Position Summary:
The Systems Integrator is responsible for the design, programming, configuration, startup, and support of control systems used in water and wastewater treatment facilities. This role develops and maintains PLC, HMI, OIT, and SCADA applications that monitor and control treatment processes, pumping systems, lift stations, and skid-mounted treatment equipment.The Systems Integrator programs industrial controllers, touch screens, operator interfaces, and SCADA systems to ensure reliable and efficient operation of water and wastewater infrastructure. This position works closely with engineering, manufacturing, field service technicians, and customers to provide system integration, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical support throughout the project lifecycle.The position requires periodic travel to customer sites to perform startup, commissioning, calibration, troubleshooting, and operator support activities using company vehicles.
Key Duties and essential functions:
PLC & Control System Programming
- Design, develop, and maintain PLC programs for water and wastewater treatment systems.
- Program industrial controllers, remote terminal units (RTUs), and embedded control devices.
- Develop process control logic for pumps, valves, blowers, chemical feed systems, filtration systems, and treatment equipment.
- Perform system testing, debugging, and validation of control programs.
- Develop and maintain programming standards and documentation.
HMI, OIT & SCADA Development
- Design and configure operator interface terminals (OITs), touch screens, and Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications.
- Develop SCADA software applications used to monitor and control treatment processes.
- Create intuitive graphical interfaces, process animations, alarms, trends, and system dashboards.
- Configure alarm management and notification systems.
- Develop historical data collection and trending applications.
- Design and maintain reporting packages for operational and compliance reporting.
Systems Integration & Communications
- Configure and integrate PLCs, HMIs, SCADA servers, instrumentation, and network devices.
- Implement communication systems utilizing:
- Ethernet/IP
- Modbus TCP/IP
- Modbus RTU
- Serial Communications
- Fiber Optic Networks
- Radio Telemetry Systems
- Cellular Communication Systems
- Configure industrial networking equipment and troubleshoot communication issues.
- Support remote monitoring and remote access solutions.
Startup, Commissioning & Field Support
- Perform field startup and commissioning of water and wastewater control systems.
- Verify proper installation, calibration, and operation of instrumentation and control equipment.
- Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, SCADA, networking, and instrumentation issues at customer sites.
- Support field service technicians during startup and commissioning activities.
- Provide operator training and technical support to customers.
- Document startup activities, system modifications, and troubleshooting resolutions.
Database & Reporting Development
- Design and maintain SQL databases supporting SCADA and operational reporting systems.
- Develop historical data storage solutions and trend analysis tools.
- Create custom reports and data visualization applications.
- Support data collection and reporting requirements for regulatory compliance and operational analysis.
Project Support
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and project management teams throughout project execution.
- Review electrical and control drawings for accuracy and functionality.
- Assist with control panel development and system testing.
- Support factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT).
- Maintain project documentation, backups, and version control.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, or related field; equivalent industry experience may be considered.
- Experience with PLC programming and industrial automation systems.
- Experience developing HMI, OIT, or SCADA applications.
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server or similar database platforms.
- Understanding of industrial networking and communications protocols.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and electrical control drawings.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
- Strong commitment to customer service and project success.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within assigned territory.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the water and wastewater treatment industry.
- Experience with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, or other industrial control platforms.
- Experience with Ignition, VTScada, Wonderware, FactoryTalk, or similar SCADA software.
- Knowledge of instrumentation including flow meters, level transmitters, pressure transmitters, analyzers, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
- Experience with industrial cybersecurity best practices.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to travel to customer and project sites as required.
- Ability to work in treatment plants, pump stations, industrial facilities, and construction environments.
- Ability to climb ladders, walk uneven terrain, and work around mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
