Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Evening Kitchen Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, appealing meals and snacks for residents while maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming kitchen environment. This position plays an important role in creating a comfortable, home-like dining experience for the individuals we serve.

The Evening Kitchen Cook is expected to follow established menus, recipes, dietary requirements, food safety standards, and facility policies while treating residents and coworkers with dignity, patience, and respect.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare and serve evening meals and snacks according to the established menu and scheduled meal times.
Follow resident-specific diets, food allergies, food restrictions, and special dietary instructions.
Prepare food in appropriate portions and ensure meals are served at proper temperatures.
Maintain safe food-handling practices at all times.
Properly store, label, date, and rotate food items.
Monitor refrigerator, freezer, and food temperatures as required.
Complete required kitchen and food temperature documentation accurately.
Keep kitchen, dining areas, equipment, dishes, utensils, and work surfaces clean and sanitary.
Wash dishes and kitchen equipment as needed throughout the shift.
Properly dispose of garbage and maintain clean trash areas.
Check food supplies and notify the appropriate supervisor of items that need to be ordered or replaced.
Minimize food waste and use supplies appropriately.
Assist with meal preparation for the following shift when requested.
Ensure leftover food is properly stored, labeled, dated, and refrigerated.
Follow all applicable health department, licensing, and facility food-safety requirements.
Report damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, food concerns, or maintenance needs to the supervisor.
Assist residents and staff in maintaining a pleasant and respectful dining environment.
Maintain confidentiality regarding residents and their personal information.
Follow all facility policies and procedures.
Perform other kitchen and dietary duties as assigned.

Resident Care and Customer Service

Although this is primarily a kitchen position, the Evening Kitchen Cook is an important part of the residents' daily experience. The employee is expected to:

Treat every resident with dignity, kindness, patience, and respect.
Be responsive to reasonable resident requests related to meals and dining.
Encourage a pleasant, family-like dining atmosphere.
Communicate concerns regarding a resident's eating habits, dietary needs, or food preferences to the appropriate staff member.
Respect each resident's individual preferences and level of independence.

Food Safety and Sanitation

The Evening Kitchen Cook must consistently follow proper food safety practices, including:

Proper handwashing and personal hygiene.
Prevention of cross-contamination.
Proper cooking, cooling, reheating, holding, and storage of food.
Proper labeling and dating of food.
Maintaining required food temperatures.
Proper cleaning and sanitizing of food-contact surfaces and equipment.
Following all facility and regulatory requirements related to food preparation and sanitation.

Qualifications

Previous cooking or food-service experience preferred.
Experience working in assisted living, residential care, healthcare, or similar settings is preferred but not required.
Ability to follow written menus, recipes, dietary instructions, and food-safety procedures.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Ability to communicate professionally with residents, families, coworkers, and supervisors.
Must be dependable, responsible, and able to maintain a clean and organized work area.
Must be able to safely perform the physical duties associated with food preparation and kitchen cleaning.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

Stand and walk for extended periods.
Frequently bend, reach, stoop, and lift.
Safely lift and carry food supplies, kitchen equipment, and other items within reasonable limits.
Safely operate kitchen appliances and equipment.
Perform repetitive tasks such as chopping, stirring, washing dishes, and cleaning.

Work Expectations

The Evening Kitchen Cook is expected to arrive on time, be prepared to begin work at the scheduled start time, maintain a professional appearance, and work cooperatively with other staff members.

Because this position works in a residential care setting, employees are expected to contribute to a safe, respectful, clean, and family-inspired environment for both residents and coworkers.

Pay: $15.50 - $16.50 per hour
