Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and stepdown care to join our dynamic healthcare team. The ideal candidate will provide comprehensive nursing care to patients transitioning from intensive care to less acute settings, ensuring optimal recovery and safety. This role demands a professional with extensive clinical expertise, excellent patient assessment skills, and a commitment to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care. The RN will utilize advanced nursing techniques and EMR/EHR systems to document patient progress accurately while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to meet individualized patient needs.

Key Responsibilities

- Monitor and manage patients in the PCU.

- Administer medications and treatments.

- Operate monitoring equipment.

- Document care in EHR systems like Epic.

- Collaborate with healthcare teams.

- Educate patients on recovery plans.

Duties

Perform thorough patient assessments, including vital signs, physical examinations, and physiological evaluations, to determine current health status and identify potential complications.
Administer medications and treatments precisely, including IV infusions, injections, suturing, and specialized procedures such as catheterization and tube feeding.
Monitor patients continuously using telemetry systems and respond swiftly to critical changes in condition, including acute pain management and airway management.
Document all patient interactions, treatments, and assessments accurately within electronic health records (EHR/EMR systems), ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Collaborate with physicians, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans aligned with best practices.
Assist in diagnostic evaluations such as laboratory testing, specimen collection/processing, and imaging procedures like sonography or mammography when necessary.
Provide education to patients and families regarding treatment plans, medication administration, discharge instructions, and health coaching.
Maintain sterile techniques during procedures such as sterile processing or invasive interventions; ensure infection control protocols are followed meticulously.
Support patients across diverse settings including hospital medicine units, outpatient clinics, hospice & palliative care services, or long-term care facilities.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives by adhering to NCQA standards and ICD coding guidelines for accurate documentation.

Skills

Extensive experience working with electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Cerner or Athenahealth; proficiency in medical documentation is essential.
Strong knowledge of medical terminology, physiology, anatomy, and pharmacology relevant to acute care environments.
Demonstrated competence in critical care procedures including ventilator management, trauma medicine protocols (Level I & II trauma center experience), ICU experience, and infectious disease care.
Skilled in performing advanced nursing interventions such as ostomy care, NG tube management, NG lavage, gastric lavage, or neonatal resuscitation procedures.
Proficiency in various clinical skills including phlebotomy, venipuncture, IV insertion/infusion techniques, catheter care/catheterization procedures.
Familiarity with ICD-9/ICD-10 coding standards for accurate medical records documentation; experience with CPT coding is advantageous.
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams across diverse specialties such as geriatrics, pediatrics (including neonatal ventilator management), behavioral health, or occupational health settings.
Knowledge of Workers' Compensation law related to occupational injuries; experience managing cases involving disability or long-term disability claims is preferred.
Excellent communication skills for triage assessments and patient education; capacity to handle high-pressure situations calmly and efficiently.
