Full Job Description

Humane Indiana is currently hiring for two Veterinary Technician/Assistant positions:

2 Shelter Medicine Technician/Assistant

These positions support both the Humane Indiana Shelter and occasionally, the Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic. We are seeking compassionate, hardworking, and team-oriented individuals dedicated to animal welfare and quality veterinary care.

The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, communicates effectively with staff and clients, and is passionate about improving the lives of animals.

Position Summary

The Veterinary Technician/Assistant is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, comfort, and wellbeing of shelter and clinic animals before, during, and after medical treatment or surgical procedures. This role works closely with veterinarians, medical staff, volunteers, adoption staff, and clients to provide excellent patient care and maintain efficient daily operations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Duties may include but are not limited to:

General Veterinary & Shelter Care

Assist veterinarians with physical examinations, treatments, and daily medical needs
Perform intake and discharge examinations for shelter animals
Administer vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, medications, and preventative care
Prepare, calculate, and properly administer medications via oral, subcutaneous, intravenous, and other routes
Monitor patients before, during, and after anesthesia or surgery and alert veterinarians to concerns
Maintain accurate medical records and treatment documentation
Pull laboratory samples and perform in-house testing as needed
Accurately identify parasites under a microscope from fecal samples
Collaborate with kennel staff, foster coordinator, adoption counselors, and medical teams to ensure continuity of care

Team & Operational Support

Maintain disease prevention, cleaning, and safety protocols
Ensure treatment tasks and daily responsibilities are completed on time
Work respectfully and professionally with staff, volunteers, clients, and community service workers
Support adoption events, shelter events, and community outreach programs
Assist with additional duties as assigned

Qualifications Required

High School Diploma or GED
Professional experience in veterinary medicine as a Veterinary Assistant or Technician
Understanding of veterinary medical terminology and procedures
Strong communication and organizational skills
Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
Ability to remain calm, professional, and compassionate under pressure

Preferred

Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification in Indiana
Associate Degree or coursework in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health, Biology, or related field
Minimum 1–2 years of veterinary or shelter medicine experience
Experience in high-volume spay/neuter or shelter medicine preferred
Animal handling experience

Physical & Emotional Requirements

Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and/or sit for extended periods
Comfortable working in loud, fast-paced environments
Ability to emotionally handle injured, ill, or euthanasia cases professionally and compassionately
Strong problem-solving and teamwork abilities

Work Environment

Employees are regularly exposed to animal fur, dander, cleaning products, and medical environments. The work can be physically and emotionally demanding but highly rewarding for individuals committed to animal welfare and veterinary care.

Schedule & Compensation

Full-time hourly positions
Weekend and holiday availability may be required
Compensation based on experience and qualifications
