Full Job Description

The Educational Specialist II - Literacy is responsible for supporting secondary literacy (grades 9-12) within the Office of English Language Arts and Literacy. This role advances secondary literacy initiatives across Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools), including curriculum, assessment, and professional learning. The Educational Specialist assists in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of curriculum aligned with the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards and the City Schools Instructional Models for Literacy for grades 9-12. The position also collaborates with partners and vendors to identify high-quality instructional practices and resources, and to design professional learning opportunities that strengthen teaching and learning across the district.

Essential Functions

Supports the implementation of the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards for Literacy in grades 9-12.
Develops and delivers ongoing professional learning opportunities that promote evidence-based instructional practices in secondary literacy.
Supports the implementation of district curriculum and assessment programs for grades 9-12.
Analyzes and uses data to strategically support the instructional needs of teachers and school leaders.
Provides guidance and technical assistance to schools and school leaders on effective literacy practices and instructional strategies.
Collaborates with colleagues across departments and offices to advance high-quality teaching and learning throughout the district.
Remains current on research, trends, and best practices related to secondary literacy instruction, content, and pedagogy.
Utilizes resources appropriately to complete work in the most efficient manner; proactively communicates the status of work; participates and contributes fully as a team member; and exercises sound judgment and decision-making skills to resolve sensitive matters.
Maintains confidential and sensitive information.
Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies, administrative regulations, and professional standards.

Maximum Salary 161856.00

Minimum Salary 94735.00

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required from an accredited institute of higher education. A Master's degree is preferred.
Valid Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) license with an Advanced Professional Certificate.
Three years of teaching experience in secondary literacy, grades 9-12.
Three years of experience developing and delivering professional learning opportunities to teachers in urban school settings.
At least five years of relevant full-time professional experience.
Ability to interact with diverse constituencies and convey complicated information with tact and diplomacy.
Ability to exercise independent judgment.
Ability to work collaboratively.
Experience managing large-scale projects.
Knowledge of current research in secondary literacy best practices.
Knowledge of the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards for Literacy.
Ability to lead and motivate a productive team of individuals.
A commitment to educational equity.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proficient in the use of technical computer applications, including electronic databases, case management systems, and Microsoft Office, including Excel and PowerPoint.
Skill in research, presenting, and explaining policies and procedures, assembling data, preparing complex reports, and formulating and presenting recommendations.
Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with school system employees and managers at all levels, as well as government agencies and community stakeholders.
Ability to multitask, prioritize changing assignments, and organize a busy workload, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure, while exercising excellent attention to detail.
