Full Job Description

Job Title: Assistant Project Manager – Heavy Civil Construction

Location: Columbus, Ohio

Position Overview

A well-established, privately held general contractor with a strong presence in Central Ohio is seeking an Assistant Project Manager to support the execution of complex heavy civil infrastructure projects. This organization has a long-standing reputation for delivering high-quality work across site development, earthwork, underground utilities, roadway construction, and public infrastructure improvements.

The Assistant Project Manager will play a key role in supporting project leadership throughout all phases of construction—from preconstruction through closeout—while ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

Assist Project Managers with the planning, coordination, and execution of heavy civil construction projects
Support project startup activities including permitting, subcontractor onboarding, and schedule development
Track project costs, quantities, and productivity to help ensure financial performance goals are met
Assist in managing subcontractors and vendors, including procurement, contracts, and change orders
Coordinate with field teams, superintendents, and engineers to ensure work is executed per plans and specifications
Review drawings, specifications, and submittals for accuracy and constructability
Support the preparation of RFIs, submittals, and project documentation
Participate in project meetings and maintain clear communication with internal and external stakeholders
Monitor project schedules and help identify and mitigate potential delays
Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and quality expectations

Project Types

Qualifications

2–5+ years of experience in construction project management, preferably in heavy civil or site development
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred
Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods, sequencing, and logistics
Experience working with public infrastructure or DOT-related projects is a plus
Proficiency in construction management software (Procore, Viewpoint, or similar)
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
