Full Job Description

Job Summary

Works as part of the Office of Academics to provide district level leadership, accountability and guidance for the provision of quality special education service and supports to students with disabilities. Responsible for direction, implementation and supervision of special education programs across multiple school sites within a culturally diverse urban district. Responsible for helping mediate and resolve special education conflicts within schools in their assigned community. Collaboration with fellow managers is fundamental. ;

;

Success in this position requires an extensive knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding high needs students and students with disabilities, as outlined in the individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Pay Range: $ 114,000-124,000

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

Position requires a Master¿s degree in education
Certification as an Exceptional Educational Administrator (#81) or Director of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services (#80)
Must maintain educational requirements for license renewal

Experience Requirements: ;

;At least three years of previous administrative experience in a school district is required.
;A minimum of five years of successful teaching experience as a fully-licensed and tenured special education teacher.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Position requires strong oral and written communication skills and good presentation and interpersonal skills
Mediation, collaboration and leadership skills are critical. Must be able to analyze and solve problems.
Computer proficiency is required, including the ability to manipulate data and interpret reports. Experience in word processing and spreadsheet applications is required. ; ; ;
A demonstrated expertise in the compliance to and legal mandates of IDEA and other federal, state and local laws and district policies are required.
The ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines is required. Initiative and the ability to be proactive in an ever-changing environment is necessary.

Responsibilities

Assists the special education supervisors in your assigned community with IEP compliance and other special education issues
Supports the Director of Special Education in the implementation of high-quality instruction for students with disabilities, and with IEP compliance and other special education issues
Provides direction to Academic Superintendents, Operational Managers, and Principals on district policy, procedures and concerns related to discipline, suspensions and expulsions as they relate to students with disabilities under IDEA
Provides technical assistance to Student Services staff in resolving disputes surrounding special education issues
Represents the Office of Academics and the Department of Specialized Services on various district committees as appropriate
Collaborates with the Director of Special Education on the professional development of special education supervisors and teachers
Actively works with other district leaders in support of the MPS Strategic Plan
Performs other duties as assigned
