Sous Chef

Location: Northern California Coast – Near Eureka, CA
Pay: $55,824.00 – $71,071.20 per year, depending on experience

Job Summary

Ready to move beyond running a station and start running the kitchen?

A busy hospitality operation on California’s North Coast near Eureka is looking for a talented and dependable Sous Chef to take responsibility for the daily operation of its kitchen.

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who enjoys being in the middle of the action. You’ll coordinate daily production, lead the culinary team during service, maintain quality and consistency, and help ensure the kitchen is organized, prepared, and ready to deliver every day.

We welcome experienced Sous Chefs and other culinary professionals who have held similar leadership roles. We’re also interested in the motivated Lead Cook who has spent years developing their skills and is ready for the next step. If you have at least four years of Lead Cook experience, a strong work ethic, and the ability to lead others, this could be your opportunity to move into kitchen management.

What You'll Do

As Sous Chef, you will help keep the kitchen running smoothly from preparation through service. Responsibilities include:

Oversee daily kitchen operations and food production
Direct and coordinate culinary staff during assigned shifts
Ensure the kitchen is properly prepared and staffed for service
Maintain consistent standards for food quality, preparation, portioning, and presentation
Train, coach, and provide direction to cooks and other kitchen team members
Monitor prep levels, product availability, and kitchen organization
Assist with scheduling and daily staffing needs
Support inventory, ordering, receiving, and product rotation
Help control food costs, waste, and labor
Maintain food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety standards
Assist with banquet and special-event food preparation and service
Work closely with culinary leadership to improve kitchen operations
Step in wherever needed to keep service moving and support the team

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a culinary professional who can combine strong cooking skills with the ability to lead a team and manage the demands of a busy kitchen.

Qualified candidates should have:

Previous Sous Chef experience or experience in a similar culinary leadership role

At least 4 years of Lead Cook experience and the skills, motivation, and leadership ability to take the next step into a Sous Chef position

Successful candidates should also bring:

Strong culinary and food preparation skills
Experience working in a high-volume or fast-paced kitchen
Ability to organize and direct daily kitchen activities
Strong understanding of food safety and sanitation
Ability to train, coach, and provide clear direction to team members
Good communication and organizational skills
An understanding of food costs, inventory, portion control, and waste reduction
Dependability and the ability to make sound decisions during busy periods
A hands-on leadership style and willingness to work alongside the culinary team
Banquet or high-volume hospitality experience preferred

Most importantly, we're looking for a motivated self-starter who sees problems that need to be solved, takes initiative, and wants to continue developing as a culinary leader.

Pay

$55,824.00 – $71,071.20 per year, depending on experience

Compensation within the posted range will be determined based on qualifications, experience, and demonstrated ability.
