Full Job Description

Brookfield Schools, a progressive, private school providing Trauma Sensitive, Informed and Focused Educational and Therapeutic education for students with special, emotional and behavioral needs currently seeking a Full-Time Special Education Teacher for our Brookfield Academy School.

The qualified candidate must possess the following;

Teacher of the Handicapped Certification

This is a 10-month position with hours from 8:00AM to 3:00PM, Monday through Friday. Competitive salary and benefits package offered.

Position: Teacher of Students with Disabilities- Academy; Monday-Friday 8:00am-3:00pm

Qualifications: B.A. or B.S. from an accredited college or university. The following is required: 1) Standard Teacher of the Handicapped Certification

Relationship: Reports directly to and is supervised by the Principal. Works with the clinical staff, under the oversight of the Clinical Director. Directly oversees the assignments and specific responsibilities of his/her classroom aide or assistant or any other aide/assistant assigned to activities in which the teacher is involved.

Responsibilities: The Teacher has the primary professional responsibility for maintaining the standards of competent teaching performance and the professional ethical standards for educators. The Teacher is responsible for providing the instructional program for each student the teacher supervises in the homeroom and/or in the academic area(s) covered by that teacher. This involves awareness of individual instructional levels, needs and learning styles, behavioral and academic objectives, as well as adaptation of curricula and methods to best meet within the context of a class grouping. The Teacher must also work closely with the Clinical Staff to promote each student’s social growth and increased behavioral controls and must also ensure each student’s safety and dignity through appropriate discipline procedures.

Teaching Duties:

1. Academic Instruction

A. Assesses the background and current standings of individual students in the teacher’scharge: reviews records, with special emphasis on the Learning Consultant’s report; observes and tests students; interprets test results; consults with Child Study Teams and/or other specialists, and/or with other school staff, as appropriate, to get all relevant information.

B. Determines the appropriate courses and materials most suited for a student to obtain academic success. Uses knowledge of current grade placement, district requirements,available courses, instructional levels, and individual motivation etc., in planning.

C. Designs and implements instructional programming for each student in the teacher’s charge. Having determined a course of study for a student, directly instructs that student to meet the objectives and goals of the Instructional Guide and the specific course work; or, when warranted, coordinates that the instruction is given elsewhere within the Brookfield Schools setting or through the district.

D. Evaluates the academic performance of each assigned student. Uses testing, observation etc. to monitor progress and give each student regular on-going feedback.

E. Considers revision and amendment of the academic goals and objectives or change of materials and/or methods used to instruct, based on such on-going evaluations. Documents any such modifications of program on the Instructional Guide Form.

F. Communicates information about student academic performance to all other personnel concerned as well as with the student’s family, the Child Study Team, etc. in a timely and professional manner. This includes, but is not limited to oral reports, sharing in staffing conferences or meetings, completing communication forms, written quarterly report cards, semi-annual discipline reports, incident reports, letters, parent, or parent/district conferences or through any other means as required by other Principal.

2. Social/Behavioral Programming

A. Identifies the social/behavioral issues of individual students in the teacher’s charge, in concert with clinicians and the Clinical Director. Reviews appropriate records, observes students, consults with Child Study Teams and/or other specialists, as well as other Brookfield Schools staff as appropriate to obtain all relevant information.

B. Works with the therapist involved and uses the case management model to determine the areas of needed social growth or the areas of need for increased behavioral controls.

C. Uses that determination to set social/behavioral goals and objectives for within the classroom and larger school setting and to guide educational programming to foster growth in the defined problematic areas.

D. Evaluates the student’s progress toward meeting social/behavioral goals and objectives. Uses the rating system data, discipline information, case management meeting input, data from conferences and meetings with outside authorities and feedback from family and staff to amend or revise goals and objectives as appropriate. Considers revision and amendment of the social/behavioral goals and objectives or a change in programming, in materials and/or methods used, or rewards offered, if appropriate, based on such on-going evaluations. Documents any such modifications on the Instructional Guide forms.

E. Communicates relevant information about these issues with all concerned persons by using various means to give feedback directly to students and to inform all concerned staff, family members, Child Study Team members, etc. of the identified areas of concern, the goals and objective set and the progress made toward meeting them.

3. Resource Management

A. Determines material and equipment needed to set up a classroom (e.g., curricular materials and equipment, such as textbooks, workbooks, and maps, globes etc. needed to instruct).

B. Within budget constraints, prioritizes and selects materials for the Principal’s approval. Submit orders for same.

General Duties:

1. Designs and implements classroom rules and regulations for optimum learning conditions and the safety of students and ensures they are clearly communicated to both students and other staff.

2. Set ups grading procedures and clear expectations of academic and attendance requirements and ensures they are clearly communicated to students and to other staff.

3. Maintains records of attendance and performance for academic and ratings reports and disseminates such reports when required in a prompt manner.

4. Helps review, evaluate and revise curricula, and/or procedures, on an ongoing (at least annually) basis. Determines the appropriateness of the Study Guides for coursed to be taught. Make revisions as needed. Submits changes to the Principal. Be sure there is an up-to-date set of course goals and objectives for anything presented by a given teacher.

5. Turns in lesson plans, and any other requested records of instructional design or method, to the Principal, as directed and on time. This includes, but is not limited to grades, comments, remarks, other materials for the Report Cards or Educational Progress Reports and report materials for Instruction Guide or IEP Review meetings.

6. Documents all phone calls and meetings and see that copies are appropriately distributed or filed.

7. Provides supervision of all students assigned to homeroom class, when scheduled as Teacher on Duty or as needed in emergencies.

8. Takes an instructional role in providing Core Curriculum courses throughout the school year.

9. Provides direction and oversight to the aide(s) or assistant(s) who work in the classroom, clearly defining their role and duties. Provides formal feedback, at least weekly, in a meeting which is to be documented by a summary that is signed by both parties and submitted to the Principal on a regular basis.

10. Meets the Principal on an ongoing basis.

11. Consults with the Clinical Director about students’ emotional and therapeutic issues in the teacher’s charge, on a regular on-going basis; both in case management meetings and as otherwise determined by the Principal.

12. Attends all other staff and committee meetings, in-services, and special events, etc. as assigned.

13. Performs such other duties as may be designated by the Executive Director/Superintendent.
