Position Summary
The Staff Accountant reports to the Accounting Manager and supports the Accounting Department by performing account reconciliations, processing corporate payments through various payment channels, and handling general accounting functions for the credit union. The role also works closely with the VP of Finance on investment transaction processing and related recordkeeping, coordinated through the Accounting Manager. This role is being created as part of a broader reorganization in which payment and card responsibilities are being transitioned out of the Accounting Department to the Back Office Operations team, allowing the accounting function to focus on core financial accuracy, reconciliation, investment support, and reporting. Two Staff Accountant positions are being added to build capacity and redundancy within the department, ensure timely month-end close, and support the credit union’s investment and liquidity management activities.
Key Responsibilities
· Perform timely, accurate reconciliations of general ledger accounts, including correspondent bank accounts, investment accounts, suspense/clearing accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
· Research and resolve reconciling items and discrepancies in a timely manner; escalate unresolved items to the Accounting Manager.
· Maintain organized, audit-ready reconciliation documentation in accordance with credit union policy and retention requirements.
· Assist with reconciliation of subsidiary ledgers, both internal and external, to the general ledger.
· Process corporate payments for expenses, loan fundings, dealer incentives, and similar transactions via ACH and CU Corporate RTP to ensure timely payment.
· Process outgoing and incoming wire transfers related to investment purchases, sales, maturities, and settlements, as directed by the Accounting Manager in coordination with the VP of Finance and in accordance with dual-control procedures.
· Coordinate with the Accounting Manager for daily monitoring of liquidity.
· Prepare and post journal entries in accordance with GAAP and credit union accounting policies.
· Assist with month-end and year-end close processes to support timely, accurate financial reporting.
· Assist with preparation of supporting schedules for monthly financial statements, the annual budget, Board reporting packages, ALM, and the Call Report.
· Process corporate payment transactions and assist with vendor account reconciliation, as assigned.
· Maintain fixed asset records, including additions, disposals, and depreciation schedules.
· Assist with gathering documentation and schedules requested by internal auditors, external auditors, and NCUA/state examiners.
· Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and controls; bring recommendations to the Accounting Manager.
· Other duties as assigned.
Compliance and Regulatory Awareness
- Understand and adhere to credit union regulatory, accounting, and internal control requirements.
- Participate in periodic compliance, security, and job-related training as required by the credit union.
· Adhere to organizational policies and procedures and comply with the requirements of the Bank Secrecy Act.
· Maintain audit-ready documentation for reconciliations, accounting records, investment activity, and supporting schedules.
· Support readiness for internal audits, external audits, regulatory examinations, and operational reviews.
· Identify, escalate, and help resolve accounting discrepancies, control concerns, and operational risk items.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- 1–3 years of accounting experience required; credit union, bank, or other financial institution experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with account reconciliations and general ledger accounting required; payment processing experience a plus.
- Solid understanding of GAAP and general accounting principles.
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly when handling corporate payments and reconciling financial accounts.
- Strong proficiency with spreadsheet applications, including Excel, and comfort learning core accounting and investment tracking systems.
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple recurring deadlines, including daily reconciliations, wire cutoffs, monthly close, and quarterly reporting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working closely with the Accounting Manager and the VP of Finance, as well as auditors and examiners.
- High degree of integrity and discretion in handling confidential financial data.
Work Environment & Requirements
- Full-time position with standard Monday–Friday business hours; additional hours may occasionally be required during month-end, quarter-end, year-end, audit, and examination periods.
- Standard office environment; ability to sit for extended periods and use standard office and computer equipment.
- Require pushing, pulling, standing and the ability to lift 60 pounds
- Minimal travel required.
