pursue a work environment more aligned with my values.

Management does not care about you. You are just another body on the floor.
Between short staffing, demanding patients, and unsupportive management, this job made me M I S E R A B L E. It wouldn't have been quite as bad if the other nurses and NA's on my floor had my back. They were unkind, catty, and at times downright unapproachable-- kinda like the mean girls in high school that give you the side-eye for sitting near them at lunch. If you asked for help, they would just let you drown. There's also so much "homework" they give you with all the training modules they make you do in AND outside of work hours.

I was faced with ethical choices too. Things I learned to NEVER do during my training were EXPECTED of me during my shift. I often respectfully declined since, per the company's policy, I was not qualified to complete such tasks as they were not within my scope of practice.

I have been a YH employee for about 6 months now and I can tell you that although the hospital is changing with the times they are really trying to keep to their moto of "Loving Kindness". It is so nice to work for a company that values its employees, guarantees your employment in times of economic uncertainty, and at the same times continues to evolve with the everchanging healthcare industry. I would honestly recommend York Hospital to anyone looking for a career in a place where you are expected to work hard and be dedicated to the staff and patients but at the same time you are valued and rewarded for it. If you dedicate yourself to York Hospital they will dedicate themself to you in return and that is a hard thing to find these days.

I loved my job and coworkers at YH. I started as an OR buyer then transferred to the OR scheduler. I took a pay cut for the position. My skills as a buyer were being used without compensation. More and more responsibilities were being added without compensation, very stressful. COVID hit I was on medical leave per my physician who is a YH provider. I was then furloughed until 7/20. Got a call end of April to contact my physician to revisit medical leave.  Physician extended 8 more weeks. HR backed me into a corner gave me 2 weeks to return to work or be terminated.  I was terminated.  Devoted four years of exceptional service, never late and out sick maybe 4 times.  Culture is toxic.  

A typical work day starts at 8:00 am. I have been very fortunate to have been trained in house for my wonderful job. It is a very rewarding job to be able to make daily differences in patients lives.
We are a flat organization which means there is no middle management. We have leaders! We are all expected to work pretty independently. There are 8 of us that work in the Cardiology department. We work closely with 10 cardiologist within the York Hospital family. The most enjoyable part of my day is speaking to my patients. We have created a great relationship in the last 8 years. The hardest part of my job is learning that one of my patients has paced away.
