I am delighted to share my experience as a current employee of this outstanding call center. Having been part of this dynamic team for some time now, I can confidently say that this is an exceptional workplace that fosters personal and professional growth. I had the opportunity to work at Zinnia for about three years, first as onsite clinical at a facility level, then as a remote clinical employee. I feel I have a good sampling of the company, and have seen it change as it has grown. Here are my conclusions.

When I first started, I worked at onsite as a clinical therapist at one of the facilities doing direct patient care. The facility had a lot of autonomy, and the staff culture was one of family and teamwork. It worked well, and the facility was very successful. I had a wonderful supervisor who did a great job of making me feel supported and empowered, and always had my back. This experience here really helped me to grow into a well-rounded and competent therapist, and I will forever miss that time. My time here was fast paced and challenging, but in a way that promoted healthy professional growth. It was probably the healthiest culture I had worked in in a long time, especially given the tendency for behavioral health facilities to simply be insurance mills. This place was different, and the feedback we received from our patients was indicative of this as well. Things went like this for about two years.

After this period, the upper management of Zinnia began to involve themselves more and more in daily operations at the facility levels, and in doing so, began implementing a top-down approach to operations, which eventually began to introduce a new cultural element. Facility census began to increase, while staff began to be disempowered in their ability to set facility level culture. That might not have been so bad, however the pervading culture within upper management tends to be very toxic. There is a pervasive narcissism that exists within upper management, that is observed so frequently, that it has become a byword amongst staff. Ambition tends to be rewarded, often at the expense of culture and best patient care and practice. There have been many times when I have heard about times when upper management has been flat out abusive toward middle management, which has included yelling and belittling, which in my mind, has no place in a civilized professional setting.

It is easy to exist in the realm of ideals, and we like to think that a company exists to simply make the world a better place for those that it serves, but that is not reality. Companies exist to make money, and that's OK. And if a company is successful, and the employees are well compensated while patients are well cared for, then wonderful. But what has been occurring with Zinnia is a slipping away from core values, and this should be very concerning.

All in all, my time with Zinnia was a very positive experience for me, but I am convinced that my experience is no longer available for anyone that might come on board now. This makes me sad, as I would have been loyal to the hilt to this organization for life if it had remained true to its values while it continued to grow.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Having the opportunity to work and help residents/ patients who are fighting for their life and who are taking  the first steps in a long journey ahead. That is the only thing. I think favoritism, social status, looks, mean girls club,lies, no communication, and more than what I'm sure anyone thinks they are signing up for.  If you want to treat your residents good and make them a priority, then it starts with the staff. It's a trickle affect. Humans thrive when they feel supported, appreciated, not judged... The list goes on. Be weary of some recovery places, for some reason they lie and are deceitful to get ppl to come into their treatment center. Everything comes out in the wash, and money & control never really makes anyone happy...for long.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No one knew what they were supposed to do and not knowing if you were going to get the hours you signed up for to survive.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Clique, poor management, supervision. Cold, uninviting.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Never knew until I got there and it wasn't what I was told my job was going to be at all, behavioral health tech...nope, painter and cleaning lady.

A typical day at work is exciting, fun and productive. The people that work at this company are great and friendly. The management provided me with ample training and attention so that there were no questions regarding the expectations for my jobs duties. Also, I was given the resources needed to achieve the expectations. I was hired in a management role and all of the managers that I have been trained by and worked with have been incredibly inviting, helpful and available. The culture of Zinnia is great. Positive attitudes, striving for improvement and growth, integrity are all part of the values of the company that translate well into the culture. The hardest part of the job in my opinion is the pressure to perform. Within management - metrics are used to gauge performance and make adjustments if needed. There is a feeling of being easily replaced because of how big Zinnia is. I feel as though making sure you can present your skills and values on a regular basis to avoid being let go is important. The most enjoyable parts of the job are the company culture and the employees who strive to participate in that culture :)  

This company will help you grow tremendously. They will give you new responsibilities but will not compensate with pay. They will only give you a raise if you ask, and it can take well over half a year to even hear an answer. Management for the most part is great. Upper management is where it gets tricky, they aren't around and don't know you or what effort you actually put in. You will be over worked. You will be stressed. And you're not always going to feel respected working there. But the people who work there are amazing, supportive, and a good group who care about you. They have benefits and PTO but sick days run out and are never resets even after a year so use them sparingly. You will have to work holidays and it's just "another day" so you don't get paid extra. Insurance can be paid for but the deductibles and oop is way too high so you'll never meet it with what you're making. At the end of the day it is about money. If you are looking to grow and get experience this is a great opportunity but if you are looking to financially support yourself this isn't the move. 

A shady, mis-managed operation at best. 

The fact that this place charges taxpayers like $4,000+ per day for "healthcare" that is basically cafeteria food, shared bedrooms and either group meetings or smoke breaks kinda disgusted me.

It also became obvious that the reason this place pays so badly for most positions that don't require a degree is because they count on hiring and underpaying the clients who go thru the program who they know will struggle to get hired elsewhere.

The average cashier at a convenience store in this area gets paid several dollars more per hour than most of the people providing this "healthcare".

When I asked the clients if they had been thru this program, in this actual building before, 8 out 10 said yes. That's some success rate!

Once you realize this run down old building, a mismanaged bed n breakfast at best, was making like 100k a day while paying you and everyone else peanuts, you understand why coworkers suddenly leave without notice.

Upper management does not care about their employees. They do not like when you advocate or speak up for yourself. If you do so, they will retaliate against you. They overwork and underpay their employees horribly. They constantly put extra work on you and they do not give raises. If you ask for a raise after being given more responsibility, they manipulate you into thinking it is undeserved. You get no time off and no work life balance. You work well over 40 hours a week and are not compensated. They overwhelm you with work, provide unrealistic deadlines and expectations, then get mad when things cannot get done on time. They only care about the money, not the clients we serve. A truly shady company with shady upper management. Would not recommend working here. It is a company that doesn't know what "team work" means and has an "every man for himself" mentality. I truly believe they will never get it together. 

A typical day of work starts with me coming in early to greet my co-workers that are both arriving and the ones that are leaving for shift change. I have learned so much by trying to improve 1% everyday! The management never talks down to me and is always willing to help me in any aspects that I have questions with. The culture is shared by everybody here in that we all want to get clients the help they need and deserve, even if I'm just a small part of that. Probably the hardest part of the job is when I see a client struggling with the same things I used to struggle with and they think all is lost. I really try to get my point accross, but it's not always the result I want. Far and away the most enjoyable part of the job is when I see a client fight through their fear, take the suggestions given and are on the road to recovery!

Honestly this company used to be great. I thought that I would work here forever. Unfortunately they grew too fast and the core values did not scale. There used to be a family atmosphere amongst staff but that changed. They did away with middle management and brought in these incompetent VPs who do not care about the company. Then they fired them all but the damage was already done. The culture is unstable and there is not enough staff. They don't care about the people who started their facilities and there is too much interference from the outside. They are constantly trying to make changes. They have a whole department with titles of change director, VP of changes, culture changer.. like how much change does a company not even 3 years old need? Human Resources is non-existent at the facility level and changed a dozen time in 3 years. People do not feel safe and taken care up. As a health care worker taking care of patients that's really important.

Zinnia is a great company run by great people. Sometimes its easy to get lost in a big pond when you are used to a small pond. So coming into a company like this without experience can be difficult. Training and processes are solid. Issues tend to rise with changes and multiple platforms of communication to deliver this information. Making sure that everyone is on the same page. Lots of oppurtunty for growth. Work hard and you will be fine. Pressure culture with reasonable but high expectations. However there is a consistent effort to counter this pressure culture. teamwork is championed and solution focused thinking, positive attitude are winning skills in the call center environment.
