The Human Resources Payroll Technician role support the Department of Public Safety with a wide range of payroll duties to include analyze, calculate, audit and certify timesheets and process personnel actions on time and without error. This includes assuring all payroll and leave transactions are in accordance with applicable Personnel Rules, Bargaining Unit provisions, State Statutes, and Standard Operating Procedures for the State of Alaska.

We’re hiring for this position in the DPS HQ building in Anchorage, at 5700 East Tudor Road! The DPS HR-Payroll Section is a friendly, welcoming environment that’s team oriented, and productive.
Payroll requires attention to detail and a key part of the workday involves data entry, verifying information, and reconciling figures. The work environment is digitally focused and includes reoccurring tasks leading up to paydays every two weeks.

Six months of entry technical level experience in human resource work equivalent to a Human Resource Technician 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent and one year of advanced clerical experience.
Substitution:
One year of postsecondary education (32 semester hours or 48 quarter hours from an accredited college or university equals one year) in any field.
Special Note:
High school graduation "equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a G.E.D (i.e. passing the General Educational Development test).; 2) completion of any basic adult education course of 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 hours per week); 3) six months of work experience performing duties related to office or clerical support; 4) twelve months of work experience involving some routine tasks related to office or clerical support; 5) highest grade of school completed plus any kind of work experience that totals 12 years or more; or 6) acceptance for admission in full standing by an accredited college or university.
"Human resource" work includes experience in recruitment and selection, classification, employee training, employer provided benefits programs, employment law compliance, personnel, payroll, or employee or labor relations.

SPECIAL NOTE:
The State of Alaska is realigning payroll services by decentralizing payroll functions for seven (7) departments, including the Department of Public Safety. The incumbent of this position will be initially appointed in the Department of Administration, Division of Finance and may initially be physically located within the Department of Administration. The position will transfer effective July 1, 2026.
BACKGROUND CHECK:
This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.
