<Job Summary>
The SOAR Initiative is seeking a compassionate, dependable Part-Time Outreach Worker to support harm reduction and overdose prevention efforts throughout Franklin County and surrounding communities as needed. This grant-funded position is ideal for someone passionate about public health, recovery, and serving people who use drugs through evidence-based, nonjudgmental outreach.

The Outreach Worker will build relationships with community members, distribute life-saving harm reduction supplies, educate participants about overdose prevention, represent SOAR at community events, and strengthen partnerships with local organizations and public health agencies.

This position averages up to 24 hours per week. Applicants must have at least 10 hours of weekday daytime availability (Monday–Friday between approximately 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.) to support outreach, partner meetings, and community events. Remaining hours may include evenings or weekends as outreach needs arise.

Responsibilities

Conduct street outreach throughout Franklin County, including encampments and other locations where people who use drugs gather.
Build trusting, nonjudgmental relationships with people who use drugs and connect them with available resources.
Distribute naloxone, fentanyl test strips, xylazine test strips, educational materials, and other harm reduction supplies.
Educate participants about The SOAR Initiative's Bad Batch Alert system and assist with enrollment.
Attend community events, recovery events, overdose awareness activities, health fairs, and resource fairs.
Coordinate and participate in pop-up outreach events as community needs arise.
Develop and maintain relationships with syringe service programs, treatment providers, health departments, recovery organizations, shelters, and other community partners.
Represent The SOAR Initiative professionally in the community.
Attend monthly virtual staff meetings and participate in bi-weekly supervision meetings with the Director of Programs.
Maintain accurate outreach documentation and submit required reports in a timely manner.
Travel throughout Franklin County and occasionally nearby counties when requested.

Qualifications

Passion for harm reduction, public health, or serving underserved communities.
Experience in outreach, peer support, recovery services, public health, social services, or related fields preferred.
Lived experience with substance use or recovery is valued but not required.
Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
Ability to work independently and manage a flexible schedule.
Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of environments.
Valid driver's license.
Reliable personal vehicle with current insurance.
Ability to lift and transport outreach supplies (up to 30 pounds).

Schedule

Up to 24 hours per week
Must have at least 10 hours of weekday daytime availability (Monday–Friday) for outreach, meetings, and partner engagement.
Some evening and weekend hours are required for community events, outreach activities, and overdose response initiatives.

Compensation

$19.00 per hour
Grant-funded position

Work Location

Hybrid Remote – Based in Franklin County (Columbus), Ohio

Travel throughout Franklin County is required.
